Trying to lose and tone...

Hey y'all,

Im brand new to this forum. I have some questions and I was hoping the people here could assist me.

My wife and I started working out Jan 1st of this year. We both had done some randon working out before hand, but Jan 1st was our set date to join the gym and really hit it hard.

We got measured and weighed on our first day for a point of reference. I decided to go the route of the treadmill with just a little resistance/weight training thrown in.

Now after 2 1/2 months I was remeasured and weighed. I have lost 25 lbs and about 2-3 inches on my chest, waist, hips, arms, neck, and thighs... BUT, I only lost about 3-4% body fat...

Question is, what am I doing wrong? I guess I was always under the impression that running was the best way to burn fat and lose weight.

I am about 6'4" and currently 245, I still have a bit of a tummy and love handles that I would like to get rid of. I am not looking to build muscle, mainly tone what muscle I have. A good comparison is that I want a basketball players build. Tight abs, chest, and arms, but not enormous.

What would be a good routine to get into to help me achieve my goal of fat loss as well as weight loss and toning what muscles I currently have. Please be specific regarding exercises, reps, and weight.

Thank you in advance for your help.

You probably lost some muscle as well as fat.

You may have kept more muscle if you'd been doing a full body workout (resistance training) three times a week, with big, heavy lifts. You could always start this now (keep the cardio work in there too) and continue to lose the weight, making most of it fat with the right diet.

So I am a creature of routine... If you had to set a routine for me, how many days a week should I workout and what exercises would maximize fat loss?

I am not to familiar with what exercises work what body parts, so examples would be very helpful.

Thank you!

Its unfortunate that it is a widely accepted belief that running is the best method to lose weight, because its really not. High intensity interval training, more spefically, high intensity interval weight training, is the most effective way to burn fat and build strength. For what you are looking for, and for what has worked the best for me, I would highly recommend kettlebell training. I have gotten down to 6% bodyfat while training with kettlebells, and I am also stronger than I have ever been. If you need any help getting started or advice, let me know, I'd be happy to help. GOod luck!
