I am a 67 year old man, with heart issues and diabetes. I had a double bypass in 1995, and then 2 years ago had to have 2 stents. After the stents I had a period of cardiac "rehab" where you go to the hospital 3 times a week for "directed" exercise. For whatever reason, after rehab I pretty much quit exercising, and really quit trying on my diabetes. I gained weight and got up to 203lbs. Not fat, but I had a belly and it bothered me to go up the stairs. I'm 5'11" tall. So, I still work 5 days a week and at the beginning of Feb. we started a weight loss contest at work. I guess that started my motivation, and I'm planning on staying at it from here on out.
I started with "intermittent fasting" where you give yourself 8 hours a day to eat, and then don't eat for 16 hours. It took no time to get in the habit. I start eating at 12 noon, and don't have an another bite after 8pm. At the same time, I started to eat "clean" Lot's of fruits and vegetables, and only lean meats and fish. I've never been a soda pop drinker. I stopped sugar and breads. I quit eating when I felt full. I used to be an off road motorcycle racer, so I know how to exercise, I just hadn't for years. I dusted off my old Nordic Track ski machine, and dug my weight bench out of storage. I "track" 30 mins a day, do about 80 Ab reps a day and lift weights every other day (upper body one day lower body the next and then 1 day off lifting. It has really worked well. I now weight 175lbs, my belly is flat, my 34" waist pants are loose, I run up the stairs with no problem. I'm sleeping really well, and feel full of energy. I feel like a fool for waiting so long, I forgot how good it feels to be in shape. I'm not entirely where I want to be, but I can see it from where I'm standing. I am sold on intermittent fasting, there are many "Ted Talks" on youtube, check it out. I guess I need to start eating a little more because I want to "maintain", not lose anymore. But I believe I will intermittent fast from here on out.
