Do you think it has more to do with the excercise or the eating??

That's a really difficult question to answer in one word. To narrow it down to a one word answer, I'd have to say: Mindset.

In fairness to your question specifically, I would give the edge to the diet and here's why:

I started off on day one at 1500 calories which was a deficit of 2000 to 5000 calories a day to my normal obesity-driven lifestyle. I literally felt results within the first 48 hours though this was probably nothing more than stomach-shrinking and a bit of water weight loss. Remember, I could only exercise 10 minutes my first day out so I doubt I had much in the way of affect from such a short workout.

To surmise, a mere deficit of consumption should equate a weight loss without exercise. The most obvious cases would be the mega-obese (1000 pounders and the like) that can not exercise at all and lose weight.

I'll even add that what you eat while monitoring a set calorie diet (1200 to 1500 a day) is just as important as the numerical intake level as well.

You could literally pick any value meal at (pick your favorite fast food place) and get the large size (not super size) and eat one everyday, still be well under your 1500 cals a day but I doubt you'll lose weight doing this method especially if you go home and do the couch potato thing. You would still have to work like hell to burn off all the high fat and big carbs.

I think my results have florished from my food selections largely.

To format matters of importance in a weight loss structure:

Mindset:
Any good building needs a strong foundation. Your mind is the building blocks in lifestyle change. It HAS to support what you're about to build. If a weak foundation crumbles under the weight of what your about to place on it, then everything is lost.

Diet: Once your mindset (foundation) is in place, it's time to put up the walls. The diet is the architecture. It's by your design. You make it look pretty or basic if you like, you can built it fast or slow just as long as you know what the blueprints look like. Knowing how to draw the blueprints is as important as the forevision of the finished product.

Exercise: This is the roof of lifestyle change. This protects your building. It keeps all the bad elements away from all the effort you put into your building. You might make mistakes in your building but the extra protection of exercise will help keep you stable until you can go back and fix the mistakes. Any roof shores up the walls and strengthens the whole building. It's really a complete part of the lifestyle building.

That should be the forward in the manual.

You really are amazing!! I love that you put Mindset first! I think that has been the difference with me and this diet/lifestyle. I am not going to fail. I have the support system in place and I know that it's worth it all. I made up MY mind, not someone else for me. Brilliant! I guess I'm working on the roof right now. I have a good diet in place and I know that whether I work out or not... i'm not failing. Working out is definately a perk, and I've been reading and learning that if I work out more, then I just reap the benefits by bumping up my metabolism and letting my muscles burn the fat. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I think you are definately keeping me motivated!

Me too...I don't know what it is, but my mind is made up this time. I feel different about this committment; it's not like the last (and only) time I've tried this before. Of course, all of you are helping too, with the support and being role models and such:D So, thank you!

Nice one T2!

Down Time

"Say it ain't so Joe"

Oh, it be so. Even a warrior has to regroup and prepare for the next onslaught.

Truth be known I've been walking with a heel that is bruised or has a 'pointer' or whatever it is, it just won't heal. It's finally at the point where I know I'm only making it worse with my daily walks and not mention I've made a big increase in my distance, the timing has been all wrong.

It started in July and I passed it off that new sneakers were needed but to no avail, the new footwear wasn't the cure and the bruise just got deeper and more inflamed, The odd part is about 5 minutes into the walk, the pain is gone and can endure all the punishment I dish out on it. Pretty much afterwards, it's pretty painful all day *shrugs*

I blew off walking yesterday and have no plans for walking today and tomorrow. I may take all week off - I dunno... The weather turned to shit here and looks to be for a few days anyway so we'll just rest up and try some healing for awhile. It's not like I can't trust in my diet to compensate my walking absence for a few days *does my best Alfred E Newman "what, me worry?" look*

September is the month of months. I will need this break getting ready for this. more about that later...

Maybe with my break time I can FINALLY finish part 3 - gawd I'm a lazy person :) at times.

Maybe you have heel spurs. *ouch*

What is part 3 and where are parts 1 and 2 so I can know what's going on? :)

You've intrigued me with your 'September is the month' statement. *wonders*

Hey T2 :)
I'm slowly returning to the world of diaries again, and yours is the first place I've ventured!

Your during picture is phenomenal! You're doing a great job :) Knowing where you were in managing your diabetes compared to where you are now is a clear testiment that YOU have taken control of your life. That is such a HUGE accomplishment!

As for part 3 and being lazy, it's not an issue of laziness...it's timing, it's inspiration to write, it might be a lot of things, but I doubt it's laziness.

Your foot - is the pain at the bottom of your heel or the edge of your heel?
If you can't walk, you can do timed resistance training or strength building/toning while off your feet. As much as I love walking, it's not the be all end all ;) Do you have a place to swim? That's another great option that can work your whole body and take the pressure off joints & feet.

In regards to losing without the exercise, well, you hit the nail on the head, mindset & diet come 1st & 2nd to exercise. We can only do what we're physically able to do, and to continue to walk when injured, you'll make the recuperation period longer.

Ahh yes I have heel spurs myself - its why i stick to biking and cross trainers. Funnily enough the cure is to weigh less and give it a break for a few months :D
I got heel spurs before i started, but they are increasingly getting better and better.

Welcome back Deb !! and congrats on what's going in your diary. I'm carefully following your progress on endurance walking. I'm very intrigued by this.

Nothing but Thank Yous, what more can I say. I would've thought the last 60 would've been much easier than the last 110 or so (actually I have no idea what I weight right now and I kinda like it that way - 240's might be possible) but it's turned out to be the bigger of the challenge. I'm up for it, just rethinking differently right now about how I approach it. I think the mental planning is a great challenge for me.

As for part 3 and being lazy, it's not an issue of laziness...it's timing, it's inspiration to write, it might be a lot of things, but I doubt it's laziness.

I will give ya a nod on the inspiration part - it really hasn't been coming to me lately but I'm sure I could try just a lil harder *chuckles* It's funny how so many other things are occupying my life right now, another testament how more doors open when the weight comes off.

Your foot - is the pain at the bottom of your heel or the edge of your heel?

Bottom center going towards the arch. It just feels like a deep bruise with no visible redness or marks of any kind. My feet are in terrific shape otherwise, especially for a diabetic's feet. I no longer have dead skin build-up and discolored toenails consistent with obese/diabetes.

In theory, my walking is probably doing from all the tight turns I make on the deck (250-500 turns a day in a 8 foot radius) and the heel inflamed is outside foot that takes the brunt of the weight during the turns. I may try reversing my laps and trade up with the other foot on the outside and see if it's where I walk that is causing me grief.

I know one thing, I'm going completely nuts without my walks !!

If you can't walk, you can do timed resistance training or strength building/toning while off your feet. As much as I love walking, it's not the be all end all ;) Do you have a place to swim? That's another great option that can work your whole body and take the pressure off joints & feet.

I did counter-top push ups over the weekend and I use 1 gallon water jugs (8 lbs @) for reps in various different positions, but I really need my walking back, I'm not really into this kind of exercise. I find it boring and more like I 'have to' do it than just going out and enjoying it.

It's kinda silly for me to think I need to 'enjoy' doing an exercise but I've grown so accustom to what's got me here thus far and it's really hard to give up what I know works for me.

In regards to losing without the exercise, well, you hit the nail on the head, mindset & diet come 1st & 2nd to exercise. We can only do what we're physically able to do, and to continue to walk when injured, you'll make the recuperation period longer.

I agree, but somehow I see me walking tonight. I just can't help myself. I guess that's the downside of my mindset - knowing I can and have been working through the pain and will probably continue to do so even if it's not the smart thing to do.

Hi T2 (part 3), hope you have (part3) been doing well. Sounds like (part 3) you had a great time at your brother's b-day (part 3) and the pictures are a testament to your hard work. Congrat(part3)ulations.

Is my subliminal messaging working?
