A glorious spring day! Weight 139.8
Did the Shoe Hill Loop with T this morning, 39 minutes and a fast run on the backstretch (8:40)
Cooled off by walking Charlie - how do you get a cat to lose 5 lbs fast?

Coffee with half & half
6 oz OJ with vitamins
2 eggs, 1 toast

plan for rest of the day
Greek yogurt with berries
apples, kiwi
cashews
big salad with chicken breast, salsa dressing

walk @ mid-day to see if GNC or Walgreens has some lactose free whey for T.

Add one fairly large chocolate chip cookie from NF to the food for the day. I really need to get back off the sugar! (added 4/25/12).

Just took the time to read through your journal, I have to say that march sounds freaking AMAZING. That would be so cool to do.

Hi Max,
THe Death March is a really amazing experience both physically and visually. 20 hours in the Grand Canyon is always good. You should come - I'm trying to talk FF (Todd) into it as well - 2013 - you can both be in fabulous shape by then!

Clouds over night meant it was warm enough this morning (50's) to jump on the trampoline! My inner child is very happy - did flips, swivel hips, helicopters, 360's, 540's, and great big high jumps. Yippee! T put the slackline up too - can't wait to get back on it, but I think it will be a while until I'm hula hooping again. I couldn't do more than stand in place last evening.

Weight 139 this morning
Food planned for the day:
coffee with half & half
2 eggs, 1 toast
Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries
Big salad with chicken breast and salsa
apples, kiwi, grapefruit

nice! a 48 year old woman doing tramp and slack line!! Pictures! I'm so inspired.

Being a jumper we hang with climbers alot. back in the 90's I was in cali, and my drop zone was Perris Valley. Aron Ralston would hang at the dropzone, prior to his incident. He was a slacjk line guru. He could also walk accross glass bottles lines up in a row. What awesome athletes true climbers are. I've never done anything but bust my butt.

Actually at Perris they had a rope between two trees, not a flat line! UNBELIEVABLE what they could do on that thing!

You are very cool Sure!

Thanks! Our first slack line was an old static rope - I liked it a lot except when coming off - major smacks and bruises. One inch webbing is kinder, but the current version is a lot higher off the ground so kind of intimidating getting started. I'm a decent 'average Jill' rock climber - if it's a good day and the climb doesn't overhang too much I can usually get a 5.10 clean. It helps to have been doing it forever (28 years?). I love the total body and mind involvement - think about it, visualize it, do it!

T did the Hardrock 100 and I crewed the first half/paced for the last half a year after Aron lost his arm. He was there pacing another runner and we visited a little. Seemed like a nice guy.

Luv'd your swamp photos!

Thursday 4/26/12 weight 138.4

40 mph winds indicated a gym workout was in order this morning, so I decided to work on cadence aka fast feet. While I haven't signed up for anything, I'm 90% sure I'll do a 5k in May when the Flagstaff summer running series starts. Quicker steps are the key to running faster.

So EFX for 30 minutes/440 calories, cross trainer program #3 at resistance level 7. 1/3 of the way I bumped up the crossramp. Plan was to keep the steps/minute at or above 180 and except for the highest level where I had some intermittant drops into the mid-high 170's, I managed that. Avg HR was 158. I quickly was in the 140's, cranked through the 150's, and ended in the low 160's. Gotta luv how the meter is always pegged since I am so "old"... (Gentle reader, I know the calories on all eliptical machines are whacked - I use the figure as a relative measure of effort. If I am being a slug, the number is lower, if I am really working hard, the number is where it ought to be - about like today or higher. Sadly, the MET and watts figures are ridiculously overstated as well - wish I could really work out at 13.5 MET...)

BOSU with medicine ball for some upper body movement and gentle strength/flexibility work
BOSU lunges - 30/leg
Lunges with 8lb dumbbells - 5 x 8 each leg, then hold and do 8 lifts - 2 sets
2 sets of 8 each leg with rear leg on box
2 sets of 8 pushups on fit ball
2 sets of 8 pushups
15 heel to butt rolls on fitball - can't think what these are called - butt burners?

Food for the day:
2 dippy eggs with 2 toast
coffee with half & half
6 oz juice with vitamins
Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries

Edited to update actual food 4-27/12
1 apple
2 small boiled potatoes
Chipotle burrito bowl
3 chocolate chip cookies

Yea, it's Friday! 4/27/12 weight 139.8

I didn't have a real plan when I got to the gym (it makes T crazy that I don't have a plan or goal for most workouts - isn't basic movement, pushing myself in some way, and a little fun good enough?), but decided when I walked in to do a cardio warm-up followed by weights.

EFX 20 minutes/295 calories - sweat monster!
Leg press 200lbs x 20
Quad extensions, single leg, 35lbs x 3 x 8 each
triceps press 2 x 8 x 120
hamstring cable 2 x 10 x 17.5 (sore muscles from yesterdays lunges and butt buster)
single arm cable rows with twist 60lbs x 12 and 50lbs x 15
side lunges with cable @ 50lbs x 15 x 2
5 assisted pullups with 40lb
3 real pullups (form was not great, but...)
3 slow lowerings from pullup position (pushed off/jumped to get in pullup position)

Food:
coffee with half and half
6 oz juice with vitamins
2 eggs, 1 toast

planned:
salad with chicken/salsa (yesterday's lunch)
yogurt with strawberries
apples, kiwi, and/or grapefruit

Weekend plans - all subject to change

Make soup/stew/chile - undecided but want something with beans!

With fresh snow on the Peaks, considering hiking up the ski resort run with telemark gear and skiing down - will be good quad/glut workout and we didn't ski all winter!

and/or

Load kayaks on the truck, drive to Lees Ferry and paddle up to the dam

Still need to plant the last of the potatoes, onions, garlic and shallots
Finish painting the workshop

Another Tuesday, another night in a hotel... but had an excellent long weekend so I'm not complaining.
Weekend notes:

Saturday - 138.8, 17.4/26.4 %BF, so avg is 21.9
We set off from the house on a hike through the forest. South through the pass to 9150, then turned right onto 770. Saw big herd of elk, at least 40 animals. Antelope too, but only in pairs or threesomes. Did 7 miles total, running the last 3 in 26:50. I really pushed us the first 1.25 miles of the run because it was on rolling, rough terrain (514 from 770) and I wanted to test myself for the upcoming trail 5k. Next mile was 9 minutes from mile marker 5 to 6, then home. Got to work on that 'mental toughness' thing as I find it really hard to make myself run up a hill. I power walked to the crest, then ran all the way home. Total excursion was 1 hr 40. T's pedometer said 700 calories, mine said 525, so I made biscuits to go with T's egg-stravaganza.

Took cats on the walk - saw a rattlesnake! Yikes, just hate seeing them. We shortcutted the SW corner to keep Charlie and Feral away from the snake but still did the loop. T went back to encourage the snake to move on, but couldn't find it. Weirdly enough, he found a dead bull snake - something had eaten the head. He brought it back to show me (ugh!) and we measured it against the yardstick - 39 inches without the head. Bagged the body and put it in the trash.

Did slackline - am back to walking and practiced, but did not get, a successful sitting mount. We took pictures and videos. Worked a little on hula hoop too - not ready for that yet.

Braised a pork loin roast
Made yummy chile (anasazi beans, crushed tomatoes, pulled pork loin, mushrooms, bells, anaheims, jalepeno's, garlic, onions, red cabbage, carrot, zucchini)
Cooked extra beans and made a small batch of refried beans for T

Sunday - 139.0 Whew - tired from yesterday's hike/run. We did the Shoe Hill Loop, but only walking, no running. Saw a few elk and antelope. Worked in the garden, planted the last of the potatoes, shallots, onions, and garlic. Went to town and hauled water (big tank so have 425 gallons - it's like being rich!). Stopped for a treat and brought home Ben and Jerry's pints. Chocolate chip cookie dough for T, red velvet cake for me. What was I thinking? So yummy.

Made pizza on ciabatta bread - canadian bacon and pineapple with jack cheese - T's favorite. We ate one half and put the other in the fridge for leftovers. Watered late in to the evening as everything was really dry despite the rain on Thursday.

Monday - (took a vacation day from work). 139.6 (hmm - ice cream and pizza does not make for a good weigh in!). We went climbing at the Overlook. Gorgeous day, but windy. First day leading this season so we dropped back several grades and took our time getting comfortable placing and pulling pro. After 3 routes and a minor run-in with hornets, we switched to top-roping in order to do some hard routes an exhaust ourselves. Was very pleased to get Amature Hour clean, not sure I've done that before! I felt really strong too - at one point I was struggling with the crack so opted for a couple of face moves that would usually wipe my forearms out, but I managed without difficulty and felt great.

Eggs/toast for breakfast
chicken/spinach sandwich
2 boiled potatoes
handful of cashews
NF hot bar/salad bar for dinner - .97 lb
Small dish of ice cream at home

Super windy this morning and was tired and dried out from a day in the wind and sun. 139.2
Did not do Shoe Hill Loop as planned, just back exercises, stretches, and foam roller to loosen the right achilles tendon. Quick stop by the office, then hit the road.
Geez - no exercise and ate junk!

2 eggs 1 toast, coffee with half and half, 6 oz juice, vitamins
NF tuna sandwhich on soft roll, chocolate chip cookie
jelly beans
slice of homemade pizza
bowl of chile with saltines
2 apples

sounds like a great weekend. Cats on a wlk, how funny, do they have leashes? do they pull or just cruise?
snakes freak me out
Let's see a pic of you on a slack line eh!
Hula hoop. That thing cvan wear me out, I used to play withg my girlies all the time.

Gald to see ya back.

Nope, no cat leashes. We live miles from anywhere on a dirt road, no traffic and nearest neighbor is .5 mile away. The cats are loose during the day and kept in at night (coyotes/owls/bobcats/mt lions for predators - the cats would lose). We made a trail that is about 1/3 mile and 2 of the 3 cats walk it nearly every day, even in snow. They love to go. I'll have to see if I can find the link, I think T uploaded a video of me and Charlie racing on a super windy day.

Best -

Wednesday 5/2/12
Altitude advantage - gotta luv it! Ran in Kingman this morning (3600 ft) on favorite dirt trails and up over a couple of bluffs. Did hill sprints on a very rough section - guessing the climb was about 75 feet over dirt, boulders, and embedded rock (nasty for vehicles from the look of it) and each sprint took about 45 seconds. 4 made up for wimping out and walking on last Saturday's run. Total time out was about 40 minutes. No gizmo's other than tunes so no idea of distance. Cactus are blooming - lovely!

Got to check out of the hotel and hit the road.
