ok i know there isnt a speed muscle, but what muscle could i work out to make my speed go up the most? i know probably sprints and practice at it would be best, but on crappy days outside, i would think the back of my thighs.
Yes those are called your hamstrings and your butt muscles are your glutes. They provide a lot of power when running. You can work them out with exercises like squats.
There is no single muscle that will provide everything for you, the best thing to do is create a strong balance in your body for the best results.
Speed is leg's, or lower body. The way to improve it so I've heard is to do jog, and then when you feel tired, sprint your arse off, then jog again, then sprint again, all nonstop. Good luck.
A muscle can only move as fast as the opposite or counter acting muscle is strong. Meaning, your tricep can't extend so fast that it hyperextends because your biceps is weak. By making your bicep stronger your tricep will be able to extend faster.
Learn how to do "pistols" the one legged rock bottom squat and kettlbell swings. You don't need a kettlebell, but i can't think of any two exercises which will make you run faster. All you need is probably a 30-40 lbs dumbell.
I believe it's the quads that are built for speed and your hams for power (it's all in the way the muscle is shaped fiberwise). Squats and single leg squat stuff will give you the most bang for your buck. Some oly lifting would help also.
Those are called pistols? I was aware of them but never really knew the name...they are so hard, I can really only do about 5 in a row, if that. Yeah, my legs need work.
For sprinting it's important to get the ENTIRE body conditioned, but yes mainly the lower body... Just try running with your hands in your back pocket versus pumping w/ your arms... (that's why you need to work the upper body as well.)
Biggest thing is to get your leg up as quick as possible and as back as possible.. (I know you're thinking 'a duh') but like mike100 said it.. need to work the "agonist and antagonist"... Work on your hip flexion (getting your leg up), and your hip extenion (Getting your leg back).
Another big thing is to work your core... because you can have the fastest legs, but as soon as your core quits, you're going to lose a lot of distance/speed. And if you're thinking of ab exercises, that's just PART of the core...
(and yes we do have different muscle fiber types, fast twitch vs slow twitch, but can't control it, so you just have to work with what you got )
there is also med twitch muscle fibers. I was just going to add, that there is different types of running styles. next time try this which is a sprinting method I use, first you stand strait up then lean forward about 45-50 degrees till you start to fall, then just start spirinting. the wind resistence and the forward motion will keep you from falling to the ground, It should feel quite strange at first cause your running while in mid fall, anyway be carfull cause once you start to get tired and loose speed you'll hit the ground. also I position my feet as if Im running on a thin line, my hands are almost all the way extended on the back swing, and swing up with arms bent almost to ear level on the forward part. well just look around for other running styles and instructions. good way to run off them deer in my yard
To gain some serious speed you need to do HEAVY leg work. Such as squats, hack squats, leg press, calf raises, and lunges are also good. Core work will aid you as you go along 2. And you should lookup some good sprinting routines. ...Ricky
