Suggested Rpm's On Bike/elliptical Machine?

Hi everyone,

In regards to the stationary bike and the elliptical machine....has anyone heard of a suggested # of RPM's on these machines? Someone told me to keep the RPM's at 82 or above on the stationary bike, and at 55 or above for the elliptical.

Any input or thoughts on this information?

Thanks all,
bren =)

The best thing to do is find an rpm that keeps you in the right zone for your heartrate. Same goes for the ammount of resistance on the bike or xtrainer.

RPM doesn't mean anything unless, like NBS said, you have the resistance to bump you into your target HR.

The primary concern, like everyone said on here, is to keep your heart rate up. This could mean a number of things for people like increasing the rpm or resistance on the machine. The numbers that were suggested to you could be too much or too little for a person of your size. Of course, if you weigh 300 pounds, the rpm/resistance to get your hr up would be a lot different than someone who is 120 pounds.

So the best thing to do is experiment and see what resistance / rpm you feel best in so that you hit your training hr.

If you don't have a heart rate monitor, I understand that if you're working hard enough that you can't speak a complete sentence without taking a breath, then you're at or close to 85%. Backing off a little from that work effort should put you around 80%.
