Training advice for people with minor heart conditions

I'm a 32 year old female who has had a minor heart condition for years that has become more exasperated in the last 3 :( (it's a type of SVT). This has resulted in many aspects of my life becoming more restrictive, including exercising.

I am waiting on a second cardio ablation which will hopefully sort me out, or get a pacemaker fitted (currently controlled with beta blockers). However as I am a fitness junkie I am finding it extremely frustrating and depressing not being able to exercise to my previous capacity. I do have a sports degree but am a bit rusty so if anybody could give any advice or tips on good exercise programmes for people with cardiac issues I'd be very grateful.

My cardiologoist has confidence in my knowledge due to my degree etc but I am used to running/swimming and pushing myself to the full as used to compete so am at a loss how to slow down a bit without it being so frustrating or looking so unfit because I can barely break into a run anymore without my heart rate going through the roof!

I'm also needing to begin a progressive training programme as I am doing an Everest Base Camp trek in April 2008 (providing my operation is successful).[:D]

To be honest we simply can't offer up any advice other than ask your doctor what you are approved to do.

I can tell you Supraventricular Tachycardia is helped with exercise and proper diet. What I would do is draw up an exercise program to pass by to your doctor to get the okay on.

Your diet program should include a nutrition plan. Put a key focus on fruit/veggies and good fats, lots of good fats.

Your training program COULD include moderate interval training while monitoring your heart rate. Ask your doctor what your MHR should be, signs to watch for during exercise, things to keep with your while exercising.

I would also ask them to approve for you a resistance work program as well.

All these things are good for your condition, but you need a guideline/base to follow first.

Thanks,

I suppose it was stating the obvious but when you are frustrated you sometimes just wish for that magical answer! I'm grateful I don't have a really serious condition so I shouldnt really moan either.

I'm currently working on a progressive plan that will also be fairly informal as I have to listen to how the old body copes over the next few months. Mainly low aerobic stuff like hill-walking, a bit of jogging, swimming and easy weight and toning exercises to help build up my muscle stamina as well.

Diet usually very good I know its importance in sport nutrition but thanks for reminding me, I'll review it again as I'm sure a few bad habits have crept in!

I think I just needed that shove to get on and do it so thanks, one reply seems to have done the trick!

I'll let you know how I get on.

I am glad you have a start glenda and please do keep us informed. If you keep specific guidelines maybe we can help you figure out some more on your own :)
