Hi all,

I am a female in my mid 20s looking to lose weight. About two weeks ago I became a vegetarian again after almost a decade of eating meat. I became a vegetarian anew for ethical reasons and also to lose weight. I realized that I would rather be on a strict vegetarian diet than a strict lean protein meat diet. I was just on a lean protein diet that requires me to eat a lot of animal protein, and I realized that I don't like meat enough to be on this diet. The diet is part of a fitness routine by celeb trainer David Kirsch. It's called "The Ultimate New York Body Plan. The diet was very restrictive and I found myself losing weight on it, but I could never stick to it. As a transitioning vegetarian I am afraid to introduce certain foods into my diet for fear that they will cause me to gain weight. My diet is primarily of carbohydrates so I am afraid to add such foods as beans and legumes. I realize right now that I am consuming way too little calories, sometimes as little as 700 or less. I would like advice from any one who has experience with losing weight on a vegetarian diet, especially if any of them try to implement a low-carb approach. For breakfast I usually eat one cup of the Kashi cereal that has 13g of protein, with one cup of vanilla almond milk. I eat only one fruit a day, almost always an apple. I eat ten raw almonds daily as a snack. For lunch I may have 1/4 cup of quinoa cooked with different vegetables such as celery, tomatoes, and onions. For dinner I may have a Boca vegetarian patty with a salad.

With the David Kirsch diet I couldn't consume fruits for the first two weeks, or for as long as I wanted to be in a weight loss period. He also does not permit beans/legumes , breads, dairy, pastas, alcohol, simple carbs etc. I want to carry some of his principles into my vegetarian diet. I am only eating one fruit a day, I do not eat bread, and I do not eat any kind of rice or dairy. The only grain I consume is quinoa, but only 1/4 cup because it has way too many calories. I don't like the taste of tofu or seitan so if any one out there has any tips on how to make the tofu taste better please help. I try to exercise 5xs a week. I usually do 30 min on the eliptical machine, 22 min on the stairmaster, and 30 min on the treadmill. On the eliptical machine I try to keep my movement above the 59 mark. I use the second level for the stairmaster. I do 10 min at 3.5 mph, then 10 min @ 3.6mph, followed by 10 min @ 3.7mph followed by a cool down. I still do the exercises from the David Kirsch workout. Three days a week I do a core program which lasts about 45 min and is very intense. I do exercises with light weight dumbells, a medecine ball, and a stability ball. The other two days I do his ab exercises or his lower body exercises. I really want to lose weight so if any one can offer tips I would greatly appreciate it.

I am 5'3" and weigh approximately 158 pounds.

Namaste :)

Wow, I don't know how people stick to diets. I've really changed my eating but I don't like calling that a diet, because to me that means not enough food or constant hunger to be successful. I don't like meal plans that say No you can't have that because I know myself and I know I won't follow those, but I am a fan of everything in moderation. Why not visit a nutritionist and they can give you a variety of suggestions? Good for you for getting into a place where you can be healthy!

Hey Julie, thanks for the reply. :) Hehe I did make an appointment to visit a nutritionist this wednesday. Lol, I'm the opposite in that I like to know exactly what I am allowed to eat and I kind of become militant about it, hmmm maybe that's why I always fail at diets. Everything in moderation is definitely the right approach. I'm trying to shed this weight quickly so that's why I'm a little hard core. I read the post you wrote when you joined this site, and I wanna say congrats to you for taking the steps to make yourself happier and healthier. I wish I had been able to tackle my weight issues at 23, but its four years later for me and I feel it's never to late to take care of yourself and have the body you want.

Zera- It sounds like you are on the right track! Good for you and I wish you the best in your journey. You will succeed if you become a slave to good habits. Take care.

Hello there Zera :)

I am a vegetarian and have been my whole life. I eat a lot of Quorn as it's high in protein and pretty low in calories and fat. You can make pretty much anything with it and it takes great.
I also make things like nut burgers and bean burgers which are YUMMY!
Something else I love is making a good lentil and vegetable soup.
These are all quite good sources of protein.

I have no idea how you could make tofu taste better although I have seen tofu burger recipes about so they might be worth a try. Goodness anyone would think I like burgers far too much :)

I don't know if that has been any help at all but anyway good luck :)
Sounds like you are doing great already.

Lydia

Hey Lydia,

Welcome to this site, and thanks for dropping me a line. : ) I looked up that product Quorn you mentioned. They seem to have really yummy stuff. It reminds me of a company I used to buy food from as a teen called Health is Wealth. Their vegetarian foods are amazing. Lol the problem is I would usually eat the whole package in one sitting. Do you use a lot of tofu? If so does the hard tofu taste better? I would love to get some recipes from you for those nut and bean burgers that you make.

Hello! I'm new to here too, but am also a vegetarian. Have been for most of my life. I'm a huge fan of soups, nut and bean patties. For the record I loathe Tofu, but still eat it now and then. Yes, the harder Tofu is much nicer, and you can always marinate it to help out with flavour.
Wishing you all the best with your losing, nice to meet you :)

Hi Jess, nice to meet you too. Welcome to this site. :beerchug: Hmm are there vegetarians that really like tofu? Maybe it's an aquired taste. I'll keep an eye out for the hard tofu for when I want to take the big plunge. What do you marinate it with to make it tase better?

Lol, I know it's shocking!!!
You can use any marinade from supermarkets (although some can be high in sugar etc so be careful checking labels if you're too worried) or you can make your own.
One I use is a splash of soy sauce, snifter of honey, crushed garlic and a few sesame seeds. You can add anything really, lemon juice, sweet chilli sauce, teryaki... even worstershire sauce is a go-er for something different :)

An update. :waving:

Hi everybody, hi Dr. Nick!

I would like to start off by saying what an amazing site this is. I joined this site on Saturday, and posted my first thread last Monday. Since then I have received great advice and support from different people. I have been inspired by the countless stories of people on this site. It is really wonderful to have the support of people who are dealing with the same issues I am struggling with. I have been keeping a food diary for quite some time, but it wasn't until I started posting my diary online that I started to really make great changes. People helped me to realize the impact of consuming too little calories. In the past two weeks I would consume less than 700-800 calories a day and I was setting myself up for major sabotage and binge eating. We may know something is bad for us on an intellectual level, but when other people make you notice this in another light it really sheds greater perspective.

When I started my thread I was trying to exclude many foods from my diet such as most grains, rice, dairy, pastas, and starchy carbs. I am now trying to concentrate on making sure I am eating at least 1200 calories a day, and I am not obsessing over what foods I am eating. I started to add simple carbs like rice cakes and even pasta today. I am not sure as to what the best approach for vegetarians wanting to experience great weight loss is, but I hope to have more information when I visit a nutritionist next Wednesday. I think weight watchers has been so successful because people can eat a wide range of foods without necessarily trying to exclude any particular food group. Certain foods are better for us than others. I may decide to eat whole grain bread instead of rice cakes etc. I have made myself more accountable just by being on this site. People may not always respond to a post, but just putting my food intake here makes me instantly more accountable. I have been steadily going to the gym since Monday. I kept skipping gym work outs the past two weeks. I am also exercising smarter. Instead of exercising on the eliptical, stairmaster, and treadmill, I am instead concentrating on working harder on the eliptical machine for 45 minutes. I wish you all the best with your own weight loss struggles. We can do it! It just takes doing things one day at a time.

Cheers. :grouphug:

Ooh I'm loving those spices you mentioned. I think a combination of crushed garlic, lemon juice, and some sesame seeds will be the ticket! Hehe maybe I will start out by just marinating a tablespoon of tofu to see if I can stomach it. Thanks for the tips, you're the best. :hurray:
