Tri's Journal

Less screentime would be good for all of us I think Tri. Well done on maintaining your weight while you were away!

I agree, it's shocking to see how much an average person can spend per week watching a screen.

Thanks! I am glad that I didn't gain, and losing weight on vacation was not an objective (that goal would be doomed for failure). But losing weight is back on the agenda. I look forward to leaving the 90s for good (a few weeks ago I was 89.5 kg for a day, but that was after fasting for 2 days (which is not a habit of mine btw)). I estimate that that will take me less than a month.

Ok, a crazy idea just popped up in my head: to reward myself for losing weight with computer gear.

The idea is, that for every 100 grams that I lose, I get 10 euro's, that I can spend on building a new computer. I am planning to build one anyways, so it's not like it's costing me any more money, but it makes me feel like I earned it (and vice versa it helps me get some extra motivation to lose weight).

To make it extra affordable, I try to earn some of the money by selling some of the stuff that I have. I estimate that I can fund a quarter to half of the price of the computer this way (which, when finished, will be over 1000 euros).

Also, I have started a career as a software developer (which is a shift from my university studies) and I have my own small business on the side, which has been dormant for the last 12 months, but I plan to awaken it again by allowing myself to do some side projects, starting new year (so I can earn this computer back, and some extra). A computer is my main tool of trade, so I see it as a good investment.

I read in a book that I am close to finishing now that it's good to start with giving yourself a few points already. So, I will start counting down from 92.0 kg. My current weight is around 91.5 kg, so I have already earned my first 50 euros. I don't expect to go lower than 77.0 kg, so my eventual budget will be 150 (times 100 grams) * 10 (euros per 100 grams) = 1500 euros.

I have a few business ideas that I want to start (or continue) executing once I have a good computer at home, and I hope to earn this investment back at least a hundredfold (I believe in my ideas ;)).

Doing something you´re passionate about, inside or outside your day job, is quite likely the best thing anyone can do. I like the reward system idea!

That sounds like a pretty solid reward system to me. Not only will it motivate you to lose weight but when you reward yourself you'll be rewarding yourself with something useful as well. It's a win-win!!!

Thanks everyone! It's definitely a win-win! The only aspect that can "lose" is my wallet. However, losing this weight is something that I have wanted for a decade now, and I see that there are many benefits, so it is worth some investment.

I will give myself some additional rules though, so that I can finance this responsibly:

1. From now on, I will not buy any more sandwiches at the store. I will carry my own lunch to work or when I am traveling.
2. I will sell some stuff and make at least 250 euros from it (up to 500).
3. I won't buy any more coffee at Starbucks or other coffee shops (this is the most painful one, it is a habit of mine, but it will save me a good amount of money).
4. I won't eat out anymore and start cooking again.

As you may notice, some of these habits are not only beneficial to my wallet, but also to my belly. ;)

#Update: my weight was 91.0 this morning, and I did eat a lot yesterday (I celebrated my birthday, so that was fine), so I really lost a few hundred grams in the last week.

This week I will try something new. I will double my efforts to change my habits. I will exercise more, eat less (but healthy) and work on the points I mention above. The goal is to be sub-90 before the end of the week. Let's call this a "sprint-week". The week after, I will do a "maintain-week", where I will try to stick with the new goals that I introduced in this week, but I won't introduce any new ones, and I will be a bit easier on myself (so that I can learn to appreciate this new lifestyle). I will be happy if I lose a few hundred grams instead of another full kg in this second week.

Had a fine week, but not for weight loss. (Until Sunday) I probably gained around 0.5 kg (hard to say what my real weight is now... I ate a lot of salt).

Anyways, yesterday I started to get back and I had a deficit large enough to lose 0.1 kg. I am going to repeat that again today.

I don't do it a lot, but I want to try setting a weight goal again. My goal will be to be <88.0 kg before the end of the year. It's a challenging goal, but it's certainly possible.

When I am at 88, I will be very close to my lowest weight in the last decade, which was around 84 kg. When I am lighter than 84 (hopefully somewhere in February), I will approach the weight I was in my late teens.

An ambitious goal, but judging by the rest of your diary I'm going to assume it's realistic. Around 4 kg in four and a half weeks, is it? If it motivates you to make good food choices during a challenging time of the year I'm all for it.

@LaMaria - I just use it as a vision... I plan to succeed for this goal, meaning I will try to make sufficient changes to my lifestyle so that I am able to make it.

4 kg is about right, in 4.5 weeks. If I am able to do only 2.5 or 3 kg, I will still be happy. But I will go for the full 4, I believe that I can do it! :D
