The mind is the enemy

Precisely, LaMa! Once you start having to answer questions or think things through differently it becomes way clearer where your heart is. Thanks, as always, ladies!

Way to go on the decision to sign up for a full. :hurray:

I have been toying with the same idea since I did a slow 13 mile training run a couple months back and have had it on my bucket list for a while.

Thanks K&D! I didn't remember that you enjoyed the long distances, too. Ever do any races? Spring around Boston is a great time for me to train because the Boston Marathon is on April 18 and I happen to live fairly close to part of the course. The marathon is a very big deal, and it's very hard to qualify to run it but there are lots of charity runners who are able to participate in exchange for fundraising. These people have to raise upwards of $4,000! I get inspired every weekend when I see people out running, especially when the snow starts piling up.

Now, one thing to note is that in spite of crazy amounts of cardio, it's not unusual for people to gain weight while training. My focus will have to be on healthy carbs (osts, not beer) and avoiding reward binges for major runs.

Have done a 10-mile and a half in recent years but have yet to step up to anything longer. Realistically I need to drop another 20-40 pounds before considering anything longer than a half. Was at 245lbs for the previous half I completed and don't think I'd want to try to double that distance at the same weight.
Boston would be an amazing race to run. I would need go with the charity option since a BQ time is well outside my current capability.
A little surprising but at the same time easy to believe folks would be able to gain weight while training for Boston. Especially the folks that are close to a normal weight and aren't burning 1200 calories and hour while they're out there pounding the pavement.

Sounds like you know what you want and K&D has already pinned the Bib on you. ;)

K&D, I agree on your distance and weight opinion. I've devised a weekly long run that begins with my starting PR for distance and weight and ends at 26.2 miles at my goal weight. It's been delayed with health issues but I'm hoping it will work.

Oaks if you decide to go the charity route I'll contribute. I don't know that I'd want my first one to be Boston, but we are different persons. I say decide on your goal and go get it!

Sorry for the confusion folks, my first will definitely not be Boston! It's going to be in Maine on May 15th. I just get good energy from watching everyone who IS training for Boston. There are big group runs every weekend for them and it's really fun if I happen to drive by at the right time. I do try to avoid actually running near them, though, I like my piece and quiet. Q, that was really sweet of you to offer to contribute! K&D, your plan sounds like a reasonable one for sure, going all the way will be tough enough as it is so being a little more light on your feet will be great.

Didn't I hear that we should be able to edit our posts? Because I definitely wrote 'piece' instead of 'peace' in my last post and don't see how to fix that.

Update: Oh cruel cruel forum, you gave me the edit option on this post but I don't see it on any of the others!

Ahh, I get it, you can only edit for fifteen minutes after posting. That seems silly, I should be able to fix typos whenever the heck I want.

The only edit for 15 mins option sucks. I'm glad that we helped. I find typing in my diary & getting feedback really helps me clarify things in my head too. I've been doing that for 9 years now. I think if you go ahead with this marathon you are going to have a cheer squad- us! :hurray:

Definitely! We´ll even commiserate when training leaves you sore and frustrated (which I don´t wish on you) sometimes and not say: pfff, shouldn´t do such crazy things then. Well, most of the time ;)

Yeah, the inability to edit after 15 minutes is a pain. I had been using my first post to track my weekly weigh ins but now it looks like I'll have to do that outside the site.
So does the Maine marathon sell out every year or do you have a bit of time left to make the final decision (or have you already signed up?)

I ended up signing up yesterday! Ack! I would have had a little more time to decide (it sold out in March last year, I think) but I was excited. Ten mile run on the schedule for this weekend. This could be the last weekend that's not hindered by snow, so I gotta make it a good one.

I look forward to both the cheers and the "you brought this on yourself" comments from you guys!

Way to take the plunge! Look forward to seeing the training updates on a regular basis and enjoy the snow free long run. Any indoor tracks close to you to help get through the rest of the winter?

Yay for decision time! Much better than going back and forth without end. Now you have some REAL motivation to stick to your schedule :)

Just re-read the earliest part of my thread. Here's part of a post I made back in October of 2014 -

Number one goal: run more. I participated in a half marathon earlier this month. Super flat, I finished in 2:30. I love running, once I'm out there doing it. Getting out there is tough, and training for this month's race was nearly nonexistent. I let myself focus on my friends' running paces, which is silly and unnecessarily discouraging. But I'm planning for a few shorter races in November, and need to remember why I fell in love with running in the first place.

In that same post I was whining about being 162 pounds. That hasn't changed, unfortunately, but the running motivation certainly has.

Q, you always make me smile!

K&D, I did some internet sleuthing and didn't find any great options. Q, how big is your indoor track? Because the one closest to me is 1/16 of a mile. Ain't no way I'm going to circle a track 250 times without threat of major bodily harm.

LaMa, I had same thought, the back and forth isn't exactly good for my anxiety so I might as well just buckle down and know what I'm doing.

The one I visited when I took a quasi- chi running seminar was 1/4 mile. Inside a big dome and circles a few indoor soccer fields so it's reasonably sized. Friend went there quite a bit during the winter months preparing for a half marathon and said it was a nice option as you could stop for water breaks as required.

1/8th mile and it's something you have to adjust to. Slow down in the tight curves. They flip the direction every week which helps, but I wouldn't want to do long runs on it. Yours would be 50 laps for a 5K.
