time hampering growth?

Hi, ive been reading lots of stuff on the net about how if you spend too long in the gym it can hamper your growth.

What are you opinions on the max amount of time you should spend in the gym lifting weights (incl. warm up and cool down)??

Thanks

Well, it's really meant toward time hitting the weights.

However, there is the psychological factor of getting bored from spending too much time in a gym.

I'm in the gym for 1.5 - 2 hours, but I'm probably lifting for 40-60 mins.

This is referring to cardio. If you are running for too long (+20mins) you will have used up all the fuel in ur blood. so your body starts to break down the muscle fibers to use as fuel. This is why serious weight trainers stick to high intensity interval training. If you dont know what this is search HITT.

I spend about 5mins lifting, the rest of my hour weight training is spent resting between sets and exercises. I dont do any cardio in the gym apart from a 5min up hill walk. I do my cardio at home skipping or outside running cos its not worth going to the gym for just 20mins.

No no, it also refers to lifting and the build up of cortizol and edecrine(sp?). Bip would know the details, but suffice it to say, too much cardio or too much lifting can hamper growth.

being a noob i didnt think he would be doing that kind of research, but yeah.
maybe I could translate that in to,
"yes too much time in the gym can hamper your growth":p

Yeah, when going into any new field, there's a xlation problem. It's better when they can come up with analogies for us "I just wanna get big and strong" guys.:)

If you are training intensly you should not be able to (or at least not without pucking or passing out) lift any more than about 40-60 minutes, depending on your rest periods. If you are pumping iron more than 60 minutes, you are NOT training intensly enough.

after you run out of glycogen the body releases cortisol that uses muscle as energy..normaly 45mins to an hour...the more trained you are the longer you can spend in the gym..but an hour should be enough if not your not training hard enough.
here is some info on cortisol.

The main points here are:

1. too much cardio can burn muscle
2. too much time lifting means you're either over training, or not high intensity...neither give good results
3. post workout nutrition is important for stopping cortisol release, replenishing glycogen, and getting protein back to the muscles so recovery can begin.
