Supermarkets Want You Fat!

Marketing marketing marketing

Love the informative clips! Really nicely done.

The marketing behind supermarket layouts (and Ikea layouts and Home Depot layouts and casino layouts and ...) are all focused on one thing - make money! Lots and lots of money. And the best way to do that in a food store is for them to get you to buy stuff you don't need.

If you want really effective (aggravating, but effective) marketing, check out what the fast food places do. I seem to remember Burger King had this big promotion several years ago that consisted of only the following words:

I GOT MINE, DID YOU GET YOURS?

It was targeted to kids' toys, and I could just imagine how kids who could read would clamor to "get theirs".

I've chosen to take advantage of all these blatant marketing methods by educating my kids about them...and whenever we go shopping, I'll ask them, okay, what does the management want you to do now and are their methods effective? It's amazing how many marketing ploys they can now pick up on.

Enjoy,

Barbara

Cute. I like the "If it's says it's healthy on the packaging, it means it isn't"! So true.

I hadn't thought of it before, but it fits so well with the "pick your weak spot, pretend the opposite and market that" style of advertisement.
