Sumo dropping pounds by the punch

Hey living in Japan here and just finished watching a tv expose on a retired Sumo wrestler that wanted to drop the pounds!
This guy was huge, not just fat but a huge dude, well over 6ft, I couldn't read the Kanji for his name, and mised the start so not sure who he is, but the doco showed him over 3 months, training daily.
Now I dont know if the techniques they were using were detrimental to his health or not, but man did he ever burn some fat!
every day he worked out with a boxing coach, wrapped up in a tracksuit, the room was kept real warm and he just went from heavy bag, to padded gloves, to circle hoping side step things, then back round from the heavy bag again, workout started at 45mins, by the end of the 3 months he was on 4hrs or so, between every round he would have some sports drink that kept him hydrated, but over 3 months he dropped 55lbs, pretty amazing stuff really.
For someone to spend so many years from childhood trying to get fatter, to be able to totally commit to doing the complete opposite is an example to be followed.
Sumo Sama who ever you are BRavo!!

I'm just curious, but when you say "wrapped in a tracksuit" are you talking about those sauna suits?

Yeah I think it may have been, but hard to tell, my japanese is pretty fluent, but on tv they use the super polite form when dealing with sumo, they have an elated social standing so it was hard to tell.

Well I was just a bit curious, because you said you weren't sure if their "techniques were detrimental to his health or not" and well... I've heard about a LOT of health concerns with sauna suits.

Oh and I'm very aware of social standing when it comes to sumotori... My uncle is Chad Rowan a.k.a Akebono Taro. ;)

Far out!
Well then I met your uncle once!
Yeah I have heard about those suits also, though only briefly, to me it is a silly idea to overheat the body to loose weight, pretty conventional with my weight loss systems, was married for 6 years until Jan this year didnt realise how much weight I was carring, but through constant activity I have dropped down to my desired weight and seems to maintain well, for me the part that I liked in the story was the effort and will power the man was exerting, I admire that greatly.:jump:

Yah... he's awesome. :D

If you don't mind me asking... how much did you lose? Also, are you a certified personal trainer there in Japan? Sorry if I sound so damn nosey, but I find this to be fascinating... well, with you living in Japan and how different Japanese diet is compared to American diet that is.

Oh believe me, I'm huge on admirable stories. However, that's where culture comes into play. Personally speaking, being that sumotori are considered top notch celebrities in Japan, it's so much easier to "pay for fitness advice/ support." I'm more of the type of girl who finds admiration in your Regular Joe who was raised on fast food since he was a kid, because it was all his parents could afford and years upon years later he decides to change his lifestyle by whatever means. A sumotori can have his personal chef prepare him a healthy meal of steamed saba, chanpur?, and sashimi. On the other hand, Regular Joe, has to read labels, make sure what he's preparing is healthy, etc etc. IMO I have the upmost respect for the latter. :D

Wishing you the best....

to me it is a silly idea to overheat the body to loose weight,

Its a silly idea because it doesn't work. The human body is extremely well versed in regulating its own temperature. If it wasn't, then the above might work. However, exercising in a hot room VS a more "comfy" room temperature equates to a marginal difference in overall calorie expenditure.

hi Sheryl,
I went from 85kg I am only 5'10" to 71kg in 3months, I didnt try any special diets or anything, just ate right, and in propotion to my activity on that day.
My ex is a great woman we are still friends, but every day there was a meal prepared for me, breakfast noon and night, a sign of her affection. but for me I was so used to eating only when hungry for so long that I think I just couldnt process the change in diet hence the weight gain.
No I am not a trainer, training for me is more of a hobby, an interest, I have helped a few friends lose weight in the last 6 months, through encouragement, gym budding and mostly by getting them to use their free time to be active rather than relax, and through this I am developing my own weightloss theroies.
I dont every offer my advice as anything other than sharing what I have found within myself with others.
The main focus I am aiming at with my study is maintained weightloss, I deeply hate the idea of crash dieting, or bursts of training to get in shape for the summer, I think it promotes the wong mind set for a healthy life. I am also not a huge advocte of the gym fad, I think it is a useful tool, but I dont believe in it as base for overall fitness. Again these are personal opinions.
Once when I was at my heaviest, I was in the gym with my friend, with whom I have set up my website, he has been a bodybuilder for 15 years, and he was helping me do wide grip chin ups using the wrist straps, I was have a hell of a time as it is not a motion I use often in my day to day life, I was telling my mate that I wa having trouble maintaining my grip at the same time as focusing on the pull up, and that the straps really helped with that, so thanks for the idea etc, when one "gym guy" eavesdropping remarked "well if you had some functional strength" (a comment also made on another forum while sharing the story with a person with the same difficulties). My first thought is how is this functional? I mean I can duck dive 15ft surf and hold onto my biggest board in that vortex, to me that seems more functional...sorry I m kinda rambling, but my point is, I think the key to fitness is in a multitude of activities spread through out the coarse of each day, from say chopping your own fire wood to riding a bike to work, not simply the 1-2 hr in the gym a few days a week training muscles in a regimented fashion.
I initially had this idea when thinking back to how in shape I felt in the army, and what got me there, tonnes of activity, of which none of it involved a gym, push ups sit ups sure, but mainly I believe constant activity.

I agree with you on the point of the regular Joe, however to me anyone who makes the choice to reform their lives from one extreme to another in a positive way has my respect, from a junky getting clean, to a lazy person getting organized, it all takes effort and a positive attitude and I respect that.

In reguards to the heat training, yeah I dont believe it is a good idea at all, re-reading my post I can see how that it may have looked like that was the point I was making, but the real point was the change in mindset, as that is where all progress begins!

just my 2 cents...hehe

I hear you there. I guess I just have more in common with the Average Joe as opposed to a sumotori. haha Although I'd like to toot my own horn in saying, I have celebrity-like style. haha jk By the way, congrats with losing ~30lbs.

Okay, I took a look at your website.... and well, I don't mean to sound like a bitch or anything, but your website needs a spellcheck for sure. IMO it's difficult to take someone serious and believe wholeheartedly that they know what they're talking about when you see the words "suppliment" instead of "supplement" and "loose" in place of the proper word "lose." Sorry... I'm a stickler for that kind of crap. haha!

Yup.... my thoughts with Trevor. My main reason for actually sending the first post was because I was interested in your take on the whole detrimental techniques being used by said sumotori and well, since you do have the word "inform" in your name... you left yourself wide open. haha

Thanks Sheryl,
No you dont sound like a bitch, truth is I am new at web authoring and doing the tech side solo, so I actually love when people point out where there are problems, give me a chance to go and fix them, I find with my own work I tend to speed check it, as it is all in my head, very bad habit in this case, I have a fiction novel in the editing phase right now, think I am giving my editor grey hairs! if she doesnt kill me first it may make it to full publication mid next year! hehe:jump:
Thanks again

p.s when I drop letters in words that is due to an over used keyboard,I do all my writing on my laptop, is in dire need of a new laptop!

Sweet I love storie like this,
Actully just saw a kelly slater DVD called letting go, how he won the 7th world title, and how mindet is everything, so easy to just keep in one mindset and blow so many oppotunities along the way!

Inform team would you mind positng before and after pictures please? I'm exactly the same height and build and I would like a few pointers in how you lost it. The pictures would provide a great visual motivational boost.

Also, are you mixed asian and white? same goes to Ms Ghetto

I'm part Chinese along with a WHOLE lot of other things. haha You can check it out if you click my profile. I was getting tired being asked the same question over and over, "What ethnicity are you?" It just makes it easier for everyone, including myself. haha

Akebono is your uncle? I played as him in a skit for his wedding video way back when I was in high-school! We had to play some basketball... neat stuff. I also saw him at the local gym a few times too. By chance, do you have a 1/2 Japanese cousin named Maiko?

Talk about a small world. haha Hmmm not all too sure about a Maiko... On my Hawaiian side we have TONS of family in Waimanalo, so yah... keeping track of aunties, uncles, cousins, etc.. can be a challenge and a half. hahaa!

here are some before after pics, not the best examples but it is all I got of me
Nope not asian at all, I think I am a mix of french, native american from a few generations back, and anglo british.
For me the best inspiration I found was to get in better shape and improve my surfing! by dropping them kg I was able to get into waves early and throw bigger turns without loosing my balance, once I lost a few kgs I felt great, so that inspired me to keep going til I hit my current weight!
