Super Secret Exercise Tip!

Morning everyone,

Well, my kids had a sleepover at our house today, and so my exercise room (guest room) was in use. That meant I couldn't retreat to my DVDs and workout videos!

So instead, I put on the TV and decided, hmmmm, let's do some karate kick drills. Nice, basic, easy stuff - 100 kicks on each leg including

Front kicks
Roundhouse kicks
Crescent kicks
Ax kicks

What really surprised me (and now that I know it, I wonder why I have never read about it online) was the amount of sweat the above activity produced - my heart rate was 'way up there!

And this wasn't a workout DVD, nor a VHS tape, nor was I following anything on the TV (except for reading how Fluidity "poofs away the love handles" which made me snort)... I was simply doing basic common sense exercises (for martial arts, that is).

It took me 45 minutes to complete my 800 kicks (100 on each leg). Not only did I work out, but I also practiced my martial arts. Two benefits for the price of one!

Which gets me to my current thought. My super-secret exercise tip is this - when life throws you a curve ball and you can't do your usual workout, be creative! Sometimes simple things done again and again can really work up a sweat for you...and help increase your fitness as well.

Have a great Sunday,

Barbara

Speaking of being creative...

Hi all,

Just got back from the gym and realized another creative exercise tip. I was on the wondrous Precor 561 elliptical thingee (Oooo I want one of those for home!) and decided to try using it without holding onto the handles, ie, balancing while striding.

That worked out well, my heartrate seemed steady at around 140.

Then I figured, let's be wild and crazy and start throwing reverse punches (karate move), one after another. That got my heart rate up to and holding at 155.

Thus, if you get bored holding onto the bars on the elliptical, you can opt to do something else with your hands - reverse punches, blocking drills, etc. It definitely helps with balance.

Enjoy,

Barbara

oh those sound like good ideas. I recall years ago i was trying to get in shape and i would just put music on and do kicks and air boxing etc. No training needed, but i do recall loosing a fair bit of weight at the time.

Good tips, Barbara. Sometimes I think we forget that we don't always have to be told how to move and exactly what to do. We need to get creative, like you said! :)

Whoopsie

Morning,

you have 8 legs???

Hee hee, my mistake.

I do 100 front kicks on the left leg and 100 front kicks on the right leg.

Then I do 100 roundhouse kicks on the left leg and 100 roundhouse kicks on the right leg.

Then I do 100 crescent kicks on the left leg and 100 crescent kicks on the right leg.

Then I do 100 axe kicks on the left leg and 100 axe kicks on the right leg.

Total - 800 kicks.

Enjoy,

Barbara
