Understanding Why Nurses Wear Scrubs Outside Work

I see it as a serious contamination threat.
Rn, I’m on a family vacation in the US, for the first time, and I’m genuinely shocked by how common it is to see people wearing their nursing scrubs outside, like in the metros, grocery stores, even at cafes.
I’m from Denmark & scrubs for nurses are treated almost like a uniform that belongs strictly inside the hospital. You change in, you change out. Wearing a nurses scrub uniform out in public just feels odd to me, especially considering infection control and how much exposure scrubs get during a shift.
Is this normal in some places? Do hospitals in the US allow it? Or is it just convenience?
