Total beginner - everything seems confusing

Hi there,

I'm 26, and due to a fast metabolism, I've always managed to look like I'm in decent shape so I've never really thought about the gym before. However, now, I do want to feel better, as well as look a bit better, so I'm starting to take my first few baby steps in the world of organised exercise!

I've never been to a gym, and have only gone jogging twice, ever (and both those times was around a local park, and I got tired after 2 miles). I walk 30 mins every day, and can do this fine but I know my fitness is terrible.

So, complete begineer.

I have a few goals, and I joined this forum to try and get some support into pointing me in the right direction, and I don't mind being treated like an idiot (which I am!) in having things explained.

I currently weigh 11.5 stone, I'm 6 foot 1, and I just about carry it off, I don't look too thin, although I am what people would call skinny.

My goals are to:
  1. Increase my stamina
  2. Add muscle, especially to arms and legs (basically, "pad" out a bit so I dont look so skinny)
  3. Have more energy generally

I'm not after a 6-pack, and I don't think I'll have the time or inclination to push myself to super-fitness levels. I just want to look better, feel better and take those first steps.

I'm a little confused, because every fitness website I read mentions food supplements, which have long medical names which make me switch off immediately. I understand nutrition is important, and again, that's something I need to learn. I don't eat fast food, don't smoke, don't drink alcohol, and limit the fizzy drinks. I drink around 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day, get my 5 a day, so my diet isn't terrible, but I've no idea if it's "right" or not.

My plan of action so far is:
  1. Join a 5-a-side football team (which I've done, and played 3 games so far)
  2. Increase my fitness by going jogging 2-3 times a week
  3. Maybe buy some weights and do some reps at home

For the moment, I'm keen to do things at home - it might sound silly, but I want to get my fitness to a decent point to then join a gym, and not totally embarrass myself. I know that's properly the wrong attitude, but my logic is that I can gain some stamina by going jogging, then if I join a gym, it'll boost my good starting point, whereas if I join a gym now, I might be so disheartened, I won't want to go again.

I'm also thinking that my two goals of increase stamina (jogging = good cardio = increase stamina, I'm assuming!) and putting on some muscle might not be possible - can I do both?

Right, I'm going to shut up now, but if anyone has any useful links or advice to give me, especially some not including abbreviations or technical jargon, and especially any hints of stuff to do at home to start with, I'd appreciate it. As a way of explaining my ignorance, if a website says "10 min warm up", I'm immediately confused as I don't know what constitutes a warm up, or what I should be doing!

Thank you for any support in advance.
