Exercise
5:30 53 minute walk. (300 cal)

That walk was so nice. I went in my work clothes, so I didn't have that last little hurdle to slow me down, and it has been so long since I even walked at that time of evening that I had forgotten that the disappearing light could be an issue as I left. I just shut the front door behind me feeling I was released. That kind of walking really lacks intensity and I want other sorts of exercise as well, but I really love to just be outside, and have my mind to myself. I made sure I got up the top of my little hill while there was still some light and I was rewarded with the silhouettes of leaves and branches against the last orange glow of the sunset. I turned to head back expecting darkness, and instead the sky was full of purples, and a giant moon was backlighting the trees. I really love having my exercise and relaxation come together.

Oooo lovely!! I feel the same!! Sometimes if you are just powering along, thinking only about getting your heart rate up and burning calories, you can miss so much!! Sometimes you just got to meander along for a while :)

Yes. :) I do have to turn my mind back to the speed sometimes but I was needing to refresh myself mentally and a good walk seems to automatically ensure this. I woke up feeling heaps more cheerful this morning. :)

Hi, Felici. Sounds like a beautiful night to walk in. Have a wonderful weekend!
It was wonderful - especially as I haven't been walking much lately. I'm looking forward to the weekend - no early rush to netball on Saturday, a big walking trek in the hills, (according to my husband who's organizing it) on Sunday and a public holiday on Monday. :)

Great comment about walking as exercise! :)

Walking outside is just so valuable. I feel that it looks after me in all sorts of ways at once. My husband has been coming home early and walking the dog lately so I've taken the opportunity to try and exercise in other ways. I didn't realize how I had missed walking until I got back out there.

As I left later, I hurried the walk tonight. Well actually I just walked fairly fast and then added in stretches of jogging. I sometimes really want to do that, and think to myself that if I don't do it too often it will be worth the temporary sore knees afterwards. Now the walk is over and I just have the sore knee I'm not so sure about that, but unless I find out that it causes permanent damage (as well it might), I expect I will relapse again some time in the future. I guess it's a little silly as far as the physical goes, because if there is any physical gain it's certainly not worth the downside. It was another night of looking at the sky most of the way though and lovely for that.

Today, I agreed to go out to an expensive dinner in a week and a half, to support the hospitality training my niece is doing. I expect it will be fun, but I was thinking the food would probably be wasted. Then I realized I have been hanging out to excuse myself a break in my usual foods and that this will probably fit the bill, so I am now actually looking forward to that aspect of it. This is quite a change from the uncertainty I felt a few months ago about eating changes away from home. I really don't enjoy some higher fat foods as much now as I did, but I think I will just eat what appeals to me.

Sore knees after jogging = bad shoes. The same shoes aren't always good for both walking and jogging. When the shoe doesn't give the soles of your feet the correct support (what you need varies from one person to another), your knees may twist a bit on a bad direction with every step, causing soreness. Walking has your feet and legs in a different position, so this doesn't occur. Also, strengthening the muscles around your knees may help this problem.
I used to get my knees sore from jogging. Now I don't, got good shoes and the muscles are in better condition as well. So maybe you don't have to give the jogging up? I hope so.. :)

Hey, just stopping by. I think you're definitely growing and I mean that in a good way :). Enjoy your fancy dinner.

:D I like that "good way". Thanks Cannon. I have a way to go - but I think you're right. :)

That's quite an idea Juliette. I do wear really crappy old trainers. I did have one knee X-rayed and I know it was showing signs of degeneration at that time. I've been thinking it was time to get new shoes soon regardless (might be hard to fit in this weekend...) but I hadn't considered they might enable me to do more. I'll keep my fingers crossed. :D

I weighed myself and I am down to 76.9 kg. Down 1.2 kg since last week which is nice. Probably I will have little or none next week after that, but I will celebrate anyway. I am now half way to the goal I wrote in my signature. :)

Congratulations on the all the kilos lost and REACHING THE HALFWAY!!!
Celebrate well and have a great weekend! :D
Julie

Thank you Juliette!!

There are 2-3 brands and I can buy single serves that are easy to carry and reheat. I've been getting Campbell's from Coles, but I don't know that it will help you much to know that. :) For sure home made would be better in most ways. It's very much a convenience thing for me, just a way to have warm food and add to my veges, though the soup's have a little carbs in them too. As they're prepackaged I expect there are some less healthy things included too.

I dont even think Ive ever even seen Pumpkin soup let alone Campbell's LOL...I like the convience of tim soup myself....especially the ready to eat stuff - it cant get easier than that

I love the convenience of the single serve tins of soup too. :)

Actually I haven't walked as much recently (until today), as I was a little while ago, but I appreciate that it is a lot easier to manage now that the weather is cooler.

Sleep.... an underrated pleasure. I'm so inclined to skimp and yet I swear I feel a good 15 kilos lighter when I'm not missing any. :)

Exercise
3 hour walk up, along, down hills, through scrub, etc. Probably 800 calories.

That was a great walk. I went with my husband, daughter, my husband's sister, her partner and her daughter. Our walk started with a half hour straight up a hill, with no path through the scrub, then a climb up some rocks, partly on hands on knees, another patch of barely penetrable prickle bushes and we came out onto the Bibbulman track, on a ridge. That was truly lovely with massive views all around us. We even saw a pair of massive wedge tailed eagles soaring on the thermals at our level and diving down to the bush at the base of the ridge. After a while, walking along the ridge, we lunched, then stayed on the track a while longer before coming gradually down and walking back to the car along a gravel road. It was a bit of a stretch for most of us, but also very enjoyable. I didn't keep up with my husband. He was always in front - it was his walk, that he used to do years ago - the patches of barely penetrable prickle bush are one of his specialities. I was always at the end of the line, but that was as much due to not wanting anyone else to be there, as anything else. Still the first climb was a challenge and made me aware that I have a way to go before I'm in the kind of trim I'd really like.

At half way to my goal, I'm happy that I can actually fit into ordinary jeans. I hadn't bought any for quite a few years, until yesterday. No one else wore jeans today, but to me they were mandatory for the weather and the scrub. I'm less happy that I could actually fit into Levi's with no baggy section at the waist, whereas I always used to need to cinch that in. I also was glad that the jeans acted like a girdle up to my waist, and that I have a nice flat section of ribs in front, but less happy about the soft, round, jiggly, little section in between. It is a commonplace now for people to greet me with comments about how well I have done losing weight and talk about what I've done to lose it and how great I look. I love that. However the fact that I am only half way to the upper edge of a normal BMI, is telling me that the "great" is a special kind of "compared-to-before great"! Realistically the difference in appearance between a normal BMI and now must be a lot more than the difference between now and where I started.

I have the slower section still to come. I don't know if it's true to say it's the more difficult section - I think getting started and learning how to make things work at all is a very challenging time in weight loss. However I see that getting through to a goal weight often seems to be very tricky too. I hope I can keep going without it becoming too stressful, but I can already do a lot now that I wanted when I started this process. I don't know if there is a lot of that sort of reward still to come. I want to be much thinner than I am because I do want the health benefits of that loss, though they might not be things I feel day to day. I did get a bit breathless on that hill climb today though - so there is certainly room for improvement with that sort of thing. Regardless of how long the rest of the loss takes, I do feel very confident about not regaining the weight or limitations I have lost.

I had great end of the day today. I ate dinner, sat down (if you can call a recliner chair a seat :)), ready to watch 2 hours of my favourite TV with no bodyweight exercises or jogging for once, and fell asleep for an hour and a half. My daughter thought I would be sorry I'd missed it, but I was just glad to be able to sleep when I felt like it. :)

Hi Felici, sounds like a great hike. I wish I could hike with my wife, but she has a bad knee, and can't go down hills worth beans. That scrub brush sounds like real fun! NOT.

I know what you mean about sleep. I'm a very light sleeper, and often wake up in the middle of the night for a couple of hours.

I think we're both approaching the 2nd half of our journey with a bit of trepidation. You're right of course - learning how to do it in the first place is often the toughest part, but I know there will be some difficult times ahead for both of us.

But we'll get through them, I'm confident of that.

Thanks , Tom. It is a pity you can't share that kind of outdoor walk with your wife - well a pity about the fun parts. However, as I have noticed that you regularly, frequently burn more calories in an hour than I did on the walk, I won't fear that the lack of hill walks is a problem for your weight loss!

This second half will be interesting. I do feel confident that we will both get where we're headed. I imagine I might need to make some adjustments along that way but that's ok too.

Another really nice mental health break type walk, sun dews in flower, the sun on my back and breeze on my face - what more could you ask for?

Well a bit of effort maybe? :) That will have to come tomorrow. Once I was home I finished a couple of chores and fell asleep again!! A great catch up weekend for me.

Sounds like you're doing very well with the walking, hon! I thought about going outside for a walk, but it was 111F yesterday here and it's just too hot to be out for long. I do think I'll head to the gym this morning, though.

Keep up the fantastic work!

Thanks, tx.

Oooer. 111F is NOT walk time!! Gym time, swim time, if you're lucky, evening walks maybe... not at 111F though. Good on you for still feeling ready to be active with that outside! :)
