Trying to Lose Weight? Study Says Avoid Potatoes

I'm sure there's good scientific reasoning behind this, and the diets tracked are probably very different to mine, but this strikes me as incredibly counterintuitive. Personally, I find potatoes a good way to keep my calories down (as a lowish calorie starch that keeps me fuller for longer), I avoid nuts as I don't find them at all satiating (and they're incredibly high calorie density), and cheese always spikes my calorie intake (even if I'm using it to replace something else, I end up eating more on days I have cheese). (Side note- I just read the transcript, rather than the study)

Interesting, in any case.

It's not really potatoes..it is how we tend to eat them.

Hell, my reading of this study is what we been saying. Moderation is key of everything. How you prepare things means everything.

In other words, calories in vs calories out..with common sense.

Everyone has a study that states this food is bad for you or it cause severe wait gain. Why is it people ate these foods long ago and they were not overweight or obese? Makes you wonder.

I have to agree with Jericho that it has to do with moderation... In the past, people had to be more careful because food was not always available in such abundance as it is now...

Drop the white starchy potatoes. Stick to the low GI yams/sweet potatoes. Even days out from the competition day, bodybuilders will use sweet potatoes in their nutritional regime. Safe choice in my opinion.

Hiii,

I also agree that by keeping potatoes away from your diet i will help us alot to reduce calories.because potatoes have lots of calories in it so its easy way that we shouldnt use it and avoid it in our diet.anyways thanks for providing i love reading more such kind of information because its helping us lot

I'm no expert, but the weight watchers diet I am following allows a free portion of potatoes for only 2 points. I use that option 3-4 times a week, and the diet seems to be working pretty good...

Hey cindero, is there a specific portion size that you have to stick with for the 2 points?

I love mashed potato with a little milk/marg/cheese. And I do mean a small amount of each. Trouble was, when I got to weighting portions I was actually eating a triple portion (I'm similar with rice too). I can say no to cake/ice cream easily but am still struggling with portion size.

Even if fries are my favorite secret craving even since my childhood, no need for a ''scientific study'' to know that potatoes are not good for a diet of someone trying to lose weight. They are probably the worst vegetable as they are 92% carb(sugar) with barely any other nutrients . And it's way more likely to go on and eat a big portion of potato than spinach or carrots for exemple, i dont think people go on spinach craving like they do for potatoes.

Hi all,
this is very ice to stay here,
i am very glad to see all the topics,
please keep sharing and posting here,
thanks !!!!!

i woudn't worry about the calories in nuts or the fat content unless your eating loads of them. In fact i woudl encourage any weight loss diet to include plenty of nuts.

I am doing a "lifestyle change" right now to lose weight and it is working very well for me. I needed to find something I could stick with, afford and that fit into my busy schedule.

I did cut out potatoes -- I cut out pretty much anything white. With that said -- I am a carb fanatic.... so I replaced it with Beans, pinto beans, black beans, lentils... it seems to keep my carb cravings down.

I also allow myself one free day a week. I ALWAYS enjoy a small baked potato with little butter and sour cream.

I think it is about finding what works for you and as it has been said... everything in moderation.

Now I read a study that indicated that potatoes are bad but when I actually read into the study they were not talking about the potatoes but what people put into the potatoes that was actually bad for you For people tend to put a lot of butter, sour cream and other things like that into a baked potato and they do it excessively. What was the name of the study you read?

You've hit the nail on the head with respect to why potatoes are considered "bad" sometimes. As for the article, it's linked in the first post :)

..the FATS in potatoes?

I'm sorry but you need to go back to school if you think there are fat in potatoes. If you cook then certain ways, yes because of the fats in butter and creams but potatoes are starches aka carbohydrates.

I would say stay away from potatoes at all costs if you can...They are easy to eat because they are so tasteful but do not help you at all in your quest to lose weight...

That's like saying 'Stay away from food'. Totally over-generalised and not helpful at all.

Hello,

i think we are missing the point here.

Potatoes are carbs and our body will turn them into fat when the sugar level is restored in our body. The problem however is this happens REALLY REALLY fast. Certainly for western people with low level activities during the day it is best for us to get our carbs out of vegetables and fruit.
