So, you have just started working out? How many miles a day are you pounding out? Are you getting pain mainly during exercise? When you start a program you want to begin very slowly. Overuse injuries, such as tendonitis, are common to people who try to do too much, too fast. A proper progression is necessary to avoid these injuries. The locality of your pain suggests possible tendonitis. However, I would take a look at your shoes as well.

To help alleviate, or decrease, this pain I would warm up properly, stretch, take an anti-inflammatory, and ice after exercise.

How about your shoes? Are they good ones? If not, you may want to treat yourself to a decent pair of new ones. I find that when my sneakers get older (or are not good quality) I get the shin splints and other annoying "pains".

Good luck :)

Something else you might try is to find someone who is specialized in running and have them look at your form. Improper running biomechanics are a common culprit in these types of injuries, as are overtraining and footwear. In Canada (and 3 stores in the states), we have the Running Room, which is a store specialized in running gear. They also give mini-conferences on running. Check your area, see what's out there....it could be the key to finding out the origin of your problem.

Also, strengthen your lower leg muscles...calves and anterior muscles of the shin, and the muscles under your feet..to get the latter, put a towel down on the ground and place your foot on it (do this barefoot)..use your toes to scrunch up the towel and do this for 2 whole towel lengths.

Good luck! :)

hi,

thanks for the reply guys i think the problem was over exertion and thus have started to use the machine more on a progressive basis. Although i think i have managed to do my left knee in, i get a horrible twinge when i get past the 1.5 mile mark, i used to play a lot of soccer (university life put a stop to this) and to be honest i have never had a serious injury before, i suppose i should stop for a few days and the let the knee recover? i use a pair of nikes i dunno how well the are perceived, but are nike shox trainers any good? apart from stretching and warming up do i need to use any more other kit ie knee supports or special insoles?

many thanks in advance

The shoes really need to fit your foot and your walking/running style. So the Nike shoes might be good for you, but they might not be. Cost and name really are a secondary factor. If you haven't done it yet, I would suggest that you go to a specialty store and have someone look at the way you walk/run and suggest the correct shoes. I did, and it made a HUGE difference in what I was able to do. I went from having pain for a few days after running a mile to no problem doing 3+ miles (over time as well, but the shoes were a big part of the lack of pain).
