The Beginning of the End of my Fat Butt!!

Greetings and salutations!

I'm brand new here, so I know there is nothing remarkable about me yet in terms of weight loss - but I hope to keep track of my weight loss from now until the end of summer, hopefully getting down to the goal - 120lbs from my current 185lbs.

This is doable. A couple of years ago, I lost nearly 100lbs by sticking to a very very strict diet and exercising religously - but I have had an office job for a while now and the sedentary lifestyle has taken it's toll, getting me back up to an unhealthy weight.

My name is jo, I'm a 24 year old female, and I am 185 of fat and no muscle. That is all about to change!

I'm glad I found this community to get that boost I'm sure I'll need :D

Hi! Glad to have you with us :) I'm wondering if your previous "very strict" diet was too strict for the long run and thats why you gained your back?? Not saying it was, just thinking out loud.

Feel free to start a diary...its a great place for you to keep track of your daily calorie and nutritional goals and an easy way for us to check up on you and keep you moving :)

Let me know if you have any questions !!

Hello!

Having a desk job can be hard on the body in many ways.
Not only do you have to be careful not to gain too much fat mass, but you also have to remember to stretch and give your body relief from the pressure of sitting for so long.

Take care of yourself.

Welcome. I second what both Korrie and Emerald have said or asked.

What do you mean by strict though? I am on a strict diet but its not a starvation diet. I am just strict about what i will and won't eat. Is that what you mean or do you mean you hardly ate anything?

Having a desk job is the pits for dieting in my opinion. There was a time when i advocated getting a part time second job like waitressing, cleaning or gardening just so you could get some exercise while you make money. I've done a few of these jobs. They are good for that although of course they have to be combined with a calorie control to get the weight loss.

But i am not telling you to go out and change jobs. You are probably hapypy doing what you're doing.

We need to find some good tips about how to make it easier for people who are dieting in a desk job to keep their appetites under control. If you discover any, please feel free to add them to my best weight loss tips thread on the ON TOPICS branch of the forum.

Meanwhile, i agree with the food diary. Most people here have one in hte right branch. Hope you can find it.

See, yet another reason to hate the 9-to-5ers. :willy_nilly:

Welcome to the forum. You'll find a lot of help here, especially if you look though the sticky threads, browse through some of the advice you'll get in the different sections of the forum and spy, er, read through the journals that people post. The journals are often very helpful, as people post their diets, exercise routines, tips and tricks they've learned during their weight loss, blah blah blah...all of which can be helpful, especially to new members.

Anyway, good luck!!!

Re: Starvation diet

What do you mean by strict though? I am on a strict diet but its not a starvation diet.

This is what a couple of you seem to have assumed! It was a very low caloric diet, the closest thing I would be able to compare it to would be a paleolithic diet. So, meat, raw fruit, raw veggies but also cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs. What I would say I guess is almost nothing processed, or as little as possible? I also tend to lean towards foods that are considered "negative calorie" even though I don't believe in that concept entirely. If I added up the real calorie content it would be around 1200 per day, which is a LOT of food believe it or not. It's just not tasty food.

The reason I stopped eating that way was because of a few things, social pressure probably the biggest factor. Cost, is another - it is more expensive to eat 100% healthy than it is to eat total crap. Also, crap doesn't spoil, but a fridge full of fruit and meat does, quickly.

I will definitley start a diary here and spy on other's techniques :D Thanks for the very warm welcome, everyone!!!

No we are asking, not assuming. I guess no one really talks about strict diets any more so we didn't really know what you meant. But now i see it you mean it was strict in regard to what you can and can't eat essentially.

Yes fruit and vegetables are more expensive than junk food. So is meat but you don't have to eat meat. I don't eat very much of it.

And it is possible to eat a pretty good range of fruit and veg and even meat by choosing things in season and just buy what's at the best prices. Its basically what I do most of the time because i don't have a lot of money to spend on food.

I think its important to make your food delicious. Just this morning i said to my dad that i am enjoying my food so much more on this diet than do when i am not on a diet and eating icecream whenever i want it and a whole load of cheese and other stuff that makes me fat because of the amount i eat of it. Also i think i am spending less money on food now because i am not eating out as much.

if you've got time to shop smartly, you can save a lot of money. The wine i drink every day only costs me $3 a bottle which is pretty damn cheap and its not half bad i must say. Ok it wouldn't satisfy a lot of gourmets.

I buy lavazza coffee which is the best but i am drinking less coffee now so i am saving lots of money on milk i think.

And other things like that.

When it comes to the price of healthy food, people need to change their thinking. The reason that people think that fruits, vegetables, meats and other healthy products are more expensive than junk food is because they just focus on the total price of what they're buying, not the price per serving.

I can walk into my grocery store here and buy a bag of 15-20 oranges for $5. Or, I could spend that $5 on a pint of vanilla ice cream. Which is the better buy?

Nutrition

Depending on what size oranges you buy, there are about 50-75 calories in one orange. In one serving (4 oz) of vanilla ice cream, there are about 150 calories. Oranges contain vitamin C, fiber and they are low in fat. Vanilla ice cream contains calcium, but it is also high in fat, cholesterol and sugar.

The Winner: Oranges

Price Per Serving

A bag of 15-20 oranges (at the grocery store here) costs $5. That means that each orange, individually (one serving), costs $.25-.33. A pint of ice cream costs $5. There are 2 C in one pint and 8 oz in one cup. This means that there are 16 oz of ice cream in one pint. Each serving of ice cream is 4 oz, so there are 4 servings of ice cream in one pint. Each serving in a pint of ice cream costs $1.25.

The Winner: Oranges

Shelf Life

When kept in a refrigerator, oranges can last anywhere between 2 to 3 weeks. Over time, oranges lose their natural sweetness and start to turn bitter. The taste is unpleasant, so most people throw them out when they begin to lose their sweetness. Vanilla ice cream is a frozen product that can be stored in a freezer. Needless to say, frozen foods last longer than refrigerated foods.

The Winner: Vanilla Ice Cream

Adjusted Shelf Life

The adjusted shelf life of a product is the true length of time that the food actually 'sits on the shelf' once it is in your home. For instance, when kept free of moisture, salt has a nearly infinite shelf life. But, people use salt regularly, which means that the salt won't literally last for eternity. A 1 lb box of kosher salt might last for 1-2 months until it is all used up. It's shelf life is nearly all of eternity, but it's adjusted shelf life is 1-2 months.

A bag of 15-20 oranges might last 1 to 2 weeks before each orange has been eaten. People usually don't eat 2 or 3 pieces of the same fruit every day, so a bag of oranges is more likely to last a little while. Vanilla ice cream, on the other hand, is something that most people eat quickly. Even though it is a frozen product, it doesn't mean it will last forever. One serving of vanilla ice cream is 4 oz, which is 1/2 C. Now, let's be honest - who here is eating only 1/2 C of ice cream every time they eat a bowl of ice cream? Hardly anybody. Most people take 2 or 3 scoops of ice cream as one serving for one bowl of ice cream. Or, they might consume the whole pint. So, realistically, you might get one or two servings out of a pint of ice cream. And, most people don't let ice cream sit in their freezer for weeks - rather, days. A bag of oranges might realistically last 1 to 2 weeks, while a pint of vanilla ice cream might not even last the night.

The Winner: Oranges

Not to mention, snack foods often contain high levels of sodium which promote thirst. So, along with that pint of ice cream or bag of Doritos, you'll probably also be paying for a 2-liter of pop or a carton of chocolate milk. Plus, snack foods often make people feel lazy, which can lead to people being unproductive. That lack of productivity can cost people money in many ways; lack of work, lazy spending, bad decisions when buying food, etc.

So, is healthy food really costing anybody 'more money'? Just something to think about.

That's true, obviously oranges are what you should be eating if you have the choice between that and icecream. Living in Canada may be affecting the cost of fresh foods maybe, I unfortunatley can't buy a bag of 20 oranges for $5. It's more around $10-$15, which is still not bad I suppose.

The other thing I find is that eating this way almost eliminates whatever storage you have in terms of cupboard space - everything must be refrigerated. Which means I can have less food in my apartment in general than when I eat processed foods. That also means I can't buy in bulk to get cheaper prices, so yes, it is more expensive. 3 red/orange/green bell peppers is about $8, and that can last 2 days as another example.

Does anyone know at what point a new member can add a signature? I've looked and looked for this info and really would like to add a ticker, it's such a cute idea.

-Edit: nevermind! It showed up :D

HAHAHHA, holy crap!!! For ORANGES?!?!?!

I think we'd also pay that much for most oranges too as its about $5 per kilo at the moment. Though sometiems you can get good deals.

I have never noticed that oranges lose their sweetness with storage.

You can add your signature after 10 posts i think. I know its a stupid rule. But what you can do. I gave up on the ticker in the end. I don't want to have to visit another site just to update my ticker.

Fruit and veg maybe more expensive but you save money because you end up eating less food when you weigh less.

I also have a desk type job, but I try to combat this by getting up and moving around every 15 to 20 minutes. At least you have the right attitude going into it!

It always easier if you have lost the weight before...so you know the things that you have to do to get back on top. Keep coming back to this forum because their is so much useful information you can use to your advantage.

Don't turn back now!

Something I've found that I really think is a great idea and that I've already ordered, is a mini-exercise bike for under my desk at work! I can't remember how I first found out about this a couple weeks ago, but I just ordered the "magnetrainer" since it was the only one I couldn't find bad reviews on - I'm really looking forward to getting seom exercise while I'm stuck at my desk - I don't expect to be huffing and puffing, but it's gotta be better than just sitting and clicking :D
