unbelievably frustrating belly fat

Ok. Two years ago, I weighed 240 pounds. I was 16 at the time. I used atkins at one point and a low fat diet at another. After about a year later I weighed 175. I still had a little bit of fat on my stomach, enough that I couldn't see my lower abs.

Another year of fairly intense training (4-5 miles a day + weights) yielded about 8 pounds of muscle, but no change in waist size. The belly fat remains.

During this past year, my nutrition has been outstanding i think. I eat pretty much no processed foods, low fat and a balance between protein and carbs.

I've tried altering my nutrition to eliminate that belly fat, everything between low calorie (~1500 cals) and high (~2500-3000).

Still, this stupid belly fat remains. I look like I have a decent gut if I let it relax and let it expand. Yet, when I flex my abs, I can see my 4 upper abs.

What am I doing wrong?

it sounds like you've done quite a bit already, good job on losing the weight, i don't know how intense your cardio is, but that could be a pretty big factor, and of course the nutrition

there are quite a bit of people that have lost a good amount of weight but end up with excess fat on their stomach and abs, sometimes it's fixed with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), i don't know how severe it is, but that's just a thought

do you do any abdominal exercises? you have water retention? of course that is a factor. bodybuilders have to cut there water back before their show inorder to show there vascularity and lower abs. you have to factor in genetics as well. is anyone else in your family overweight? you've lost a good amound of weight, congrats! but if your genetics are programed to hold weight in certain ways in certain areas sometimes its almost impossible to get that "perfect" body. do you eat a lot of saltly foods? there are many factors in why you might not be seeing your lower abs, doing cardio like a mad man isnt going to make them pop out. consider water retention, salt intake, abdominal exercises daily & genetics ;) try to tune up what you can in those areas and see if you have a different result.

The first place that fat accumulates is in the belly. You're still overweight if you have a beer gut. The best way I have found to get rid of a beer gut is to stick to high quality foods, so that your appetite regulation system doesn't demand as much food. The low quality foods are pizza, hamburgers, and commercial bread. Also avoid anything with MSG (monosodium glutamate) in it; it makes for obese rats in laboratory tests as well. You'd be surprised at how many foods contain MSG junk. Also, avoid soy in all its forms, and all hydrogenated oils. For cooking, use butter. Make your own bread using coconut oil. When I got off all commercial breadstuffs, I went from 190 to 175 and lost my big belly.

You need to be eatting more according to your resting metabolic rate rather than just guessing... and you need to be doing it consistantly... 1 pound of fat is about 3,500 calories, so find your RMR, subtract 500, and that will help start losing the weight... on top of eating 4-5 meals a day...
