To those who have lost 70-90 pounds...

I'm in the process of losing that much weight. But I was wondering if there were any issues with loose skin. Also, how long did it take for you to lose the weight?

Thanks! :D

they are giving advice and speaking from experience. Their post added to this thread whilst yours added nothing to it at all. How can anyone say for sure if this individual will have issues with their skin, it will be different for everyone.

I've gone from 400-250, I am 24 years old and my height is 6'4.

I have issues with loose skin under my arms and at the side of my moobs. My stomach is surprisingly tight but I still have a gut so I cant say for sure that loose skin wont develop there.

I have a ton of stretch marks everywhere but I can already tell they've started to fade somewhat and it hasn't even been a year since I weighed 400.

I agree with Heidi, there a lot of factors in whether your skin will "bounce back" - Your starting weight, how many times you've lost and gained (that can cause you to lose elasticity), your age, your diet, and how fast you lose the weight, etc.

From what I've seen the people who's skin bounced back best without surgery where people under the age of 35, ate healthy, didn't really lose a lot of weight then gain it back and then lose it over and over, and lost the weight slowly. But even some people who have all that going for them still ended up with some lose skin, everyone is different, every body is different. My best advice is to lose the weight slowly, that will help give the skin more time to tighten up (and most of the medical advice say losing 1-2 pounds a week is best). Just don't stress about it. :)

Speaking solely from MY experience... I went from 260 lbs to 160 (currently re-comping so I'm around 175-180), I'm 5'8 1/2-9"ish. I have quite a few large stretch marks but I don't really have any noticeable loose skin. I still have quite a bit of weight left to lose so I'll definitely let you know if it does pop up.

There are so many factors and I think the only ones that are real = genetics, diet and age. Some people are extremely obese and have very few stretch marks and others gain maybe 20-30 lbs and have stretch marks.

Another big misconception with loose skin is; even if it looks like loose skin, it may not necessarily be loose skin. If it isn't extremely flat when you fold it, I'm talking maybe a couple centimeters; there is still fat in there. If you can't see your abs or pecs, or have a large amount of muscle in other spots besides where the "loose skin" is, I would call it fat. My stomach use to sag and as I lost more weight it returned to "normal"

People set a goal of "140 lbs" or "120 lbs" and then when they hit there they think their journey is done and think surgery is necessary... it definitely isn't. Once you start re-comping your body and lifting heavy, eating properly your body does change drastically. Your work will never be done and surgery definitely isn't the only option if you do have loose skin.

Just curious - what does "re-comping" mean? :)

I am guessing he means gaining muscle, changing body composition.

Unfortunately I don't think it's a realistic solution for women though. While a man can build huge muscles to fill out any loose skin he could have, women can only gain so much muscle.

True that, unless they want to look like one of those lady body builders...
I don't think my boyfriend would like me looking more masculine than he does. lol

Personal experience;

I was fat as I was a kid, I was fat as I was growing. I was over 250 pounds for years, at my peak I was 305 pounds. I started losing weight when I was in my young 20's. I have a LOT of lose skin. I think there are a lot of factors when it comes to lose skin. Such as how long you were over weight, genes, how slow/fast you lost the weight, etc...

Theres always a chance that you'll have lose skin when losing a significant amount of weight, but the benefits far outweigh that risk.

I've lost about 70 pounds (230lbs - 161lbs) over the past 3 years, my goal is to lose 10 to 15 more. I'm 32 years old and am now the thinnest been in my life. My skin is not super tight, but I can't yet say I'll be left with loose skin, I still have a bit more to lose. Exercising helps a lot with toning for sure though, and think I look a lot better than I would have had I only concentrated on my diet.

I lost 32 kilo approx. (about 70 LBS) and I don't really have loose skin.
Still need to lose 25 kilo's (55 LBS) though, and hoping it'll still this way cause if I can prevent lose skin I will.
Not sure if it works or not, but I use firming body lotions, moisturising is a good thing anyway.
I'm covered in stretch marks though, but I got them from gaining weight, not losing.

I lost a majority of my weight within the first 6 months. I was losing roughly 4lbs a week.

160-165 LBS:

175-180 LBS(CURRENT):

Women can still recomp... you just have to lift HEAVY weights. If you aren't in the gym everyday of the week, eating enormous amounts of food, taking steroids and shit you will never gain the amount of muscle that female bodybuilders have. Trust me, women get scared so easily of losing their femininity but it just isn't possible without 100% dedication. Hell, there are guys that struggle to put on any amount of noticeable muscle.

If you're a female suffering from loose skin, halt your weight loss, start upping the calories and trying to fill the loose skin in with muscle. If you have the option of surgery, I guess you could go that route but you could save yourself a lot of pain, suffering and money by just recomping. If it doesn't work then by all means go for the surgery.

Also, don't just assume because you're 140 lbs that it is loose skin... if it looks like fat, it most likely is fat. Even if it sags down it is not necessarily loose skin. Fat can still cause your skin to hang down.

The benefits of losing the weight far outweigh the negatives that come with loose skin.

i've only lost maybe a third of the weight i need to loose (current goal weight of 190, but its probably more like 175-180 in reality).

i wondered for a while if i'll have loose skin, but i'll find out soon enough when i get down there... no use worrying about it now.

;)

Heidi - If you do not mind me asking, you say you lost this weight, but you did not say how. If there is some good advice in there, toss it out! Or, if it was not the right way to go about things, maybe you could still let us know so we know routines to avoid.

Thanks and congrats on losing again!!

Okay, so it was was least sensible. I think 1200 is a bit low, but 1400-1500 if eating the right things is sensible and smart. That is what I am doing, but after a surgery, it is slow to working out again. I was pleased that today was the first day in 2 weeks I could get back to my yoga! Slowly, but steadily. =) Thanks for sharing!!

@JuniperLee,

Congrats on deciding to get healthier and lose weight. I lost 70 lbs over a 7 month period. I have a little loose skin, but since I also workout in addition to dieting correctly, I've also reshaped my body as well. I used to be concerned about loose skin, but being lean, being healthy and looking great is where my focus is at, so concerns about loose skin fall to the way side so to speak. Here's to your progress!

It took me almost two years to loose 75 lbs... No loose skin yet. I hear the slower the better...I still have around 25 to go though so it could change. If I do have any loose skin I'll get it removed. I knew that it was an option before I decided to loose the weight. I have also been obese basically forever so theres a chance that I will have issues when I get to my goal weight. I'd rather deal with loose skin. That's more hideable than carrying around an 100 extra lbs.
