I thought it would be a great idea to get all of our experience in relation to weight loss into one thread. What I'm thinking is using this thread to post the "best" weight loss tips, at least the ones that have worked for you.

To make this thread easy to read through, please just state your tip or tips, followed by the #?. You can also give a brief explanation of your tip.

I will start it off: :D :D

Tip 1: Write it down!
This may sound very simple, but it is one of the best tips I know. It is ismply not enough to say to yourself, "I want to lose weight." You need to develop a plan on PAPER and follow it through. Start a food or exercise journal, or even join a forum like this one and start chatting with people about your goals.

Tip 2: Drink Lots of Water
Many times we are simply thirsty and misread the cues of our bodies when they demand to be hydrated. We end up eating when we should be drinking water.

Tip 3: Use Humor!
Many times we look at losing weight as this terrible thing; it can actually be quite fun, and even humorous! Talk to people about your struggles and try to inject some humor into your chocolate obsession or your midnight binges! That way, you will lighten up and see that gaining or losing weight isn't the end of the world.

The next person to post can add Tip #4 and so forth..

Tip 4: Become Active
You just can't eat your way to the body of your dreams. You have to get up and move and exercise.

a: Buy an MP3 Player, or the sort
There are some really inexpensive one these days (I love my iPod though :D ), but jamming to some music while exercising makes it seem a whole lot better and the time goes by faster. It was one of the best weight loss investments I have ever mind and I highly reccommend it. Just listen to some tunes you love and you will be suprised on how long you can go.

b: Buy Good Shoes!
Exercising for those that has been fairly inactive will be very hard, discomforting, and in many cases it will hurt! Buy a good pair of sneakers in make the difference. Seriously, go to a special sneaker place, and get a good pair. My feet used to always bother me, until I got my new pair of New Balance. (and what I did was find out exactly what shoe I needed and size, and I ordered them online, a lot cheaper :D )

c: Gym Membership, if you can!
Some gym memberships can be pretty pricey, but it is one of the best investments you can do. They have all the machines and tools you need to lose weight! And most of the people at the gym, in my experience, are very kind and supportive. And everyone there isn't fit. ;)

d: Get a Work Out Buddy
This one may be a little hard to come by, but if you have a work out buddy, you can give both of each other motivation and courage. (it seems to me though, that I've been doing all the motivation for my buddy).

These tips has greatly helped me. Hopefully, it will aid some of you guys. I know its a little expensive, but they are really wise investments.

edit: i'm not trying to advertise at all, but I got my shoes at it was the cheapest place I found on the 'net

the downside to that is - not all gyms have a helpful staff - and their on staff personal trainers are overpriced and pretty much useless - absolutely get a trial membership before signing anything and make sure it's the right place for you - and the hours you want to go there -you actually can workout and aren't waiting in line to use equipment.

I pay a lot of money for my gym and it's not been a good investment at all... and not worth what Ive paid for it...

Pace yourself - you didn't gain 10,15, 25, 100 lbs overnight, it's not goint be lost that way... educate yourself about nutrition and what healthy eating is and stay away from the crash diets that promise quick results in 5 days... you want a lifetime change...

Believe in yoursself that you can do this... somedays are going to be easier than others... but meal by meal you'll get there... patience, grasshopper, patience...

Of course you should try out the gym and make sure its right for you. And i don't do personal trainers, too expensive, heh

Stock the house up with heaps of fruit and veges. If you don't like them now, you prob will grow to. I used to be a very picky eater and struggled to eat most fruit and veges, but now something has changed and I ADORE them. Fantastic snacks.

Also, if you don't know how to already- learn how to cook!

Enjoy food, don't be afraid to try new kinds, and I agree learn how to cook. Cooking something beforehand and popping it in some gladware to microwave at work the next day can save you from those last minute decisions to drive to a fast food place.

So many people have fears of food (I don't, I attribute my weight to my lazy ass and calorie dense foods like soda and chips, never too much of a big eater at meal time) but you have to workout an understanding of it. Why develop anxiety 3 times a day?

Consistency

Of all the things you learn, read, implement or experiment with on here or adopt on your own, consistency is beyond just a 'tip' - it's your success.

If your mindset isn't into this journey every single day, chances are you won't succeed.

Don't use other people/events as an excuse to why you can't lose weight. So what if you have a wedding to attend, a friend invited you out to a movie, mom still cooks unhealthily...

Just about any excuse of that nature can have a solution, you just need to want to find it. Bring your own healthy food, eat something filling and nutritious beforehand so you can skip the food there, whatever.

Your life, your choices.

I swiped this comment from an entry ins teve's diary today - just cause it's so common sense

At the end of the day, it is all very simple. Eat right, lift weights, exercise aerobically, control and monitor, and stay focused on not only what you want, but also why you want it.... and things WILL fall into place. No science about it.

i especially like the why you want it - because in my case, knowing why has made all th difference in the world

Tip #12 (I think)...Look to the big picture - maintaining the loss

Tips 1-11 are all great tools for helping to take the weight off, but IMO the most important (and least planned for/thought out) part is keeping the weight off...we do all this "stuff" with the single minded goal "I want to lose weight" and then the weight comes off, and too often, slowly but surely all the bad habits that led to the weight gain in the first place creep back into our daily lives, and before we know what happened we're standing on the scale in shock going "OMG, I've regained 10, 20, 30 pounds"...then we turn around and do exactly what we did before to lose the weight because we think "I was successful doing xyz plan before".

To be a little bit blunt, the only changes worth bothering to make (again IMO) are ones that you are comfortable enough with and know you are committed enough to, to continue for years to come. The only "successful" weight loss plan is one that you only have to do once.

Tip #13- Proper Nutrition/NOT Diet.

A great tip I learned was proper nutrition and not just calorie cutting. For the longest time I thought the way to loose weight was to stop eating...ha, little did I know I was distroying my metabolism. So now I eat healthy...I cut out things that I knew I could go the rest of my life without...and I vowed to never starve myself again :p

Meditation also helps...it calms me and prepares me for the day.

#14

get a buddie to rock your plan with ya.........misery loves company and it makes it more bearable to endure when someone else is changing and sacrificing with you!!!! You'll think...."gee (insert buddies name here) is not having a ho ho and well neither should I".......yeah it makes it easier!!!

19. Lose weight because YOU want to, not because you want to impress someone else or others are talking you into it. It might sound good to say "I want to lose weight so that so and so will like me", but truth is, if you don't want to lose the weight for yourself first and foremost, you generally wont be able to continue on with it. Outside situations change, but when you want to do something for yourself, you're the only one determining what you do.

20. Tell your friends and family about your goals
it might seem embarrasing at first but who cares, they're your family :) Helps to include some accountability into your routine, there's been a few times when I didn't want to go to the gym or run my runs, but then i think to myself...the next time I see my family they're gonna be like..holy crap you've been workin ur butt off!

21. Keep moving.
Exercise is great, but non-exercise activity counts too! Try standing up while watching TV or other activities. Plan activities that involve something other than sitting.

22. Don't stress over slip-ups.
Okay, you had a piece of cake. Or chocolate, or whatever it is... BIG DEAL. Yes, it might slow you down, but not as much as getting upset over it, and then eating 3 more pieces of cake. Or piling on a quart of ice cream because "Oh well, I messed up my diet anyway."
An extra 400 calories you can make up for in a week. Eating an extra 3000... Just accept that you did it, it's not the end of the world, and move on.

PLAN AHEAD!

Nutrition:
1. Stock your fridge and your desk at work with healthy snacks.
2. Cook double portions of healthy meals so you aren't tempted by fast food or takeout.
3. Make a list before you go to the grocery store and stick with it.
4. Check out menus before you go out to eat and decide what you will order before you get there.

Fitness:
1. Schedule your workouts so you don't miss them.
2. Make a plan for what you will do at the gym (or wherever you work out) and stick to it!
3. Set goals and plan for what you will do after you reach them so you are always motivated.

Set realistic Goals!

If you set crazy goals that seem almost impossible to attain, they probably are...nothing is more disheartening than setting a goal that you will never be able to reach. Once little goals are met make small steps to your ultimate goal.
