Suggestions on exercising

Hey, I'm Jessie, just joined and was hoping ya'll could give me some ideas on exercise. I am trying to lose around 25-35 lbs. Last summer I lost about 15 lbs. in 2 1/2 months by eating 1200 calories and walking 30 minutes an average of 3-4 days a week, but gained back the weight and obviously want to lose it again! :) So, currently I am at 174 lbs. :( and am looking for exercising ideas.

Walking gets a little boring after awhile, and I don't fell super safe in the neighborhood anyways, so I'd like to find something else.

I hate running, but I may start doing it to get my cardio up.

I'll be moving into an apartment complex soon that has a decent fitness center with the standard stuff like treadmills and cycling and whatnot.

I've tried Pilates but I didn't really see a result in the few weeks I had done it daily.

So... I apologize for rambling, but was curious if there were any suggestions, preferably with spending the least amount of money as possible.

Thank you.

First of all WELCOME. If you don't feel safe outdoors then find a step video or something like that, Richard simmons work pretty well, even though I despise the guy, and his videos will keep you somewhat entertained while you workout. I recommend just joining a gym. Some can be as little as 20 bucks a month which is not bad at all. And I highly recommend some kind of weight training. I would recommend jogging as opposed to walking but do whatever you feel is good for you, and remember your diet should not be starving you, if you eat too little it eats away muscle just as much as fat. Even try jumproping. For any cardio I wouldn't do any less than 20 minutes. Whatever you do, do not go on the atkins diet. Your diet should consist of 25% fat, 30% protein, and 45% carbs, or something close to that. And it takes a long time to make a total body change, a few weeks is not enough to notice much difference, so if you get a workout figured out then stick to it for at least 6 weeks, and if you don't see any change, then find another type of workout. Good luck to ya and make sure you drink lots of water:)

Thank you errtu for the welcome and advice. No worries, I would never starve myself. On the 1200 calorie diet, I just ate more frequently of smaller proportions which worked really well. Only reason I don't want to join a gym just now is because we're going to be moving within the next month to an apartment that has a fitness center that I can use. So I want to see that and try it out before I join up a gym.

What would you recommend for getting tighter abs and losing that "flab" on the sides of hips?? That is a big thing for me.

Thank you again errtu.

well for tighter abs, those are made just about 100% in the kitchen. If you do crunches and stuff like that it'll make them stronger and theyll show better when the fat is burned off. If you dont know how much of each macronutrients your getting go to and type in an average day for eating with you. Make sure all your macronutrients are in good proportions. I wouldn't recommend eating any carbs within 4 hours of going to bed. I just got my girlfriend A book called body sculpting bible for women, I believe it was like 13 bucks, It has daily meal plans, workouts, stretches, and tons more stuff, and its a pretty thick book. Just do the cardio thing, and make sure your sweating and pushing yourself as far as you can go in those excercises, after a workout you should be really tired and whatever muscles you worked should be able to barely lift anything. After I do a bike workout I can barely make it up the stairs. And drink half your body weight in ounces, at least. Just remember with your workouts, what you put in is what you get out of it. If your at your new fitness center and watching tv and barely moving on the treadmill, your not going to lose much weight. Cardio/lifting weights is all about conditioning, the harder you push yourself the faster your body will react and change to adapt to the different stimulus you give it. I hope I gave you at least one good piece of info and at least check into that book, its great, another one thats supposed to be good is called body for life, but its supposedly very strict and takes a lot of discipline to follow it. Good luck and sorry if I didn't answer any questions.

I think errtu had some great suggestions. Just do whatever is comfortable to you. The more you push yourself the better results you see just don't overdo it. There is also plenty of stuff you can do at home. I prefer some kind of video so I can make sure I'm doing it correct. Any type of movement burns calories and you need to put in some kind of strength (weights or toning.) To tighten your muscles while loseing fat. And muscle also burns more calories!! Anyway hope this might help!

Errtu that helps a lot! I'll check out that book when I have the money.

And thank you for the sugesstions, both of ya. It helps to have some confident and motivating answers, versus guesses. :)
