To much gym work?

Heya Folks!

Just a quick post for a bit of advice. I've been in the gym every day for the last 7 days (well today makes it 7 days). I've had a few people telling me that I should not be doing this and I should take a break.

Currently, I class my gym sessions as "light". They only consist of a warm up, and then a run on the machine for 30min (usually around 5.5k in distance). Surely its not unhelathy to do this every day?

I work as an IT trainer, so almost every day I am sitting at a desk, or standing around teaching people, its hardly physical work.

I think the run only really makes up for the lack of physical work that get in my job. If I was a manual worker, then fair enough, because they would be walking around, carrying things etc, then working out on top of that.

Anyway, the question is, should I be only running a few times a day, or am I ok to run these short runs every day?

I walk at least 3 -5 miles every day -and so weights 4 times a week - Running is much more abusive to the joints than walking is but you're not doing it to excess... as long as you're feeling ok - then I don't think there's anything wrong with it - though you might want to give your body a break at least one day -7 days is a lot and tough to keep up with long term...

I would definitely add some strength training into your routine -

Wow you have been to the gym seven days a weeks. That is really great. I don't think that it is unhealthy at all as long as you don't overdo and enjoy your time there. You said said you do hardly physical work. So the time at the gym is a nice balance to your working situation!

You're absolutely fine with this. This comes more into play once you start, if ever, lifting weights.

Or if you start really breaking into some intensive cardio/endurance/sprint work.

Perfect. Thanks guys. Its good to know I can come here and get some advice, rather than settle with some hearsay from the guys in work.

Great work!

I think it's great you're getting to the gym every day!

I think some sort of workout/exercise every day really helps keep your body on track and your health moving towards the positive direction. So long as you're not bashing the same muscle day after day (ie, work out different aspects of your body on different days), you should have no problems at all.

I do 2 days of weight lifting, 2 days of cardio, and 3 days of everything else (bodyweight exercises, walking, karate, etc.). So far, my body has been responding quite happily.....

Data points,

Barbara

It doesn't seem that your workout is intense, so you're fine. The problem with going to the gym everyday (at least with me) is that you burn out after a while.

Burn out in what sense?

For me, burning out means I'm fried, in terms of overreaching in relation to my neuromusclular system. Strength starts to decline and whatnot.

Or do you mean bored of the monotony?

I meant the latter. I personally cannot go to the gym everyday to do the same thing over and over. Instead, I try to dedicate at least a day or two to playing team-sports and another for weight-lifting only.

Ya once people have rep powers as huge as yours, it shoots everyone else up real quick. Its funny because there are a lot of users here with maxed out rep bars and thousands of rep power. Yet over at WF the most rep power is like 140. Difference between girls and guys? Though we do have girls there :D
