Hi,

Long time listener, first time caller. I mean poster. I have been lurking here since June 2007 and have made a few scattered posts. I love the diary section of the site and really enjoy reading about everyone's experiences and seeing the support from the community. I practically feel like I know some of you personally from keeping up with your diaries! I hope that is not too creepy.

//About Me:
-Female
-24 years old
-Live in Las Vegas
-Just got engaged this past December. Getting married 8/1/09

This morning, 138.0 pounds
(I don't take regular measurements and the only body fat measurement I have taken is on a scale. I don't think that is accurate at all.)
Current measurements: chest - 36, waist - 27, hips - 36

//Weight History (long and possibly boring!)

I was a chubby kid growing up. The most I weighed was 167 pounds. Looking back with the knowledge I have now, it is very easy to see that the reason for my weight problem was the sheer amount of food I ate. My mother would cook dinner for us every night and we were expected to clean our plates and get seconds, thirds, fourths... as much as we could stuff into our chubby faces. According to my mom. food was the solution to all of life's problems. If you were grumpy, it must be because you needed to eat. Sleepy? Eat something. Having trouble figuring out that math problem? Have a cheeseburger.

I was always unhappy with my weight but I wasn't sure what to do. I was heavily involved in sports since I was 5 years old, but soccer practice would be negated with trip through the drive through afterward. I developed a lot of bad habits. When I was 10 years old and went to my mother crying that I was fat, she had a lot of sympathy for me. She vowed to start cooking healthier and stop buying so much junk. I didn't exercise any more than the regular soccer practices and games that I was already involved in. I ended up losing about 15 pounds from our family diet. Really we just ate less and made simple changes like skim milk instead of whole, more fat free or low cal snack foods, etc.

I kept that off for as long as my mom continued to cook more healthfully. That didn't last forever though and I slowly gained the weight back as she went back to her old cooking (and grocery shopping) habits. I started high school at around 160 pounds. The pressure of high school caused me to be even more unhappy with my body. I didn't know anything about diet and exercise though and had to rely on my mom for what she was buying at the grocery store.

I played on the varsity soccer team my freshman year and was introduced to running. It was something I always hated, but I actually enjoyed the challenge now. I had to go to soccer practices every day and lost weight in the process getting down to about 145 pounds.

After the soccer season was over, I continued to run periodically and was able to lose a few more pounds. I remember seeing 139 once and being so surprised. A few months later, I was back to my old habits again. Minimal exercise and maximum calories and bad food choices. I graduated high school somewhere between 150 and 155 pounds.

I started college that summer and it was the best thing ever. I had free access to a state of the art gym, I was able to make my own healthy food choices, and I was surrounded by people who were interested in their own fitness and nutrition.

In college, I went to the gym pretty much every day because I enjoyed it. I ate more healthfully, but wasn't stressed about eating perfectly in any means. I just really enjoy eating salads and fruits and vegetables and now had them available all the time at the school cafeteria. I lost weight without really trying. I was eating better and exercising simply because I enjoyed it.

The next year was pretty much the same. I'd estimate I was around pounds. I never actually weighed myself though. The summer before my Junior year I stayed on campus to work and take a couple classes. Hardly anyone was in town and my roommates were not moving in until the end of the summer. I went to the gym, went running, and cooked healthy meals because I had nothing better to do. Again, I lost weight without even trying. I still didn't weigh myself because I didn't really care.

After my roommates moved in and the school year started, I got too busy to cook all the time and wasn't able to make it to the gym as much. I immediately noticed I was gaining some weight and decided I didn't like that. I bought a scale and weighed 147. I wasn't that upset and just sorta maintained that until the end of that year.

Then I moved to Vegas. My boyfriend at the time was very overweight and I picked up a lot of his eating habits. I had joined a gym so I didn't gain nearly as much weight as I should have. I got up to about 157. I was not happy and toyed around with dieting and exercise a bit. I still wasn't very informed about what I was supposed to be doing so only ever lost about 5 pounds.

Then I moved into my own apartment. The next live in boyfriend that I had was super skinny and ate like a bird. Instead of me following his eating habits, I'd eat what he didn't finish. I also started skipping the gym and just generally got lazy. At this time I also started a new job and found myself snacking on office treats daily. I got back up to about 167 pounds.

I was very unhappy and I missed the few brief months back in college that I was in such great shape. I estimated that at that time I weighed 135 pounds and vowed to get back there. In March 2007 I started going to the gym every day after work and I really educated myself. I read Tom Venuto's book and learned so much about nutrition and fitness. I was researching online daily trying to educate myself (which is how I eventually found this forum).

I did HIIT at the gym and lifted heavy weights. I ran outside on the weekends. I ate more whole natural foods and cut processed foods down to nearly nothing. I really stuck with it this time instead of trying some weird crash diet and it worked. I ended 2007 plateaued at 143 pounds and completely burnt out from the gym. I took a break from the gym and decided to focus on my distance running, which had become a hobby and a challenge at that point. I also broke up with my boyfriend and was now single.

I would run 5-8 miles per day and then a long 10+ mile run on Saturday or Sunday. My eating habits stayed the same, however, I allowed myself to eat "whatever I wanted" on the weekend. I was able to break through the plateau because of all the added cardio. I probably lost some muscle along with the fat, I am aware of that. 2008 I hovered around 137-138 and a couple times popped back up to 140. I would add an extra workout or watch what I little closer and was able to get back to the 130's.

I started going back to the gym when I moved in with my fiance in August. My burnout was over and I wanted to actually get to my original goal of 135. I have since continued to hover in the 137-138 range. The lowest I ever saw was 136.2 and I'm pretty sure I was dehydrated at that time.

//Current Plan

I have re-dedicated myself to getting to my original goal of 135. The closer I have gotten, the more I think that my ideal weight is probably more like 125 or 130. I am not completely unhappy with my body, so I have been going to the gym but still eating poorly on the weekend. I am trying to correct that and get serious. If I really want to do this, then I have to put in more effort. That being said, I am absolutely thrilled that I have been able to maintain this low weight for so long with such minimal effort. This is a first for me after years of yo-yo-ing. I believe that taking the time to educate myself about fitness and nutrition was the key.

I have eaten 50% better the past two weekends and am "in the process" of committing 100%. 2-3 days of poor eating is obviously what is holding me back from losing any weight.

This is what my week in exercise looks like:
Sunday - gym
Monday - gym
Tuesday - gym
Wednesday - indoor soccer game
Thursday - indoor soccer game
Friday - break
Saturday - longer run outside (5+ miles) OR gym

What I do at the gym:
1. Warm up ~5 minutes on stair climber or elliptical
2. Abs (crunches, leg lifts, etc)
3. Treadmill. I mix it up. Either HIIT, hills, or maybe just a regular run. It depends on how I am feeling but I am on the treadmill about 30 minutes on average.
4. Upper body or lower body resistance training. I will admit that I don't really have a structured schedule or plan for my lifting. I DO lift heavy though and generally do 3 sets of 8 reps for each exercise that I do. I'm not afraid of free weights.

What I eat in a typical day at work:
8 am: Banana with cottage cheese OR plain oatmeal OR plain shredded wheat
10 am: Some sort of bar. I pick something low in sugar and high in protein. I like the South Beach and Fiber One bars.
12 pm: Turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread, piece of fruit, yogurt OR chicken breast with whole wheat pasta & vegetables
3 pm: low fat yogurt with cottage cheese OR raw mixed nuts w/ dried fruit
-go to the gym after work, I am home around 6:30-
7 pm: Salad with lot of veggies and grilled chicken OR Turkey sandwich OR chicken breast, veggies, whole grains
-If get hungry later in the evening again I'll eat a piece of fruit or some cottage cheese.-

I used to eat a bagel with cream cheese on Friday mornings. I haven't had that for about a month. I have also been trying to make better choices on the weekends but it is rather difficult because I am home with my fiance and we just don't have as structured of a meal plan as I try to keep during the week. Basically, I think all of my hard work and dedication during the week is negated by the weekend and I am trying to get away from that so I can lose these last few pounds.

//I need your help...

...to motivate me and keep me on track. I also think I could benefit from some new ideas for the gym and ways to continue healthy eating on the weekends. I probably also need a more structured gym plan and some new things to try to get me through this plateau finally.

If you made it this far reading, I am either a great writer, an extremely interesting person, or you are bored at work. Whatever the case, thanks in advance for your support and advice and it feels great to finally be "out of the closet" so to speak on this forum. Admitting that I am trying to lose weight is a really big step for me and I'm really excited to get everyone's advise on my situation. <3

Here's some recent pics of me for reference...

engagement photos... I just got them back yesterday

I have actually started off the weekend with a ridiculous amount of motivation. Tony has been craving grilled cheese and he wasn't feeling well yesterday so I went out and got the makings of grilled cheese sandwiches... and only made one! I ate a salad with grilled chicken instead.

This morning I skipped toast with jam and ate a banana with peanut butter. I'm still waking up, but I'm planning on going to the gym in a bit.

I know you're looking for inspiration yourself, but you're an inpiration to me! First of all, I think you are really beautiful as you are now, but I can understand wanting to lose a little more... I'm at 145ish lbs now, and would love to get down to 120/115 (I'm only 5'2", haha). I'm sorry I'm not much of help, I'm just so happy about you conquering so much already, it makes me really want to get fit, too! I just need to find excercise I like... ugh. But, anyways, congratulations, and good luck doing more.. I Agree, the "whatever" weekends are probably the only thing stopping you from those last few pounds now!

Thanks for the reply! One of the reasons I was hesitant to start a diary is because I don't have a phenomenal amount of weight to lose. I AM happy with how far I've come and that I've been able to actually maintain it for once. I think posting more here will give me the motivation I need to get my butt moving again! I also love how everyone inspires each other and I hope I can be a part of that.

Hi there!! I also think you're beautiful already, but I COMPLETELY understand where you are coming from. I'm 5'2 and about 120lbs. Not an unhealthy weight, but I am not completely happy with it. I KNOW I have more potential, and I am determined to get to a point where I feel comfortable wearing any type of clothing. I have no problem going to the gym and eating healthy during the week. In fact, I work at a gym which is very motivating in itself. The weekends are definitely what are holding me back. We can help support each other, ESPECIALLY on the weekends. Nothing is more discouraging than working hard all week just to blow it on the stupid weekend. We're better than that!

Congratulations on the engagement btw. You guys look so happy!!! :)

Oh and I thought it was funny that you mentioned someone being bored at work and reading your journal. That's what I'm doing now haha. I needed some inspiration and motivation to keep up the healthy habits this weekend. :)

Hey lady! I agree you are gorgeous and you look fantastic! I'm not sure where those last few pounds are going to come from.

We are the same general stats... 24 female, you have 3 pounds on me and we are the same height... however you look waaaaaay smaller than I do.

I look forward to seeing you reach your goals! Consistency is key... but you already know that! :)

Pretty much all of my extra fat is in my stomach. I saw your tummy picture and was super jealous! Isn't it funny how we are all built so differently?

I wanted to go to the gym today instead of running outside because I had been planning on trying HIIT on the stair climber (the escalator thing, not the stepper). I had always done my HIIT on the treadmill. Here's what I did:

Stair climber:
3 minute warmup working my way up to level 5
1 minute at level 10 (this was pretty hard!)
1 minute at level 5
repeated 5 cycles for 10 minute total
3 minute cool down

omg that kicked my butt.

300 crunches (different kinds to hit all areas)

Lifting -
bicep curls: 3 sets of 8 with 15 pound weights
tricep kickbacks: 3 sets of 8 with 12 pound weights
butterflies: 3 sets of 8 at 30 pounds
assisted pullups: 3 sets of 8 at 70 pounds assistance

Then ran on the treadmill 2.5 miles at 6.2 mph. This should have been VERY easy for me, but I was ready to stop after the first 1/2 mile. The HIIT at the beginning really took it out of me.

Awesome workout, especially for a Saturday! I am proud of myself.

I always checkout wlf during downtime at work! haha

Thanks for stopping by! About working at the gym - do you usually stay after your shift to work out?

Its true, you're gorgeous already! I loved reading your story actually, I think you're inspirational as a normal person with normal, ever-changing priorities.

I got married in Vegas this past June; it was great. I LOVE Vegas actually. Though, you live there so may feel differently.

Anyway, I look forward to watching you reach your goal and cheering you on! :)

Gotta love genetics right?

Sounds like your workout was pretty awesome. Are you strictly doing cardio or mixing it up with some strength training? For me adding more strength training really made the difference.

Have you tried doing planks for ab work instead of boring ole crunches? You might try them out see if you like them.

You're on track it sounds like though!

I always always always do a combination of strength training and cardio. I do tend to do more cardio than strength training though.

I'm definitely looking to try new things!

I have only lived in Vegas for abut 3.5 years. I still really like it here and don't plan on going anywhere soon. Where did you get married? We'll be downtown at the Golden Nugget :)

Well I think I had my first successful weekend in a long time! I ate well and got two great workouts in. I really think just having this journal and feeling accountable is going to make the difference :)

I am off work and in classes today and tomorrow so I'm able to stop by home and make something for lunch. Looking forward to a grilled chicken salad!

lol I think it was just called The Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. It was like 1/2 a block from the city hall where we got the license. We stayed in Planet Hollywood which was awesome.

Love Vegas; it was the first trip my husband and I took together (ever, before we got married) and then we went back to get married there. Its like cemented for me. Now that we're here though, I don't think we'll be going back for a while...

I'd jump at the chance to live there though

I really love it here, it is a great town! And people always visit :)

I can't believe how good I feel. I really was eating way more crap on the weekend than I was letting myself believe. My Mondays were spent feeling bloated and fat and vowing to have a great workout later. Tuesdays were slightly better, and by Friday I was feeling fine. Then the weekend would come and it was back to square one!

I can't believe how motivated I feel. It is a different kind of motivation and determination this time since I feel so much closer to my goal. I am excited instead of overwhelmed. I am even looking forward to eating fat free cottage cheese.

I was going to put this in my first post but I forgot!

How much weight do you want to lose?
I am not sure! I currently weigh 138 pounds. When I originally started losing weight my goal was 135. Now that I am so close, I think 125 or 130 would be better. I definitely have more than 2 pounds of fat on my stomach. So... I want to lose 8-13 pounds.

What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
I don't really have a specific date. I'd rather just get there when I get there. I guess I would like to see how far I can get by my wedding on August 1st, but if I don't lose a single ounce before then I will still be happy.

How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?

Really clean eating, even on the weekends. Some sort of exercise everyday. Watch portions.

Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
I could talk to a few people but it's hard for them to relate to me a lot of the time. I don't really think that I need to have a cheering squad anyway. In all honestly, I do fine by myself. My fiance knows that I am trying to eat healthier and work out more though. I have recently started posting on wlf to see if being an active member of the community helps.

How realistic is your goal?
I think 130 is very realistic. 125 may or may not be, I will have to reevaluate as I get closer.

When will you start?
Already started.

What is your current height and weight?
5'5 138.0 this morning

If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
130

At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?

130. That would be like 2 pounds per month, which is very realistic.

Why do you want to lose weight?
I lost over 25 pounds and then just stopped and never got to my original goal of 135. I didn't gain the weight back. It was nice to know that I am able to maintain my weight without having a crazy lifestyle. I ate like a normal person and only worked out 2-3 times a week, sometimes less. I am ready to get serious again and lose the last bits of fat that bother me.

Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion?

No. I am happy with my body as it is now. I'm comfortable doing whatever, but I would like to shape up a bit more.

What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
Well, the exercise part is easy. As long as I can stay motivated, there aren't many obstacles that could keep me from getting the exercise I need. Food could be a challenge. I have been baking and cooking things for Tony but I eat them too. Not a lot, but still more than I should. The biggest obstacle is going to be sticking to my guns about what I am eating and not giving in to temptations.

Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?

I don't really have a weight problem. My previous "weight problem" was caused by years of uninformed eating and not enough physical activity. I was never super fat, but I did lose 25 pounds of FAT, which is a lot. Pretty much all of my poor eating habits came from when I was a child. I learned a lot about nutrition and it really helped me to put things into perspective.

What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
I have already made a commitment to go to the gym after work everyday. That is a big deal for me. I was totally burnt out before and couldn't bear to go. I relied on running outside to maintain my weight loss. It did work and I even lost a few more pounds from it, but going to the gym after work guarantees that I get a good workout in. Also, I like to do resistance training as well as cardio. Another big change is working out on the weekend. I used to do nothing on the weekend, which would undo any progress I had made during the week. Something I could do that I am not currently doing would be waking up early to run a couple miles. This would be HUGE and make a big impact. I really lack the motivation to get up in the morning though. I am working on this.

Have you lost weight in the past?
Yes. 25+ pounds.

Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
I didn't gain it back. I stopped trying for a few reasons I think. I was burnt out at the gym. I met Tony and began eating differently and skipping workouts. I was happy with my weight.

What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?
Dieting alone doesn't work for me. I HAVE to add exercise in also or I don't see any results. If I do lose weight I only feel flabby and weak, probably because I am losing muscle.

Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?

I go through phases where I will keep track of what I am eating for a few days just to get some perspective/ I regularly look up different food items on calorie king to get a better idea about how much I am eating every day. I generally just ballpark my calories and don't calculate an exact number. I would be willing to keep better track if I don't see results now that I am recommitted.

Do you cook at home often?

Sort of. Actually, when I lost the most weight I wasn't cooking very much. Most of my meals were salads or things that didn't require cooking. I do like to cook though and really enjoy making healthy dishes. I do not eat out very much though, which I think is the point of this question. 90% of my meals are prepared at home.

How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
Maybe once per week. Where we go depends on our mood.

What are your three favorite foods?

Pizza, pasta, Mexican. The three most fattening things HA!

What are your three favorite restaurants?
Anything that serves the above.

What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
I need to watch my portions, especially at dinner. I need to get it out of my head that I can eat whatever I want on the weekend. That only works for maintenance. I need to get back to eating less bread and pasta. Whole wheat is okay, but I need to keep it to breakfast and lunch only.

If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?
Stomach and arm fat would be gone. Upper body would be generally slimmer. Butt would not be flat. Boobs would be nice.

Do you eat when you are not hungry?

Yes. A lot. This is something else I need to work on. I have a tendency to eat if I'm bored and I also eat until I am way past being full.

Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?

Yes. Something I am working on.

Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
Yes. Especially desserts.

Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
Yes.

Do you eat as a reward?

Yes.

Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
Yes.

What do you normally eat for a meal?
Breakfast
yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit
oatmeal with fruit
toast with peanut or almond butter

Lunch
cottage cheese with fruit
salad
sandwich

Dinner
salad
rice and vegetables
pasta and vegetables

This is really just during the week. Weekends are different.

What type of snacks do you eat?

Lots of fruits and vegetables, almonds, yogurt, cottage cheese.

In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
Sunday - gym
Monday - gym
Tuesday - gym
Wednesday - soccer (+ gym sometimes)
Thursday - soccer (+ gym sometimes)
Friday - rest day
Saturday - gym or run outside

Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
Gym which is on the way home from work. I run outside in the neighborhood.

What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?

Running, soccer. I don't know if I have a third. (...sex? ;) )

What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
I feel really good now that I am watching my diet and going to the gym regularly. My motivation is to continue to feel good and maybe even better. I would also like to FINALLY reach my original goal of 135.

Do you have rewards for certain goals?

No. Maybe I should think of something. I need to think of rewards that aren't food related!

I just bought Lyle McDonald's book: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook

I have heard good things about this guy and have read up on some of his stuff at clutchfitness. I'll be reading this during downtime at work!

It also came with a home exercise guide and a calculator to figure exactly what you should be eating! I am excited to look through all this stuff :)
