Well, here's a quick run down.

I've always been heavy. Not terribly fat, and having a large frame people often underguess my weight by 10-15kg, but I'm still way overweight. People talk about metabolism and yes, mine is pretty efficient at converting everything to stored energy, but the fact is that if you're fat then you're getting more calories in than out.

I have been slender and very fit once in my life, back in high school when I was a keen cyclist. It was amazing, but I rediscovered sloth and snacks. Back around '96 I weighed in at 85kg, but was less muscled than I am now. Still, it felt good, and picture from then look so different. About 18 months ago I was a lot lighter than I was before I got started again, but bad habits reared their head and I piled the weight back on plus more.

So, a couple of months ago I realised that I was in trouble with my weight. I hit 121.5 kg (267.3 lb) and thought `this can't go on'. I was snacking every night. I would think often during the day about all the nice snacky things I would eat before and after a fairly large dinner, and would feel a warm happy glow just thinking about it. Mmm, sugar, chocolate, chips The thing is, I know a great deal about proper nutrition and weight loss, I know how unhealthy this extra weight is, I know about diabetes risks and heart disease and so on.

The difference between knowing and doing... well..

Anyway, back around September I started getting more control of my life. I bought some new cookware that was a very good size for making appropriate servings of food and cooking oil free. I ate better at work. I had already stopped taking money with me when I went to work, because around 1:30 a food truck rolled up and I was almost helpless to resist.

Soon after I noticed I had lost a little weight. I hadn't been thinking seriously about losing the weight again, in truth I had been discouraged by my lack of willpower. But with some weight gone, I started to get more motivated. Just as good, my partner was losing weight too and she was very happy with that.

So I started getting more into it. Eating less sugar and fat made me want it less. An amazing turn came one night when I bought a couple of chocolate bars from the supermarket more out of habit than desire. I ate half of one, thought `Am I really enjoying this all that much?'. I decided I wasn't, and put it in the cupboard. I never ate them, just gave them away with no regret. Wow! Prior to that I would have gobbled them down and looked for more.

I started doing the couch to 5k running plan, which is working out really well for me. I find myself looking forward to it in the evenings because it's not a hard and painful workout, but really gets the heart and lungs going.

So now as of this post, I've lost 12kg (26.4 lb). I have a fairly active job so that helps burn the calories too. I'm hoping to lose another 24.5 kg (53 lb) by mid next year, although I will change that goal if I'm feeling happy with where I am. I'd like to be at 90 kg at the minimum.

I have one night of bad eating a week, which happens to be tonight. Fried chicken and chips, and a nice cold beer or two. Doing this puts a small dent in my weight loss rate, but it's a reward for not having lost track of my plan during the week.

This forum is really great, I've tried a few places and none of them have the activity I've seen here.

Forgot to add these originally :
HW : 121.5 kg (267.3 lb)
CW : 109.5 kg (240.9 lb)
GW : 85 kg (187 lb)
Weight lost so far : 12 kg (26.4 lb)
Weight to go 24.5 kg (53.9 lb)

Hi Tomble :)
Welcome to the WLF and congratulations for taking control in doing what you need to do to reach your goals! Sometimes, just getting started is the hardest step, and here you are 26 pounds closer to your goal - that is FANTASTIC!

It sounds like you've made a lot of changes that will help not only reach your desired weight but stay there! Good for you :D

Hey Tomble, welcome to WLF! Great job on the loss so far, your obviously doing the right things for yourself. Keep up the great work!

Well, my weight went up a bit today, but that was no real surprise. Friday night's my `eat some junk food!' night, and I really enjoyed it. I think that's the point of a lot of that sort of food, as well as confectionary. You can eat it occasionally as a treat and really enjoy it, but you shouldn't eat it daily.

Thanks to those who welcomed me here :)

So, I ate a whole bunch of bad stuff last night, but I was kind of expecting to. I was a bit heavier the next morning, but I think that some of that is just `gut weight', food in transit to give it a polite description. I'm still ahead of where I was planning on being as far as general weight loss goes, so I can afford the occasional splurge!

Anyway, I'll be doing my second run of week 2 of Couch to 5K tonight, if the rain holds off for long enough. If not I might do some weights.

Phew! I got rid of the weight which I put on during the weekend. That sort of quick weight tends to go away pretty fast, but still I was glad to see it go. I am at the same place I was about a week ago, and I want to shift another kilo before the end of the week. I need to crack the 110 kg mark! It's like a wall and once I'm over it, I'll be a lot happier. Those big round numbers are kind of scary! Then it will be a race to the 100kg mark! I got to 102 about 2 years ago or so, and I want to get past it. Oh, to see the 90 kg mark again. My goal is to get rid of that `1' at the beginning of my weight.

Didn't go for a run last night, it was cold and rainy, and I ended up going to bed instead. Slack, I know. I must run tonight!

I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and the extra body weight is a real bonus. I guess I'm going to have to learn new techniques as I go along :)

Mind you, technique beats brute force any day. I've wrestled against people half my size who can get a nasty arm lock on me and win despite being outclassed in size and strength, because they REALLY know what they are doing. Also, being fitter will really help because I quite often run out of air and have move a lot slower than I would like.

Anyway, that's enough from me for now!

Hey Tomble.

It's a bit late but welcome and well done on working out your plan etc. Running is a very efficient way to burn calories, a lot of people on here have reported great results with that.

It's just a case of taming the eating habits...! (Easier said than done, eh? ;))

Good luck, anyway.

Allrighty! I'm down to 109kg (240lb)! I finally cracked the 110 kg mark!

It all seems so achievable - 7 kg until I hit my lowest weight in YEARS - maybe by the end of the year! Then I'm going to smash through the 100kg mark and never look back. WOOHOO! :) :D :) :D

Went out to a friends place last night to celebrate his 32nd birthday. Pizza was ordered, and I ate more than I wanted to, had a couple of beers, then cheesecake! Oddly enough I couldn't finish the cheesecake slice I had, I was too full. My stomach has definitely become smaller, as I would have gone for seconds in the past.

I stepped onto the scales with dread this morning... Still 109kg! If I hadn't splurged last night I would be lower, but I'm still very happy with that result!

Hiya Tomble! I think I'm a bit late for the welcome party but.. Welcome!!..lol
You're doing great - keep it up!! :D:D:D

Thanks! This site is great, it's nice to be able to talk about these sorts of things and my weight and so on, knowing that everyone here is going through similar things.

Progress!

I'm now down to 108.5kg (238.7 lb). Yayyy!

Went for the second run of week 2 from the Couch to 5K running plan. I think I'm going to skip straight to week 3 from here, because for the last run I just kept going for 5 minutes rather than 1.5 minutes. It was pretty good, I'm getting to that point of fitness where I can run and not slowly run out of breath, but jussssst keep up with my oxygen needs. My dog is loving it, too!

Wow!! Great job!! From what I hear, that couch to 5k program can be gruling. But look at you - skipping ahead like an old pro!! Keep it up!! :D:D:D

same here, i'm a little late for the welcoming party, but welcome anyway! Great job on your lifestyle change so far. And I love that you had a "eat some junk food" night. I think that if we deny ourselves too much, we ruin the whole effect when we jump on the things we deny ourselves when they show up.

You are doing wonderfully! Keep up the great work!

Hey Tomble! Just stopping by to say 'hi' and see how you're doing. I love reading your posts around the forum, always well thought out and informative. I'm going to start the couch to 5K program in a couple of weeks. I hope I have as much success as you have had. Good luck getting into the 90's. You're doing such a great job.

Haha, thanks! I keep thinking `Wait, I'm actually JOGGING...!', and being kind of amazed. I think that skipping ahead one session is going to be kind of tough, but I'm thrilled to be able to see the changes!

Better yet, tonight's the junk food night! Mmm, I can almost taste that fatty food now.. Hahah :D Actually I crave it less and less the longer I go with this weight loss, but I still like to have it.

Thanks so much! I think you'll do well, just keep to your plan and it'll happen. If I can crack 100kg, I'll be as light as I've been for maybe 10 years. It's like a good dream slowly coming true :)

Oh, and keep us posted on your couch to 5k running plan.
