To eat or not to eat before cardio ??

sup all !!

i need your opinion on that ... I usually do 70 minutes of cardio !!! and heard people say that it is better to do it on a empty stomach so it will use fat cell for energy while other said the complete opposite !! which one should I go for ??

I have tried both ... and I must say that when riding on a empty stomach I sometimes feel muscle cramps(and I always stretch before riding) ... but besides that its all the same for me !!!

what you guys think ??

thanks all and have good weekend !!

I would eat. I never like exercising on an empty stomach.

Why are you doing so much cardio?

Eating is good, but you've got to watch what you eat. Don't eat alot, and make sure it's complex carbs, preferably with some protein. Biggest thing to remember is to stay away from the simple sugars. Alot of people think they ought to chug a gatorade at this time, but this is horrible. What happens is that a flood of simple sugars will make your body release a flood of insulin to cover it. Unfortunately insulin blocks off access to your fat reserves, so basically you have to burn up most everything that's in your blood stream before you can burn anything from fat, and the worst part about this is that there's a switchover period, as you can't immediately go from fueling off of carbs to fueling off of fat. Basically you'll feel great... until you burn up all these carbs, but then you'll bottom out, and while your body is switching energy sources, you will absolutely feel like crap and have very poor results. This is what people are talking about when they describe a "sugar high and crash". This is also why many marathon runners just forget the pre-race meal altogether and just carbo-load the night before. That way they can be fueling off of fat from the get-go and bypass that switchover period. If you do eat, just make sure you don't spike your blood sugar so that you can avoid these bad side effects.

thanks for the reply ...

well i like to cycle a lot ... and I usually like to ride 22-25 miles which is usually 70to 80 minutes, also to shed some body fat ... wanna go single digits !

so it normal !

thanks a lot for the reply corndog, I always drink water so I guess im good ...

also the type of food I would usually eat before cycling is turkey on whole wheat .. that should be ok right ?

also one last this that might be off topic but here it goes .. I just bought a heart monitor and was wondering what is the range of bpm that the body starts using fat as energy ... I heard people saying 80% or more but also saw other saying 65% is fine ... which one is true ?? because it is impossible to go 80% for a very long time !

thanks !

bpm that the body starts using fat as energy

When I am in the "fat burn zone" on the elliptical machine I feel like I am just coasting along and not working hard enough. I understand the premise of fat burn vs cardio when it comes to heart rate but still I feel like I am not working hard enough when I am in fat burn zone.

Some of us have tried to explain this multiple times. If you would do a search, there are some pretty good explanations about this. No real point in repeating it.
