The big oak (Quercus) needs to drop some dead limbs!

Hi everybody! My back is still an issue, but it is feeling much better. I am back out in the field tomorrow, but hopefully it won't be too intense.

I weighed in at a whopping 323.2 this morning which is a gain of 10 pounds. I'm back to counting calories as of today and I've started walking for exercise and I will slowly ease back into an hour a day of exercise. No weight lifting for the foreseeable future.

I'll be more active here. Sorry to abandon everybody. I look forward to catching up on everyone's diaries.

Welcome back, Q! It's good to see you back in the ring. Sorry the back is still an issue, but you can find a way through.
I've been hit or miss lately too, so no apologies needed. Sometimes we have our A game and sometimes a victory is found in just staying afloat. My back has been an issue lately too, but not as bad as you've been experiencing. I'm just old, so after working outside all day I'm too sore or cramped up to use my new rowing machine.

Hang in there and do what you can.

(Hey I just noticed your new pic! Nice job, ya wookie)

Thanks Tru and Don!

320.4 so down 2.8 from yesterday and I'm pleased that some of the ten was bloat.

I was good on calories yesterday. I'll be in the field today and at least most of the week. I hope the back is ready. I'm ready for it to be ready.

Go Easy! Rest that back, Q. Glad to see some of the bloat come right back off, as you knew that had to be a lot of the pounds.
Drink lots of water and keep cleaning your system out.

Thanks Don!

319.8 this morning so down a bit more and 6.6 pounds away from pre-injury/pigout weight

The field work went well. I covered a bit more than 2 miles on foot and the back is doing okay. It's a bit stiff this morning but that's expected after the yesterday. Pretty hilly terrain and almost all of it was in thick woods so I'm pleased to have made it. I finished what was supposed to be 2 days work so that's good.

I have been on a lifting forum since 2006 and a couple people there have seen my latest derailment as part of a continuing pattern of weightloss attempt/failure and said so. I have to agree with them as much as it pains me to do so. What is different this tim eis that I am using a reasonable diet and exercise to lose the weight slowly and healthily. What's the same is that when I hit any major snags (in this case injury) that I revert back to bad habits. So the idea is that maybe I need some outside help beyond posting on forums. I intend to try to find a new Dr. that can/will help me out or at least find advice for where to get help. I am back on track and I do see this as a temporary setback, but there is no harm in trying to get some help with making this a true and permanent lifestyle change. To clarify so there is no understanding, I'm not looking for pills or surgery, but some support or counseling so I don't revert to bad habits when I am stressed. I realize that I had substituted exercise for overeating and drinking and when I couldn't exercise I went back to my bad habits.

I don't believe that I mentioned this but I drank while I was hurt and on vacation. I had made it close to 6 months without alcohol and I'm happy to be abstaining again. That is not in the cards as part of my weightloss and health goals and I don't need it once I've hit my maintenance weight either.

Good to hear you're up and about again.
Also a very good thing to being able to say to yourself you need some help, another big step in the right direction!
We all have setbacks, it's part of the process I guess. Overcoming those setbacks creates character.

Hope you can increase your activity and intensity level painlessly pretty soon!

Thank you Guideon, that's very nice to hear.

fast pace walk 30 mins
avg HR 140 which is in the middle of my aerobic zone
1.78 miles

It was my first time to use the GPS watch that my cousin gave to me. It's really awesome. It was so hard not to break in a run. I felt like a dog must feel on a leash. I hope the back is good and I'll walk an hour next time and them sprinkle in a bit of running soon.

Walking fast enough to stay in the higher aerobic ranges is rather awkward.

So Thursday I just went for an easy stroll to see if my back would ease up and it didn't.

Yesterday was a very demanding day in the field and my back and leg were killing me at the end of the day. I was afraid that I would be laid up after yesterday, but this morning the back feels really good. It is sore, but less so than than before the day in the field.

I'm covered in chigger bites today which sucks. I desperatly need to mow my lawn and that hurts my back when I'm not recovering so that might be my only exercise today, but I'll play it by ear. My push mower handle is apparently designed for children and adults of below average height. With controls and safety bar on the handle I have not been able to devise a solution.

Hey Q,

As a few of the others said take this time to relax and chill out a bit :) You'll be back to your normal machine self in no time!

Keep up the good work, and hope you smash the goal in June!

Steve

Thank you Steve. You are so close to your goal. I am so proud of you! At 6' 6' 233.6 you are a skinny mini. I was a kid under 6 feet the last time I weighed that little.

I left it at lawn mowing today. With the grass so high it took nearly 3 hours to finish an it ws hot too. I went to visit my cousin who runs tonight and he got me really excited about running. I'm going to try a Sunday run. I can't imagine it being much harder on the back than Friday's field work or today's mowing.

1st 5K run/walk
53mins 6 secs
147 avg HR
126-147 is my aerobic zone, so I was at my highest avg aerobic HR possible.

I was happy to make the 3.1 miles on my first time running since hurting my back. Both hips were really tight. A few twinges from my back, but no real pain at all. If my back doesn't seize up I'll run again tomorrow. It would have been easier/faster had I not had a heavy spicy dinner beforehand.

It's not really the first 5k, but since I just ran back and forth I didn't know how far I had gone in my hr workouts. 1st official one anyway.

Never mind the pace, you're back at it!
I'm sure you can pick up the pace again once you're really back into it (pun intended :D )

Thanks Gideon. I'll always be slow, but it will certainly improve. My long term goal is to be able to run consistent 30 minute 5ks. Only 23 minutes 6 seconds to go. :leaving: Seriously, I'm still having to walk a lot to keep my heart rate in the aerobic range. Once my fitness improves t the point that I can run a maintained slow pace the numbers will take a big drop.

The back feels tight today, but no real pain. 317.2 this morning.

Slower than yesterday, but that's because it was 15 degrees hotter. High 90s. The heat didn't seem to effect the running but it screwed the recovery time. I did the couch stretches before the run and my hips felt great.

Good to see you back up and about. With your wookie heritage it's probably a little difficult running in the heat, so don't push yourself too hard on those times.

High of 106 here, with a high of 108 tomorrow. It's indoor workout season for me now.
