Trainer says not to expect weightloss I am confused

After losing 16lbs since January 1st with the help of this website, low fat diet, walking and exercise dvd I decided last week to join the gym as I was getting bored with exercise and needed more motivation.

Today I had assessment with trainer and she said not to expect weightloss for another couple of weeks because instead of losing fat I will increase muscle and this will result in less weightloss on scales.
The program I was given included a lot of weight lifting machines at lowest weight.
I still want to lose weight and I will be dissapointed if all my hard work will result in no weightloss. Is this usual?????
I am 5 ft 0 and weigh now 148 lbs. My aim is to lose another stone in the next six weeks.

Yes this is normal. She'll probably be working you to your maximum potential. While you probably wont lose a number on the scale due to muscle gain, I'll bet your measurements will go down.

For the first 2-4 weeks, measure your progress by how you feel and how you look, rather than how much you weigh.

Thanks for the swift reply. I suppose it all makes sense but I would have thought it would be better to lose more weight first and then tone up. Would the purpose of the elliptical, stepper and threadmill be cardio and so more weight loss. I will still be doing about a half an hour on these. I would be dissapointed if I stayed at this weight for the next couple of weeks not much of a motivation is it?

It is hard to see the same number or a higher number, but honestly if you tone WHILE you're doing your program you will get results tenfold faster, I promise.

I lost my 20lbs in just under two months. That's 10lbs a month, that's amazing progress, and that's because I was doing weight training.

Then I started doing cardio only and in the next four months I lost 6lbs, and I was eating even better than before... so definitely go with the weight training. It just sucks when you're first starting out.

Just take some measurements of your bust, hips, stomach, thighs, neck, and etc. Then re-take them about a month later. That's MUCH better motivation than some stupid number on a scale.

You're looking at things from the wrong angle IMO. Such an emphasis on weight is unhealthy if it gets in the way of optimizing body composition and performance. Who cares what the number on the scale says if you love what's happening in the mirror and how your clothes are fitting?

That said, I doubt you're going to be gaining enough muscle given the fact that you're dieting that you won't notice any loss on the scale... assuming your nutrition is accounted for.

Especially if your trainer has you doing nothing but machines on the lowest setting. In which case I'd question why you're paying someone to stand there and count your reps. Machines are pretty self-explanatory.

Hi Steve
I dont have a personal trainer. This was a trainer at the gym. I am paying for the use of the machines. I had an assessment and fitness test today. I know it the end goal is to look better and feel better.

I suppose I was just getting obsessed with my ticker. Whenever I weigh myself and see a weightloss I cant wait to update my ticker. Obsessive isnt it. Thanks for the replies.

That's why I'm not too much a fan of those tickers. Obsession over scale weight isn't healthy IMO. It gives the scale control over how you feel about this lifestyle and that's simply ass backwards.

Focus on the process and the rest will fall into place.

Ah well ticker has helped me so far. Just checked out your pics Steve. When I am looking for a personal trainer can I give you a shout.

I'm always around the way... here or on my forum ready and willing to offer advice. :)

Don't let pics fool you though... I know a lot of trainers that look fantastic. They couldn't train their dog to sit... let alone train someone to reach a physique of fitness goal optimally or safely.

I paid for a bunch of expensive personal trainer sessions. Set me up wtih a work-out to do on my own and had me do crazy stuff that had me exhausted by the end of the session.

Then I started to goto the gym 3 days a week (as opposed to 4-5) doing strength training with my friend who is no expert. I went off my diet shortly after to gain (I couldnt help myself) and I just look at pictures of myself before I started and now, and Its a noticeable difference in my face. I thought people were being nice or talking about how I weighed like a year + ago when they were asking "did you lose weight?" I've gained like 20 lbs (give or take) and I look so much better.

I also never went up in weights with the personal trainer who had me using machines by myself (I think this had to do with me never actually trying.)

Get a good program and skip the personal trainers. You'd be better off finding a friend to buddy up with you at the gym. You get the accountability of a personal trainer, but save a bunch of money. Its more fun to go with a friend too.

So you paid for a workout, but were lazy, so you recommend skipping a trainer? Doesnt really make much sense to me.

A good trainer is worth the money. Of course I'm biased. But I'm confident that I've helped my clients on a few levels more than they could've done on their own.

They're just not plentiful.

And none are necessary for fat loss.

No weight loss this week.

:willy_nilly:Its one week since I joined the gym and I have being five times. I was strict with my diet and I have not lost any weight. I also feel bloated. Is there anything else I can do to see weight loss. My goal was to lose a stone in six weeks and my time is now running out I have only 4 weeks to wedding and I am a bridesmaid. I dont understand how going to the gym and dieting doesnt help weight loss. How long should it take before I see something come off the scales. I dont want to be toned at this weight. I need to lose more weight first before I tone up.

Please help I am panicking now....

Hey skinny one,

I think you're a bit confused still. If you've been eating well and going to the gym 5 times a week you will be losing fat. In other words you will be getting skinnier!!!!!

Isn't that what you want!?

The only reason that the getting skinnier hasn't shown on the scales is that at the same time as losing all of that fat, you have been developing your muscles, which weigh more.

So no, the number isn't going down on the scales - but you are losing fat and you are getting skinnier. Keep it up and you will look amazing at the wedding!

Hi Happy and Healthy
Thanks for the motivation. I still have not lost weight since joining the gym and it is not showing in my measurements either.
I understand I may be toning up but surely it should be showing.
Will it take long to see results or will I be at this plateau for a while. I am panicking at the moment I cant help it I would just love to see some results.
So far I have being to the gym eight times. Half an hour cardio and half an hour weights. Should I see some results soon.

What is your diet like and how are you monitoring it?

Where are you taking measurements?

My weighing scales must be broke......

:banghead:Hey Steve. I dont really call it a diet just healthy eating. An average day would be:
Breakfast: Oatmeal or crunchie nut cornflakes with low fat milk
Lunch: 2 slices of wholemeal bread toasted with tomato and low fat spread.
Dinner: either a weight watchers meal ( about twice a week )
or one potato with veg and roast chicken or fish.
Usually 2 fruits a day either apple orange or banana
I love my odd cup of tea with low fat milk and sweeteners.

This has worked well for me since christmas and it is a pattern I can follow but I dont want to cut down much more.
I am going to the gym on average 4 days per week and I am working hard usually half hour on eliptical , bike and stepper and then weights for half an hour. Is this enough.
I am size 14 dress size now ( irish sizes ) and really want to get into a size 12
in 4 weeks time. I just have to. Is there anything else I should do.
What would help burn fat at the gym?

As for measuring I do measure once a week and I dont think I have lost anything around waist stomach or thighs.
I think I am at my natural weight for me right now but because I am so small I look hefty. Please help........
