This should work, yeah?

Hi there. new member from california. 27 y/o male 5'11, 285 lbs (180cm ,130kg). Hoping to lose at least 50 lbs by the start of next year. Maybe like 80-100 lbs overall. Recently found myself with all the motivation in the world to start losing weight (my name should tell u why), so here i am. Been walking every night for about 2 weeks now. It was tough at first, id get out-of-breath pretty quick. But now im to the point where i can briskly walk two miles without getting sore or gasping for air too bad, lol

Also been counting calories, and trying to eat more often. Overeating was never an issue for me, i just always ate bad foods and never exercised. Im eating 4 small meals a day, trying never to go more than 4 hours without eating. And with pretty small meals im ranging from 1200-2000 calories a day. I havent weighed myself yet, but based on the fact that i havent had to tighten my belt or anything, im kind of afraid to weigh in. But i mean, walking a lot and taking less than 2000 calories a day HAS to result in weight loss, right?

Im pretty new to all of this, so any advice or criticisms would be appreciated

Your plan sounds good..Can you give us an example of a typical days food? I'd recommend weighing in weekly and logging your food and exercise everyday. This is a link to the diary section of the forum: http://weight-loss.fitness.com/f/9/weight-loss-diary Loads of people go there to start their own thread that they post photos/food logs/exercise/weigh-ins/questions etc :)

^ thanks for the info, i'll check out the diaries

As far as what i eat, ive made pretty good progress. Ive adapted to the smaller meals pretty well. It kind of amazes me what fills me up now. Finding difficulty eating the right things though. Im too busy to cook more than about 3 dinners a week, so fast food still comes into play. The majority of which is bean and cheese burritos, i love those! The big one at Del Taco is 440 calories, and quite filling. When i do cook, its turkey or chicken, and i try to add a vegetable side, but im struggling with that - not a fan of most veggies

Im drinking pretty much just water, with the occasional diet soda. Ive almost completely cut out fried foods (something that made up way too large a chunk of my diet before) Never had much of a sweet-tooth so thats not a problem, only sweets i eat are granola bars (usually before i exercise). Hmm, what else can i do to speed the process up? Could my deficient veggie-intake end up screwing me?

First of all, weight loss doesn't happen overnight. It's a lengthy process, and I've heard arguments that losing more than 2 lbs a week isn't good for you.

You should definitely find a way to fit vegetables into your diet. Veggies and Fruit are never bad to add as a side. Fruit makes a very good snack in comparison to things like cookies/chips. I also enjoy snacking on carrots with a ranch dip (I still calculate how much the ranch dip (sour cream+ranch seasoning) is going into my calorie count).

Personally, I weigh myself everyday, but mainly the reason you shouldn't do that is to not discourage yourself. I have a scale that weighs to the .2, so I see small differences each day. Just remember when you finally do weigh yourself that you aren't going to magically drop 25 lbs in a week.

If you're going to end up with fast food, do some research on what actually is going into the food other than calories. Is it loaded with sodium? Calorie counting is a big part, but you also don't want unhealthy levels of sodium, etc. If possible, find quick meals that aren't fast food, such as a frozen smart ones meal. Also, salads can generally be quick and are good for you as long as you don't bathe it in dressing.

UPDATE

So ive still stuck to my plan of slightly smarter eating choices and walking 5 nights a week for a lil over 4 months now. Im right on schedule, down about 40 lbs. Im pretty happy with it. Its not as 'night and day' as id hoped, but quite noticeable. Im wearing old-ass clothes ive had since high school that have NEVER fit, lol. Had to buy a couple new belts cuz i ran outta notches

Still find myself with plenty of motivation to keep going, so no end in sight!
