The mind is the enemy

Q, I felt pretty badass getting out there every day, even if 3 of the 4 runs were only 1 to 1.25 miles. It was the first thing I did after getting to our rental place, and the last one was squeezed in between a visit with my grandma and dinner with my mother. But man was it hard to breathe during that first mile! My second mile was on the beach, which was a first for me. Sand, sun, and a gentle slope are actually far from ideal running conditions but the scenery couldn't be beat!

Oaks- Well done on your badass running! ;) You.... &..... Q .......& this running streak! :D Bloody awesome! xo Cate

Q has definitely outdone me on this streak but I am happy to be in the same thought bubble as him :)

Went to the gym to do an hour on the treadmill for day 14. I'm working towards more consistent speeds on my longer runs, and the treadmill is my best tool for that. I completed 5.5 miles, and I made sure to throw in a few hills and faster minutes in there, too.

Regarding food: I've fallen back into my sneaky eating habit. Last night I ate six Reese's pumpkins for a total of 540 sneaky calories. Didn't do that math until just now, ouch. What a waste of calories!

The good news is that I didn't do any binge drinking while on vacation, and in fact I skipped my office holiday party.... A party that starts at noon. And I usually don't go home until 10 or later. Free drinks the entire time. That's 10 hours of bad decisions, and two days of painful regret. But not this year! I still recall last year's runs from this weekend. One mile at 8 pm on Saturday because that's the earliest I could even consider getting off the couch, and a couple of miles on Sunday that started out great but ended in panic because my digestive system takes an extra day to recover than I think it does. But not this year!

It's a nice feeling, LaMa. There are three days/events* a year where I always struggle to control myself with drinking and to have this one not be an issue is a good feeling. The other two are in May, so I'm good for a bit. Ideally I'd love to just learn to handle myself like an adult, but I'm a work in progress.

*This doesn't mean I don't struggle on other days, of course, these are just the major annual events that get me every time.

Food consumption today has been grape nuts and a bowl of homemade chili. On deck: curry with chicken for dinner (after a quick mile run) and an apple or a pear for dessert. There was no sneaky snacking yesterday, but there was homemade pan-fried spring rolls, which I ate more of than I needed to. I gave in to peer pressure and was hungry after my run. There was also salad, though. I'm happy to be using oil and vinegar as my salad dressing quite frequently these days. I can't stand bottled Italian dressing anymore!

I think congratulations are well & truly in order Oaks. Avoiding the 2 day hangover was a biggie by the sound of it. We are all a work in progress. Pan-fried spring rolls sound delicious! I make my own salad dressing now & occasionally consider buying a pre-prepared one, but mine is much nicer & way cheaper too. I add some French seeded mustard, pepper & some minced garlic. Your today's food sounds yummy. I love curries!

Ooh, just a touch of some fancy mustard sounds yummy, Cate! I usually add salt and pepper if I think of it but the mustard would spruce it up.

I always forget that all mustards are not created equal. For some reason we have a few varieties in the fridge right now, I'll have to see what's in there.

Had a yummy lunch at a restaurant yesterday. I ordered a steak salad but picked off of things my colleagues ordered, too (clams oreganata, French fries, fresh donuts for dessert). Tonight I am having drinks with the ladies from work.... I have really shown a lot of self control when going out for drinks lately, and I'm excited to continue that trend. I'd love to savor a nice glass of wine or two and enjoy some girl talk.

Tuesday's run was 4.06 miles in forty minutes. I'm about to head out for a simple mile before work. I should have gotten up earlier and done some other exercises but I didn't think to do that.

Well done on the self control Oaks. Enjoying yourself, without the damage. Win/win! :)

I'm 23 days into my running streak! In spite of nearly 20 miles of running last week I'm up a little bit in weight. I thought I was doing a little better with snacking but Friday and Saturday turned into heavy meal days, and Friday included pizza and two large desserts. G and I both felt bloated after that, so I'm sure we were dealing with a sodium overload of sorts, too.

These forums are great, but it sounds like you need a coach. It just really helps with getting on the right path and adding extra accountability into your life.

Nice running Oaks! It's really hard to up the running without being ravenous for a bit. I'll hit day 400 on the end of your streak. Just think you might be doing the same this time next year. :p

Great job on the running! A couple of heavy meals are way better than getting back to snacking so don´t beat yourself up :grouphug:

Q, I just shuddered at the thought of running daily through the New England winter! I know people do it... I'll start seeing the Boston marathoners training in just a few weeks, but watching them last year through our 110" of snow did NOT make me jealous, haha. But who knows, maybe I'll change my mind! I do have my eye on a couple of spring races.

Thanks LaMa! I've gotta watch myself carefully to keep the big meals from colliding with the snacking. There's no excuse for both!

Thanks Stacey! Tonight is run #24 and the final destination is the burrito joint that my G requested we order dinner from. I have decided to get a salad. It will have all the best stuff that's in a burrito but with extra veggies. Win-win.
