Treadmill

Hi I am a new member as of today.

I had a baby boy 8 months ago and I am in need of a workout consisting of walking/running on treadmill.

I have been fast walking on treadmill for 30 minutes 5 days a week and been eating healthy for last 2 weeks. Is 30 minutes long enough for weight loss?

Also, what workout tapes are reputable? A silly question too, what slims calves, I noticed my calves look bulky since working out on treadmill.

I'll appreciate all advice given, thank you guys.

Belated congradulations on the baby :)

You have to see for yourself if 30 minutes is long enough. If you notice results within a month, then maybe it is enough. If not, try 60-90 minutes per day.

Welcome to the forum and congrats!!!

I would recommend searching for HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) for weight loss. Personally, intervals shed fat faster than any steady cardio session.

The question of time is relative. I'd ask myself if my intensity is high enough for a given amount of time for weight loss.

I don't know anything about workout tapes. Sorry.

I think the time you spend on the treadmill is not what's important. The intesity is important. DO't do the same thing every day. Try sprint intervals one day, steady state the next, incline the next.

I use to try home workout tapes. Every last one I tried (and I tried at least 20) was CRAP! I bought home weight training equipment and now I heavy weight train and I have had incredible results.

Good luck!

I have been in the exact position as you (except the baby part) about 4 weeks ago and my prized slim calf muscles bulked up after 2 weeks on the treadmill... HIIT or not. I did lose some body fat and felt leaner but after 2 weeks I felt "tired" using the treadmill... i was getting sick of it and my calf muscles got bigger.

Try running outside the natural way as this does not seem to put too much strain on the calf muscle like the treadmill does and this also helps move other muscles. Also, try skipping rope. The key is variety. If you do the same exercise/machine all the time your body will adapt to it soon enough... like your calf muscles did.

To help lessen the bulk of my calf muscles I started doing reps standing on my tiptoes... HIIT way. I do 10 slow ones then 10 double time ones while resting my hands on the back of a chair so I don't get outbalanced. After a week my calf muscles seem to have "lifted up" and not expand horizontally.

I have this wonderful tape at home which I do 2 times a week for variety. It is pretty old... but dang! It's great! It's the Jane Fonda's New Workout released in 1985. It has a beginners (30 min) and advanced part (1 hour). The advanced part consists of 15 minutes warm up and stretch, 25 min cardio/aerobics, and 20 min floor works which concentrates on abs, glutes and thighs... and oh man! the floor works are great!!! It gets intense enough to make you LOVE the inhale exhale after the exercise and feel empowered after all of it.

I'm also looking for other good ones... if you know any... :)
I also have Claudia Schiffer upper and lower body workout. It doesn't have cardio... but concentrates on a muscle group and works out that. This is good once a week when you just wanna concentrate on muscle development and don't feel like jumping around.

Sarah & Josie,
Thanks for your ideas. :)
Guess what? I just ordered the Winsor Pilates from TV the other day. OK, I know it's from TV and who knows, but I had to try something. Jane Fonda, wow I forgot about those years ago. Well hey whatever works, right? I will post when I see results from this tape, hopefully I get results. Josie, thank you especially for that calf muscle workout with chair. I will start those asap. THANK YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
