Thoughts on a personal trainer?

Right now, I'm pretty happy with my progress, both in terms of weight loss and increased general fitness. I've been focusing mainly on bicycling and getting comfortable with my diet. Now I'm looking ahead at the calendar to start planning around obstacles.

Today was my last long ride until after Thanksgiving. My schedule doesn't work for Thursdays, and then my daughter has minimum days and holidays up until the 28th. It's only a week and a half, and I'm going to see if I can make it to the morning aqua-fit classes on her minimum days (the scheduling is -really- tight, but I think if I push I can make it work.) I can squeeze in some tactical rides in the mornings too, if aqua-fit doesn't happen.

It's the end of December/January I'm concerned about. My extended family will be here for a week, then I'll be on vacation for a week, then there will be a week school is out. I'll have three continuous weeks of schedule disruption.

January is the coldest, darkest part of the year here, and I'll be completely out of familiarity with the good feeling hard exercise leaves me with. I don't have a gym that's close enough to me to use regularly, but I do have a personal training group that's two blocks away.

I've never done personal training before. How does it work? Is a single half-hour session a week "enough"? Should I plan/budget for two a week? Are they likely to give me exercises to do at home, or just there with their equipment? Is personal training effective as a "kick in the pants" to get you back to a normal exercise routine, or should I consider it more of a strength-building supplement?

The number of sessions with a personal trainer that you do per week really depends on how 'on track' you stay for the days when you're not with a trainer. Often, I'll start off seeing someone 2-3 times per week, then gradually taper off to once per week or once every 2 weeks. Sometimes, it goes the other way around, where I'll see someone once per week, see if they stay consistent on their own, then add more days if necessary. I would say try once per week, then if you need more, add more :)
