the big scary unknown

Ok, so this is really around day 30 of my weight loss.
I started at 194.5 lb on May 30th (the most I have ever weighed)
I am now at 181.5.
13 pounds down.
My short goal is 150 lbs by my birthday (October 24th), but after that I want to set a new goal depending on where my body is by then, I know for my height (5'5") I should be at 150 or less. It would be nice to be 130, but we'll just see.
I have been on diets before, but I either failed or I would lose a large amount of weight too quickly and in a very unsafe manner (starving myself).
I am trying to eat the right amount, but I can't really seem to find what that is. I started by eating 600-800 calories a day, but have upped that to 1200ish, though most days I dont even eat that (usually about 1000), but sometimes I eat more (1375 was the most).
If anyone has some input on how much calories I should be consuming I would love to hear it.
Im writing down every thing I eat and trying to keep a very good record. I measure out what I eat and try not to eat out to much, If I do, I use calorie websites to find nutrition information (which I know can be inaccurate) and I try to guess high if not sure. I need to buy a new food scale. My old one is not working anymore.
I'm trying to eat only healthy things with very little snacks. Lots of veggies which is super easy for me since I love them. Some fruit, lots of yogurt, cereal (fiber one, which I actually like) some peanut butter, tuna, shrimp, whole wheat breads and pastas, soup, etc...
Im also taking a multi-vitamin.

I'm really committed this time and I hope posting and reading as much as I can will keep me motivated.

Check out FitDay.com It has accurate calorie counts and will help you figure out how much you should be eating. There are other links on here that will help with that too. You should not go lower than 1200 cals though. GL, you're doing awesome so far.

You and me have very similar goals. My goal is to reach 150-155 by my birthday as well which is October 21. Not sure exactly how much I weight right now. I weight myself on Thursday, so we shall see. My next goal after my BDay one is to be 130-135 by my sons 1st BDay which is February 21. I think I can do it, I think you can too! The foods you are eating sound like good choices. Keep up the good work and Keep on posting!

Thank you both for the encouragement!

Today is my day off, and I had planned to go walking but it is suppose to rain almost all afternoon. Kinda bummed, because I actually enjoy walking.
So instead I think I'll go shopping, lol.

I need to get a new food scale (something nice and digital) and I want to head down to the organic grocery store and find something good to make for dinner for me and my fiance.

FYI, imo, organic skim milk tastes 100 times better then the regular store brands. I can actually drink it now, rather then just on cereal.

Bought my food scale and I love it. It is so worth the splurge to go digital. I don't know how I ever used the old one anymore. It made making dinner tonight a blast.

I made shrimp and scallop kabobs, some with pineapple and some with onion and green pepper, fresh green beans, and pasta with a sun-dried parmesan sauce. 1 serving was 340 calories

I also bought new ramikens so I could make little individual chocolate cakes!

28 grams of chocolate cake mix
1 tablespoon apple sauce
1 tablespoon egg beater whites
1 tablespoon water

Microwave 1 minute and you get little chocolate cakes for about 120 calories.

I still haven't eaten 1200 calories today. I'm at 925c and it's 10 at night so this is when I get to the point of "should I eat more? or do I stop now?"

Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm not really hungry so maybe I will just have a glass of milk or something.

I'm not a morning person, so I do tend to eat late at night, but yeah, I've BTDT. When I was losing (so going way below my targets changed a big deficit to a huge deficit), I usually did try to eat at least close to all of my calories every day, even when I didn't feel like it (barring illness). I also tried to never eat more than my "budget" for calories any day, even when I was very very hungry.

Now that I'm maintaining, I don't worry if I have a less-hungry day, because at some point I'll have a more-hungry day, and they balance each other out. I don't know if that take on things would have worked for me when I was losing, but it would have made the more-hungry days easier, I can tell you that much!

I had that problem a lot when I was charting my food and I think i ended up eating more than I would have if I hadn't been charting. So after a month, I stopped. I'm a big advocate of listening to your body, so if you're truly not hungry, then I'd say skip it. That's just my non expert opinion though. Just make sure to not get in the habit because your body need calories....

for your cals

Thanks Allyphoe, I was hoping the high and low days will balance each other out. I'm not trying to eat under, but I usually end up with more under then over.

I agree with that too. And I have not been starving myself surprisingly enough. I usually do eat when I'm hungry unless I'm at work and can't at the moment, but eat as soon as I get a break. I think my problem is all the foods I'm eating are so low calorie, I feel full, I'm just afraid my body isn't getting enough energy/nutrients, But I'm eating good foods and taking vitamins, so I guess its ok...

Weighed myself today and I'm at 180! 14.5 pounds down. Go me.
I went over on my calories last night but a lot if it was alcohol, but I'm not drinking at all tonite, or for a while for that matter.
Well I'm off to the mall, hope everyone has a happy 4th of July.

Did a good job yesterday. Healthy breakfast, 1 egg, wheat toast and grits, plain, no butter on any of it. Then my fiance and I went on a little day trip, did a lot of walking (to the point where I now have sores from my sandals, guess I need new ones) Had a fantastic salad with lots of veggies, some sunflower seeds, oranges and grilled shrimp and made some lemongrass soup for dinner. Ate a good bit of it, but it was very low calorie.

Tonight we had a pasta bake with alfredo sauce and chicken, but it was homemade, so 458 calories a serving. Came out pretty good since I was just guessing, no recipe.

I felt bad at first for how much money I was spending at the grocery store, but I don't now. We don't go out to eat as much, I bring my lunch every day, and I'm making more homemade meals instead of eating the quick and easy (and high calorie) stuff. All in all its saving me money, which is great.

Plus, something else I wanted to mention, I feel SO much better now, not eating all the crud I was puting into my body.

I bought a blender!

yay. I love it. I started making smoothies recently and my 30 yr old (well, close atleat) food processor just wasnt cutting it. They came out much better tonight. Little yogurt, a banana, some skim milk, ice, and some of this low cal orangee drink I had left. Came out pretty good.
Plus it glows blue, which is pretty sweet.

I figure at this point the more interesting I can make food the better off I will be, since I'm usually the girl that eats something different every night and loves trying new things. I had the same foods the first few weeks I was on my diet and would have failed if I didn't expand out.

I also bought a new toaster oven so I can make my mini chocolate cakes without using the microwave or wasting the energy for the big oven.

Oh, and I have a new idea for crustless apple pie, so If it comes out well I will post it.

:) g'night

You're doing great. Thanks for posting the recipe too! you've got some good ideas and it sounds like you are eating healthy. How many calories do you think you need and about how many are you eating? If you are over 1200 then you should be fine.

Another way to make a sweet treat for just under 100 cals, is to mix a cake mix and a can of pumpkin. It's thick, but bakes up nicely. you can do a full cake or make "muffins" out of it. The other option is the cake mix and a can of diet pop.

GL with your journey
