unique situation

im in a very unique situation, im overweight, and i kno that i need to lose weight...but im not motivated to diet because i dont feel that my weight is holidng me back in any way. Im not miserable because of the way i look, but i know that i could look a lot better just by losing weight...im 14 and 170 btw...im trying to think of a way i could motivate myself to lose weight, maybe if anyone out there who was only a little overweight but still lost weight can tell me how much of a difference it can make?

hi. the best motivation is to think about how to make your health better. i used to have self esteem problems and they motivated me, but in your case you have to realize that your weight isnt healthy and could cause you health problems in the future. i definetly had to learn that the hard way, but look at it this way. i used to have athsma and i started doing cardio and dieting and the athsma well let's just say, what athsma? becuase now it's gone.
good luck

trust me man you want to lose that weight, since i lost my little weight i have been better. i can flex more, breath better, feel better, Plus at your age losing some weight might motivate you to play football or something. Chick dig scars!!

But you have to do it because you want to cause if you don't you won't do it.

At 14 its easy to think that you are invincible. But you are heading down a road that will definitely lead to a life of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes..........as well as a lifetime of medication and general ill health.

Take a look at some of your overweight family members and see where their health is and that may give you some motivation.

This is a tricky one - after all, the only person who can motivate you is you and, if you cannot see any reason to lose weight...why lose weight, right?

I know a lot of people who are overweight who are extremely happy with who they are and how they look. If your weight isn't causing you any social problems or health problems, I'm wondering why you are here looking for motivation in the first place?

Me, I'm driven my vanity (because I'm very shallow ;)) and, the health benefits are a fortunate side-effect. At 14, your body is still deciding what to do with itself and, by adulthood, who knows where it will be - if you're motivated to give it a helping hand along the way, it can only be a good thing.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

You don't want to lose weight....you just want to get more fit!
Fitness is great for so much stuff. Not only will you look better, but your health will improve, it's a very good hobby that makes you wiser, you'll meet people to share your new hobby with because gym's are great social places, people will look up to you for doing fitness regularly and each time after a good workout you will feel a high that is better than booze or weed or whatever can give you and it's legal!

You've got a lot of reasons why you want to workout but you don't know it fully until you try it for a while.

Oh and yes, the poonany is true too plus you'll get a better drive for it. :)

I've been in your situation. The difference is subtle but pervasive. What do I mean by that? It affects who you are for the better, but it won't change everything in your life. Unrealistic expectation is the assassin of dreams. Also, having the boys/ladies drool over you is pretty good for the ego. :D

You've probably heard all of the standard arguments, but I think I've got a pretty good one, and it's pretty short, one word actually: respect.

In two parts (in order of least priority to greatest):

What other people think.
People can say what they want, but the fact that remains is being overweight is bad for your health. Being overweight sends a message to the world that you, the person who knows you best and therefore would know, don't think you're worth caring about. This is why society always has, and always will have a negative attitude towards those who are overweight.

What you think:
You can say that being overweight isn't really a problem for you, but deep down you know the truth. The fact is your body is your physical representation of who you are. Those who respect themselves make the effort to do the best they can with what they have.

You're the only real judge of what you're worth, but I prefer to think you're valuable. :)

You're here, so you're at least thinking about it and that's a start.

There are a lot of things you can do in small ways that will pay big dividends. Fitness isn't all about serious workouts - walking the dog, playing frisbee with friends, hitting the ball around the tennis court - there are lots of activities you can do to get moving!

Address diet issues the same way - minor adjustments over time. Like, I don't allow myself more than one burger a week. Having never been much of a breakfast eater, that's another goal - trying to eat something every day before I leave the house (or before I've been awake for an hour).

And water - drink lots of water. It seems like such a small thing, but when I'm drinking water I'm not drinking Coke or coffee!

You're young and there are lots of things in store for you, so try to start laying a healthy foundation and don't beat yourself up if you slip on occasion. Deprivation is a hard road, but moderation is doable for most humans.

Make it fun, and it won't be hard to keep up with.

Simply put, getting fit will make you better at everything you do. Do you shoot hoops, ski, snowboard, skateboard, golf, waterski, jet-ski(standups), ride MX, play frisbee, surf, swim, play baseball, football, dance, hike, mountain climb, mountain bike or do anything that requires movement? If so, a little extra muscle and a little less fat will make you better at it and give you more stamina. And, as was mentioned previously, chicks would much rather be seen with a guy that belongs on the cover of Mens Fitness than on the cover of Electronic Gaming Magazine. ;)

if you don't feel a pressing desire to lose weight, then just make little changes. Go for bike rides, rollerbaldes, walks, runs. . . normal things for a young person to do (in theory :p ) Try to eat less junk food, eat more healthy food. When I was in a similar situation I did those things and since I wasn't dieting drastically or losing weight noticeably, it felt like I wasn't at all. But I joined a dance team and played sports with my friends a few times a week just for fun, and I tried to eat healthier even though a lot of the time I 'failed' and ate junk. Then a few months later, I looked back at pictures and was amazed at how much smaller I was. Just with that effort I got noticeable results.

try joining a sport. at 14 your young enough to be able to get into it and really succeed, it could take you places. it will help keep you working out regularly and help with setting goals.

also, one reason to lose weight is that many people in your situation will gain weight if they don't lose weight. Slowly over time pounds will pile up and soon you may find yourself in a position were its extremely difficult for you to change your ways.

if you don't want to lose weight- you won't. believe you can ask anyone on every weight loss forum in existence and nobody can truly make you motivated but yourself.
