The Diary of Madness

Hey! I like your dedication and how well you keep track of things! Maybe I'll have to infringe on your copyright a little and follow your example. :D

I TRY to keep track of things. I've been really good about it the last month. And I think it helped a lot. But before, I was horrible. I absolutely hated writing down everything I ate. Now it's just part of my daily routine. And infringe away!

I read a tip that you do better to write down what you eat before you eat it. If you haven't writen it, then you don't eat it.

It wouldn't work for me, but maybe for you. I've known that I'm just a person who can't write everything down. I'm not going to measure everything. I know that if I have to do that I will fail, so I'm going along trying to listen to my body better and make decissions from that. If I don't lose weight fast enough, well that's part of the learning process. If I start gaining, then that's something to learn from, too.

Morning! Er, afternoon...I'm a bit slow today...drank WAY too much this weekend...

So, reviewing last week, let's see how I did:

Diet:
  • 1600 calories a day ACTUAL: 1700 - not bad
  • 20% protein, 15% fat, 65% carbohydrates ACTUAL: 15% protein, 35% fat
  • Only drink alcohol one night a week ACTUAL: three nights!

Ok, so diet wasn't the best. This week was hard because of the 4th, my fiance's birthday and a friend from out of town staying with us. Back on track today though!

Exercise:
  • 2850 calories a day ACTUAL: 2869!
  • exercise class once a week ACTUAL: nope, didn't make it
  • walk 4 miles 5 days a week ACTUAL: exceeded

So I still need to make it to a class.

Things are looking pretty good. Less beer and more structured cardio classes and I will really have this down!

Oh dear. Something went totally screwy. Sunday, I weighed 192.4. Then on Monday, after quite a night of drinking and eating I weighed 193.5. I figured it might go back down today. But yesterday I ate a bit much too and today I weigh 196.2! Stupid scale. I had better be back down tomorrow! :(

When you say you ate too much, did that include high sodium foods? Water weight makes a big difference and sodium can be responsible for that. Drink a lot of water to flush it out and it should all balance out. Remember, it isn't weight that we want to lose, although we keep talking about it, it's fat.

I've had a small, pretty inexplicable gain myself this week... back on the pony though, right !?

Yeah, it was definitely high sodium food. We went out and I had some rich creamy pasta dish then drank 9 or 10 beers and ate half a pizza. Uh...talk about a screw up. I'm surprised it took 2 days to really hit, but it was probably because I was still dehydrated Monday and I drank enough water to hit 196.2 by Tuesday. Today I'm down to 195.8 so things are looking better. My "tight" pants (ones I couldn't wear last week) still fit so I know it's not really fat. It's just frustrating!

Oh man I've been a lazy bones the past two days! And today I literally don't have time to workout. It's the only day of the entire month that I'm completely full and it's seeming like the most important day to do something! Maybe I can squeeze in a late night workout...but then I have a hard time sleeping. Sigh.

Just did the calcs. I'll have to average 3000 calories burned for the next 5 days to make my exercise goal for the week. Not impossible, but it's going to be hard. Especially because today I'll be lucky if I get in 2600. But I'm gonna try my damnedest!

Thanks Anke!

Well, things turned out strange yesterday. I had an evening meeting which was going to prevent me from working out. But then I decided that I would walk the 2 miles there. So I added an extra 4 miles of FAST walking (BARELY made it there in time and I wanted to get home before dark since it was through some woods). And I still only hit about 2600 calories burned. My bodybugg was low on battery and I replaced it when I got home. I wonder if that affected it? It's never happened before though. Ah well, my weight has finally evened out - I'm down to 192.9 today so I'm not that worried anymore.

It's strange. As much as I logically knew that I hadn't gained nearly 3 pounds of fat, it still freaked me out. I've read about the scale mentality, but my weight is usually VERY stable and only fluctuates by less than a pound from day to day. So I hadn't experienced the panic from seeing a strange number on the scale. Boy, do I know what it feels like now! Hopefully, this will be more motivation not to binge drink and eat. I don't do it that often though and it's nice to know that it doesn't REALLY wreck your whole diet.

Glad to hear about the weight. You knew it would get back to where it should be, but it is frustrating seeing those bad numbers.

Hehe, glad you're chilled again...

well done on fitting in that walk... it's the best feeling when you really accept you won't exercise because of "time"... and then you're suddenly like "screw it! I'm GETTING my exercise in!!"... thats how you know ur making a lifestyle change :)

Well done!

5k and cottage cheese

I ran a timed 5k this morning. Sucked bad. Not the running - the time. Before my surgery in January, I was running it right about 28 minutes. I've been slow to get back going and this is the first 5k I've run in a very long time. 37 minutes. No kidding, 37 minutes. I guess at least I finished it. And I know that I can improve. I'll probably try to set some goals with that in the future.

And cottage cheese. I love the stuff. Or at least I thought I did. I only go to the store about once a month (all my veggies, bread, and most dairy are delivered) and when I remember, I pick up a little thing of cottage cheese. It has 4 servings and the whole thing is usually gone in 4 days. And then I miss it until I remember to buy it again - once a month or every two months. So I was at Costco with my mom and saw the MEGA container of it. I figured I might as well get it. Ok, here's the problem. I have to eat a serving every day for 16 days or the stuff would go bad. I'm on day 14 now. If I never have to see cottage cheese for the rest of my life I will die happy. It is most certainly an occasional item for me!

Finishing the 5k is a huge step. Now to improve your time it will just happen as long as you keep doing the run. When your time stops improving, then there are things that you can do to increase your speed. I'm almost at that point myself, but I haven't been going out as frequently as I should.

Keeping to one serving a day is my problem with cottage cheese. I mix honey in it and 4 oz. is just not enough.

Mix it with honey?!?!? My god man, you are a genius! I think I might make it through those last two servings! :p

I was just doing some research on how to improve my time. I never really did anything last year, just kept running. And what I've read matches with what I experienced and what you are saying. Just get in better shape and the time will improve. I had hit quite a wall at 28 minutes and even had longer times if something was off that week, so maybe once I get back to that point, I can do dedicated exercises aimed at more improvement. Thanks for the tips!

Just follow the ladies. :sifone: I'll put honey on anything.

My wife likes it with honey and walnuts. Also, really really good.
