Trying to get healthy for health's sake!

Hi Everyone,

Right now I weigh 251.4 pounds, 27 years old and I am 6 foot 0 inches tall, and I'd like to give you a little back story to my weight history over the last 12 years or so. Hopefully I can make a long story short. I first really gained "too" much weight in high school and probably weighed as much as 245 I eventually went up to 255 while going to college. After college I worked some physical labor jobs (some outdoors most indoors) which was great because I dropped down to 230, it was probably unhealthy because I was so busy I didn't have time to eat much. Once I got a job in my career path which has little physical labor I went back up to 250. I tried the low carb diet and got down to 220 but just dieting proved too hard and slowly I have put the weight back on since. I changed jobs 2 years ago and was at 230 when I started and as recently as two weeks ago I was at 262.

Pop has always been my weakness, every time I gained weight the main cause was pop (1000 calories worth a day). Late last year I was also in a bad habit of eating cereal before bed and drinking a lot of chocolate milk (gallon a week). Probably from October last year until April this year I put on 15 pounds until I was at 260 or so.

Two weeks ago I talked to my brother who is a mortician and I asked him if he was busy because usually around this time of year he isn't. He said he was which was unusual. I asked if it was a lot of old people, middle aged people or what. He answered that it was all ages, pretty even so I asked if he noticed any trends and he said yeah, most are overweight, 250 plus. This was just a normal conversation; he wasn't trying to tell me something. I quickly thought about it and said to myself, I'm not sure if I can determine for sure when I'm going to die but I can for certain determine how much I weigh when I die. Besides if I'm healthy then that should go a long way in helping me live longer and happier.

So two weeks ago I was 262 and I was hovering there for a good two months which probably means I was eating about 3300-3500 calories a day. I don't want do a diet, it's too hard and it never stay's off. My plan so far has been to cut out liquid calories and late night snacks. In addition to that I am exercising just about every day. Here is my routine for the last two weeks.

Wake up early in the morning and do about 20 minutes of cardio while drinking water. I also do about 15 minutes of walking while on my way to work. For breakfast I usually have two eggs, raw broccoli and some strawberries. Occasionally I have a piece of toast as well. The last two days though I had a bagel with a little butter and jelly.

Around 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM I have some cut up fruit.

For Lunch around 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM I have half a sandwich or half a chicken salad and a couple pieces of cut up fruit.

Around 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM I'll have the other half of my sandwich or salad.

At 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM I have a few more pieces of cut up fruit (I love this stuff instead of pop).

Every day around 5:00 PM 5:30 after having some pieces of fruit I exercise between 30 minutes and an hour. Saturday I do exercise bike, Sunday I rest, Monday/Wednesday/Friday I jog on a machine for 20 minutes then lift weights alternating quickly between different muscles and Tuesday/Thursday I jog for 20 minutes and walk for 20 minutes.

For dinner I eat the usual, pasta's, vegetables, chicken, generally healthy type foods, nothing too bad but I have been eating less then what I used to eat. I'll have about 50 to 75 Percent of what I used to eat.

The key for me has been no pop and no late night eating as far as diet goes.

In two weeks I've lost 10.5 pounds. In the last 4 days I've been stuck at 251 though and it's kind of disappointing.

From my diet I'd guess I'm having about 1600 to 2000 calories a day which means I should still be losing weight. I've hit the "wall" before but never this early or am I being paranoid and I should give it more time.

I should mention that 4 of the last 5 days I didn't do my 20 minute early morning cardio so maybe that is the cause, I wouldn't think it would be because I'm still exercising in the afternoon. Also cutting about between 2000 and 1500 calories from your old diet alone should get you a pound or two loss a week.

Perhaps the other possibility is that I'm gaining muscle weight from working out. Should I keep doing that since it's burning fat and not worry about the weight?

Ultimately I'd like to get down to 200 or 210 by the end of the year (50 pounds in 6 or 7 months). I'm also going to Key West in July so I also want to see how much I can lose before then, I was hoping for 30 lbs loss in 45 days but that might be unrealistic (I hope not).

Anyway if you have any tips or advice for how I can get down from 251 I would appreciate it very much. Also any take on my routine and how many calories it sounds like I'm eating would be great info too.

Thank you very much,

Jeremy

Sounds like you're off to a great start!!

I saw the stupid post on here earlier, don't worry that happens very rarely. We really do try to be honest, but supportive around here. check out the stickies there is a lot of useful information around these parts.

Keep us updated!!

Hey I figured I'd give an update.

I'm down to 241 lbs now, lost 10 since my last post which I'm averaging about 2 to 3 pounds weight loss a week. Not too bad. I could be losing more if I had the energy to do the 20 minues of cardio in the morning like I was the first 10 days I started losing weight.

I still work out (cardio and weights) 3 times a week and I do a lot of walking.

No soda-pop for almost 7 weeks now which is really good for me. I haven't missed it like I have previous times I tried to give it up. The reason I haven't missed it is because I've subed in fruit and the excercise which I didn't do in the past.

I was dissapointed that I didn't keep the 6 pounds a week pace that I started out with but it was more likely water weight that I lost. I'm happy right now with 2 - 3 pounds a week, which should get me down to 200 by November or so which would be awesome.

So far this seems to be a lifestyle change which was key to my success. In the past doing diets it never felt right, I always thought "Man, I can't wait until I'm done with this so I can stop eating stuff I don't really like and start eating what I do like". Right now I don't feel that way at all because I still eat whatever I want.

I guess I'm lucky since all I had to do was give up pop, which after not drinking it for a while it doesn't taste good anyway. For others though it might not be that easy, some good advice that I've come across is to try eating half portions of what you like to eat. It might be hard at first but after a week or two your body adjusts and half portions begin to make you feel full. That's the way it was when I gave up pop, my body was still used to the calorie intake so it took about a week to adjust, then I didn't miss it anymore.

Anyway I hope everyone is doing well, and hopefully everyone has the same success that I've had.

PS. The excercise has been great. Being in shape makes it all worth while because now it feels so easy doing out door activities or sports. I've also heard that we have mucle memory as well so as I'm getting stronger It won't be as hard to get back to where I am now if I can't excercise as much during the winter.

Hey Jeremy,

I wouldn't get too hooked on 3 lbs a week. If you are being healthy about this, you won't maintain that rate of loss. In general you should expect to lose about 1% of your bodyweight per week - if you're being healthy.

Also keep in mind that weight loss is not really linear. There may be times that you'll seemingly "stall" in your loss, but it could be that your body is doing some recomposing, and shifting things around. Don't get discouraged and give up if that happens.

Also make sure you're eating enough - eating too little can be as bad as eating too much. You need to get enough food to make sure you're getting a good balance of protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. :) I'm wondering, since you said you don't have the energy for your morning cardio, if you're actually getting enough nutrition in.

Hi Kara!

Hmm I guess it could be a lack of nutrition that is slowing me down in the morning. I should have mentioned that I've been working a lot more and It's possible I've been getting less sleep than normal.

Those first 10 days though I felt great in the mornings, I would actually wake up before my alarm went off and be geared and exercising.

Then I just started waking up not feeling up to it so I would take a shower and off to work (still get a good 15 minutes of walking in which I would have good enough energy for). During the day though I feel great as far as energy goes. I do my 3 days a week exercise in the late afternoon. Not to mention I do yard work (cutting grass, trimming hedges, sweeping, pulling weeds) just about every Sunday.

Don't worry about me eating enough, I didn't change my diet except giving up pop and adding fruit. I estimate I take in about 2000 to 2500 calories a day. With my moderate to high activity level that would probably put me around 190 weight.

If your curious, this is a typical day of meals for me:

Bagal for breakfast around 8:00AM
A cup of Coffee around 9:30AM and sometimes around 11:00PM if I'm feeling tired
Half a Ham Sandwich (cheese, lettice, tomato and onion) around 12:00PM
Other half of the Ham Sandwich around 2:30PM
Half a Fruit Cup at 5:00PM
Work out at 5:30/6:00PM (either 15 minutes jog/walk with 30 minutes of weights plus additional 30 minutes walking outside or just 30 minutes walking outside on resting days)
Other half of a fruit cup around 6:30/7:00PM
Dinner is usually where I have vegtables (corn, broccoli, green beans, potatos, carrets, spinich, califlower, whatever I'm in the mood for) with whatever meal I have. General stuff like stews, pastas, meatloaf, skinless chicken, hamburgers, ribs, chinese food or seafood.

Sometimes I have vegtables with lunch If I feel a little more hungry than usual, usually the ham sandwich fills me up.

Sometimes I'll mix it up and have an apple a couple times a week, sometimes I'll have a cup of milk on the weekends and I even have a bowl of ice cream every once and a while (once a week).

So wait, if I'm eating healthy I should expect to lose 1% of my body weight a week. That would be 2.41 Pounds a week right which is between 2-3 pounds, which is what I've been losing. I think the most I've lost is 3.5 pounds last week, but over a 6 week period I've averaged 2.5 pounds weight loss a week which is basically 1% of my body weight.

Well thats good :cheers2:

I don't know if I'm currently eating healthy or not (enough nutriants or whatever) I don't really follow any kind of strict diet, I just eat generally good foods and go from there. I do know that I'm eating a lot healthier than I used to, no pop and now I'm eating fruit so that's a big plus.

Thanks for the reply Kara!

Hey Jeremy,

I decided to comment since your experiences seem to be very close to what I did/am doing. First off, I know when I started eating better, spreading out food at small time increments (3-4 hours) really helped me control my hunger while my body adjusted to the new intake. You will find out that if you keep it up, your body will become used to its feeding times, and you dont even have to watch a clock to know when to eat. However, it sounds like you got a firm grasp on the diet, so that is a positive!

I can totally relate with you about the insane weight coming off at the beginning. I think I dropped 9 pounds in the first week, but it has since dropped to 2-4 pounds weekly, even with a full regiment of cardio/strength training. Its a slow climb to your goal, but at least it gives time for your body to adapt to the changes! :)

Lastly, I would look into getting some more veggies into your diet. Ive been subbing in veggies for fruits for my dinner, and they really go well with anything. Looking good!

EDIT: I missed your post about veggies. Nothing to see here, move along.

Oops .. you know what? I missed the part about "dinner". I saw your list of food ending at 7 p.m. and then I just totally skipped over the "dinner" part - so you're eating a lot more than I thought you were at first.

Sorry about that! :)

Thanks for the support Kara and Andy. Glad to see you approve of my current eating habits.

Andy yeah, that first week is such a tease, I was thinking holy cow 6 pounds in a week if this keeps up I'll be in shape in no time, it didn't take long to get back to reality though. After the first 8 days of losing weight I went a good 6 days of not losing anything and I was thinking wow that's pretty fast for a stall. Ever since then it's been a steady 2 to 3 pounds a week, which is actually great considering I'm still eating great food.

The past times I've lost weight were because of diets where I was only eating certain foods and I couldnt wait to eat good food again, I lost weight fast but I also gained it back pretty fast too. So it's true, diets don't work.

The key is just to cut out really bad foods/drinks like pop, candy and fast food. I never ate fast food and rarely candy in the first place but I did drink plenty of pop.

Currently I'm 240 trying to get to somewhere between 190 and 210. I'm not sure where I'll end up at since I'm not going to change my routine as it's more of a lifestyle now.

Anyway, thanks for the support, I'll keep ya posted.

Hey everyone. Good news I think, since my last post two days ago where I was actually 240.6 I've dropped down to 237.8 which is a good 2.8 pounds lost (hopefully to never be found again!). I wasn't expecting any more drops like that but I guess it's going to happen as my body is adjusting to better eating habits and exercise. I did have a couple brief 2-3 day periods where I would lose 2 to 4 pounds and I would go the next 5 or 6 days only losing a total of 1 pound. I'll take it.

I love this, it's so cool and easy. I had always thought I would be a plus 250 pound guy and nothing I could do would change that, meanwhile all I had to do was give up pop and exercise.

Seriously if there was legislation to force soda-pop companies and fast food companies to be 100% healthy I'd guarantee that America's Obesity problem would be cut in half if not better.

Anyway I'm starting to get really excited about my trip to Key West on the 19th :sifone:. Only 8 Days away, hopefully I can lose another 2 pounds and get to 235. :beerchug:

Hey all,

WooHooo only a few more days until vacation. After working about 10 streight weeks of 60 hours a week I am sooo looking forward to this vacation.

Anyway as for my mini goal of geting to 235 from 237 before I leave on Sunday I'm now half way there at 236. This is so much fun just watching the lbs come off so easily.

I'll tell you I have had so many failed attempts before of getting to this point just to go back up in weight. I feel so much better at this stage. Before it felt like it was so hard to get to 230 or 220 but now, it feels easy and fun which is cool.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm gloating or anything like that but I'm not, I'm just really happy and excited and this is the only place I can really share as most people don't understand what it's like.

:coolgleamA:

Yay, vacation has now started.

I didn't reach 235 though, I'm at 236.2. Oh well.

Sorry I don't have much more of an update but I'm leaving pretty soon here and wanted to say see ya all in a week.

Take care!

peace

Jeremy
