Trying my hardest to loose weight

Hey there,

I am a male at the age of 15, almost 16 (Jan) wanting to loose a bit of weight. My BMI has measured in as 26.6, and I want to have it down to 24, at least.

The reasons for me wanting to loose weight are obvious, I want to lower the risk of fat-related diseases or whatever, and to look far better to others. Now, along with this, I am determined to lower the numbers on the bathroom scales, but I have one problem. I feel embarressed when my family walk past as I'm on the treadmill, their not very supportive, even though loosing weight is a great this to do.

I've been trying my hardest to get their support, but they just... don't give any. I wrote a list of what I want out of loosing weight, and it reached over 30 reasons. I also did something that I never thought I could do, I denied chocolate for the first time in my life, when I was hungry.

I just need a bit of motivation, as it isn't as easy as the stupid informercials say it is... "Just 10 mins a day, three times a week"...

I need some help though, I have a treadmill that can measure the speed of what I am going at. I do a walk at 6.5 km/h and have set it to loose 150 Calories. I am doing this twice a day, once in the morning, and once in the afternoon. In the mornings, I wake up with very sore legs, and limp down the stairs. Is there a way to stop this? I am thinking of setting the treadmill to 100 Cal workout... but I'm not sure that will be enough to loose weight. I am also watching what I am eating, and trust me, it is healthy.

How bad is an egg also?

Any help will be VERY appreciated, I am in desperate need of loosing weight... My self-esteem is dramatically low.

Thank you very much.

The reason your limping is probably because you have suddenly increased the amount of exercising your doing. Your body isn't used to it... try doing a 100cal burn in the morning and then 150 at night or something... and gradually increase it. That way your still doing the exercise but not too intense until your body can handle it.

which reminds me... i must do some exercise. :( lol

Vary your exercise

Hi Stephen
Well done you for starting your regime even without the support of your family. Try and vary your exercise routine as your body will get used to it if you do the same exercise every day. If you can, buy some hand weights and do some upper body exercises every other day to vary your routine and try some simple floor exercises like sit-ups. This will build muscle in other parts of your body and help you to burn more calories (more muscle = more fat burning). Also try and add some short bursts of faster walking to get the oxygen pumping throughout your body.
Eggs are fine as long as you don't overdo them and have too many a week. A small trick I use is to beat 1 egg in a cup, add a little water and then microwave it for 1 minute ( may need a bit longer depending on the strength of the microwave). This seems to add air to the egg and make it seem like a bigger portion, when added to toast it can seem a lot more filling than just a regular boiled or poached egg.

Don't worry, I have the same problem. I haven't told anyone in my family that I'm going to lose weight, because they're not supportive. I don't think I'm morbidly obese, but my self esteem is horrifyingly low at times, and they wouldn't understand that, but fear not. Nothing comes in the way of your will to lose weight.
I mean hey, I don't even step on the treadmill and in about a week I've already lost 4 pounds. I don't doubt that this is going to slow down very, very soon, but I'm delighted at the progress. I've just been cutting down what I eat alot, and whenever I feel hungry I have water. It does help. Cutting down on the chocolate is kinda torturous for me because I love the stuff, but it's actually not that hard to get used to, and indulging in it once in a while isn't a sin. ;)

You can do it. Let us know your progress.

Hey there,

Thank you very very much for your replies, I really do appreciate it.

Yesterday I attempted to only do two seperate (morning, then afternoon) workouts, at a 100 cal routine. My leg's don't hurt as much. I also weighed myself, and for some reason, over the past few days I have dropped from 195.8 lb to 192.3 lb, this is probably because how much food I was eating back then, and now eating now. By seeing this, I am far more motivated.

Today is a test for me though, every Wednesday (NZ time) we go out to lunch, usually at Mc Donalds... I know how much that will effect me, all of the running would;ve been for nothing... I might test myself, and have a go at subway... mind you, this is in front of the REST of my family (cousins, aunties etc), their all pretty much overweight...

If you can give any more tips, that would be great. I'll be surfing the internet this morning for stretching routines, and ways to get muscles (weight lifting, like... how to do it)...

Thanks,

Steven

Hi, I have some advice for you.

If you really want to lose weight, don't walk - run. Running on your treadmill is what will get you real results. When I tried to start losing weight my bro said to me to just push myself as hard as I can whenever i do anything.. it worked.

Don't weigh yourself. At least not for a few months. Your weight varies so much during the day... don't try to stick to it. You'll at one point weigh yourself when you're on a low, and be extremely happy with your apparent loss - only to be shotdown a few days later when it's all back. Just go by what you can see and how you feel.

Just eat less.. people like to say you must eat blabla every day or body goes into "starvation mode" or some rubbish like that. This is not true. When I wanted to lose weight I'd eat 1 or 2 meals a day tops, just that. At first it was kinda hard, but you'll find after a few days your body adjusts and you won't actually need anything more.

Your limping will go away in a few weeks at the longest, it's just because you're not used to doing exercise. You want some motivation? Look in the mirror.

Don't EVER have those stupid girly hissy fits of eating alot of food because you're "depressed". You're not eating because you're depressed, you're eating because you're greedy and it's the only way in which you can satisfy your conscience.

To boost your motivation watch one of those "Fat Club" programs or whatever they are called, you know the ones where the obese guys try to lose weight but really suck at it. That'll make you feel a whole lot better about yourself trust me.

Losing weight is not hard at all. Exercise + Eating less = Weight loss.

I REALLY hope it wasn't your intention to insult most of the people on this board who have gone through this. Maybe this is easy for you, but for a lot of us, overweight issues are EMOTIONAL issues.

Starvation mode is not a myth and not eating right WILL stop your weight loss--and in the end you'll just put back on the weight because you didn't take the time to learn how to eat properly.

hmm...this makes you sound like a complete jerk.

You use other peoples misfortune as a motivator....are you really trying to sound like a jerk?

Alakazam right?

I suggest rephrasing some of you 'advice' so that it doesn't make everyone on here think the worst of you.

Hey,

Well... I have just arrived back home from the mall... I did the complete opposite of what I thought I would do... I denied Mc Donalds, and chose to eat Subway... My mum also showed a bit of support, she brought me a bottle of water, instead of buying a soft drink, so I am pleased to see some support from my family.

When I was walking around the mall, I noticed one thing... the speed that I was going in the mall was pretty much the same that I go when I'm on the treadmill, so tomorrow, I will try a different routine:

Morning:

100 cal walk @ 6.5 km/h
20 cal jog @ 8.5 km/h - To be increased by 10 cal per day

Afternoon:

100 cal walk @ 6.5 km/h
25 cal jog @ 8.5 km/h - To be increased by 10 cal per day

-----

I think this may balance things out a bit... This topic is mainly for me to record my results, but also for support and stuff...

Thanks

First off, congrats on making the decision to start a change!

I'm certainly no expert, but I think you might want to reconsider how you think about your cardio - I mean the fact that you define it by 'calories'. A short high intensity bout of cardio can burn the same 'calories' as a long low intensity, but the impact they have on your body, life (in terms of time spent), etc is pretty different.

I personally think it's healthier and more useful to think in terms of two things: intensity and duration. For one thing, no one really knows if those calorie meters on machines are totally accurate. Second, the purpose of cardio is FAR beyond just the idea of 'burning off lunch' or something. That being said, it's minorly useful, just to compare one bout of the same intensity exercise to another (150 cal walk is *more* in some way than a 100 cal walk).

Cardio does burn calories, but it also improves your heart function, boosts your metabolism, and gives you energy.

I can't tell you what's best exactly, but I've seen a lot of people recommend alternating days of high-intensity/short-duration with medium/medium and low-intensity/long-duration. But it may take you a little while of getting into the swing of things to get your high intensity up there. My biggest psychological block to high intensity was that the instant I broke a sweat I wanted to stop! (I felt "gross" - talk about years of gender conditioning!)

Good luck!

Best thing to do. Is try to remove all the bad food you eating. Eat well. Try to get involved in sports at class. Are you able to go for a 30 min run each morning when you wake up before you eat. The treadmill is enough. Not sure how your treadmill measure the calories lost, but 150 seems a bit too low. Good luck, and trust me if you work hard you should loose it. Good luck. I wish I started watching my weight when younger. Try not to think too much about loosing the weight, its makes harder for you, when you stressing about it.
Thanks

Hi - a few things.

Ignore anyone's lack of support or any invalidation of your efforts to get better. Ignore ignore ignore. Talk to these people about innocent unimportant things like how the weather is or whatever.

Eat lots and lots of vegetables. I especially suggest you do this before meals because it will make you less hungry for bad food as your body will get the nutrition it needs and it will also fill you up.

Fruits in the morning can be very beneficial and can help your body eliminate wastes.

Drink lots of herbal teas without sugar. Try stevia or some natural sweatener if you need one.

Get protein from good sources - soy milk, pumpkin seeds, beans, nuts.
