Tone vs. bulk

I'm a firm believer in that there is no such thing as "toning." And unless you are lifting heavy and have the proper diet, you're not going to get "bulky."

i agree...ive heard from a buddy of mine that he wants to get "toned" but not bulky...i told him not to worry,it doesnt happen overnight (but if only it did)...

one thing that you may experience: i had exactly the same mentality, i wanted to be toned but not big. i started at 155-160 lbs. i wanted to put on lean muscle and get to about 170. i got to 170 and immediately wanted to be 180. then after that i wanted to be 190. i now fluctuate between 190 and 195, and im hoping to be 200-205 by the end of the year.

the way i "tone" is i start with 30lbs off my maximum weight then do that untill i can do more and take another 30 lbs off then do that till i cant do it any more do it unitl you can barely lift 20lbs. do that every other day on different muscle groups and you'll notice results. a good whey protein shake after words helps too

'Tone' is a result of having a low body fat and at least a moderate amount of muscle. You acheive this from bulking up and then cutting, not the way you lift weights.

Exactly. I wish magazines and such would stop using this word because it really confuses people!

This is for a school research project. And I just wanted some good facts for it. I'm not worried about the way I am lifting or getting "bulky". But I really like what Man of Steel wrote :) Thanks for the replies!

Right on Man Of Steel.

You cannot tone a muscle. you can work a muscle to gain endurance, to strengthen it, or to increase the size of it. The toned look is achieved through lifting to create a good muscle base and then losing fat.

Good luck with your project.
