THREE SIMPLE STEPS TO WEIGHT LOSS OVER 40

1) FLUSH FALSE FAT BY BANISHING WHEAT

One of the most common food allergies and the one most likely to cause false fat in many women is wheat. Wheat contains a protein called gluten, which is difficult for the body to break down and digest, says Dr. Lark. Wheat allergies can trigger fatigue, depression, bloating and intestinal gas. Try substituting breads made with rice, millets, soy, or oats. Check labels on crackers and look for those made with rice or potatoes. Millet flour or rice flour are suitable alternatives that you can find in healthy food stores or in healthy food aisle in your supermarket. This one simple step may be the only trick you need to help you digest food more easily instead of letting it sit in your gut and destroy you digestive system and your waistline! The best news is that you don’t have to count calories or run a marathon to get slimmer and trimmer—you just need to eliminate one food that can trigger inflammation and cause false fat.

2) CONTROL YOUR APPETITE WITH FLAXSEED

There’s a safe and very healthy way to curb insatiable cravings, says DR. Lark, a long time advocated of the health benefits of flaxseed. She explains that it’s the ideal food for women’s weight loss because it contains healthy, appetite suppressing fat along with the bulk of fiber to help you feel full longer. Flaxseed is chock full of omega-3 fatty acids (the heart healthy kind) and fiber. According to Dr. Lark, it packs a one-two punch. “I’m such a fan of flaxseed that if I were stranded on an island and had to choose one food to survive on, I’d choose flaxseed,” she says. The essential oils in flaxseed are great for heart health, appetite control, and do wonders for your skin. “Fat plays an important role in weight loss,” she says. “It provides slow-burning calories for energy and to stay satisfied for longer periods of time. It also helps maintain normal brain function which may improve your emotional well-being—a big plus when trying to lose weight.” Fiber is essential when trying to shed pounds. It increases bulk and helps reduce your appetite. Fiber is digested slowly in the body, releasing just enough carbohydrates into the bloodstream to keep your energy level consistently high. Of course, getting enough fiber also helps digestion and supports good colon function so that you eliminate wastes that are released during weight loss. Dr. Lark adds that flushing mechanism is especially important for women because it removes excess fluids and estrogens, a hormone linked to fatty deposits. For those not familiar with these inexpensive but powerfully potent seeds, they resemble small sesame seeds and are available in supermarkets and health food stores. Dr. Lark advices buying flaxseed that has been milled or ground to reap its benefits. Start slowly, beginning with one tablespoon daily and work up to a tolerable amount for your body. Two to four tablespoons sprinkled daily over cereal, yogurt, pasta, salads, or shakes, is your goal.

3) REV UP YOUR METABLOISM

Once you’ve flushed out the false fats, it’s time to burn fat and calories more efficiently. The secret ingredient in this step is green tea. This powerful disease fighter is rich in antioxidants and can also help you peel off unwanted pounds. “Green tea contains compounds called catechins,” Dr. Lark, author of the 21-Day Weight Loss Program Report, says. “These catechins protect special brain chemicals related to metabolism. The higher the levels of these brain chemicals – which include dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine – the more efficiently you’ll burn calories” Drink at least three 8-ounce cups of green tea daily to reap the greatest benefits, says Dr. Lark. If you don’t drink tea, you can take 300 milligrams to 400 milligrams of green tea extracts, which contains caffeine, or 100 milligrams of green tea catechins that do not. “These three simple steps can help you beat the battle of the over-40 bulge,” Says Dr. Lark. “The added benefits of their healthful properties will make you feel as good as you look.”

I don't like that report at all...

If you don't digest gluten well, then don't eat it. If you do, then there is no reason to nix it from the diet. "false fat"?

Ehh, some things I don't like in this. But, nothing I feel like going on about...

Green tea has been shown in a large number of studies. To only increase metabolic rate by around 1-3%. Most "good" studies on it show about 1% increase...Wow, one full percent!

None of these are great "weight loss tips", imo..

Where did you get this article from?

I'm over 40 -

what works for over 40 is what works for under 40 - age is irrelevant...

flaxseed is pretty icky - i prefer to get my omega 3 from a nice piece of grilled salmon...

oui, I read and typed all of it, I went to there site to get the article but they dont post them from the magazines. ug, so the entire time i was thinking, "yay, I am gonna giv em a great article to read," I was slightly edged about it though, because this forum is SOLID when it comes to information, I also agree mal, why they would put 'over 40' only when it could aply to all ages. Anyhow, I think I'll think before hand. lol.

I'm over 40 too!

Morning,

I'm over 40 too! Here's my input for weight loss tips:

1.) Remember you're no longer 20.

Heck, that's points number two and three! :) Ie, what you could do with the greatest of ease 20 years ago, probably will take a weeeeeeeee bit more effort today. Don't get discouraged! Just because you were able to perform 60 minutes of intense marching band routines in 95 degree heat on the field 'way back when doesn't mean you can do 60 minutes of pure cardio in a luxurious air conditioned room from the get go today.

4.) Give yourself permission to acknowledge, weight might come off slower than it did 20 years ago. What might have melted off pounds with the greatest of ease during your college years might run as fast as a motionless snail today! Okay, perhaps a bit faster. But the point remains (and Steve/Mal/Leigh/etc., correct me if I'm wrong), your metabolism changes as you get older. Your body might require more time/energy output to achieve the same results today as you did 20 years ago.

5.) Welcome helpful input from young whipper-snappers. If you're at the gym and a 20-something person wants to help you (and is sincere/not hitting on you/etc.), graciously accept the assistance. Heck, my karate instructors are all 'way younger than me but I could spend years learning from them. An older age doesn't mean you cannot learn from younger folk.

6.) Listen to your body! (this probably goes for all ages). At 40 and above, ideally you should be blessed with the wisdom of Buddha and the patience of glaciers. If your body says, hmmmm, I'm going to indulge in the 24 hour cold and knock you senseless, don't say, ho ho hoho, I'm going to still go to the gym and workout until collapse! In other words, if you overdo it one day, change your workout the next to take that into account.

7.) Don't assume anything is too hard to try. Thinking about getting fit from weight lifting or aerobics class or martial arts or what have you? Don't get intimidated if all the participants are 20 years younger or if the workouts are intense. If they're intense, lessen them up for your own abilities (ie, if everyone else is high kicking, you can simply lift your knees or your toes etc.). Give yourself time to come up to speed.

There's probably more I can come up with, but as I'm still very much under the weather, I'll stop here.

Enjoy,

Barbara

Menopause might have some effect, as those hormonal fluctuactions can play havoc with the body, but I'm not there yet, but aside from that - for me it's more mindset than it is anything else -and if your mind is in the right place then age isn't a factor...

I was more flexible when I was 15 years younger... and I creaked a whole lot less than I do now, but with age comes a certain amount of stubbornness that overrules the body when it says stop...

So while I'd like to believe that it's more difficult losing weight over 40 - because I am, and I'd like to believe that I'm special - not ride the short bus special but special :D, the reality is - I'm not - and if the head goes in the right direction - the body will follow - no matter what the age...
