Stupidest Question Ever Asked on These Boards

Hello all! So, yeah, I'm a 26 year old male. I am around 5'8 and i way around 195 lbs. For the longest time I did not think of myself as overweight at all, only recently has it dawned upon me just how large I have become. I would like to lose at least 25 pounds, but I am unsure how. Motivation is not an issue as I have no trouble eating healthy, staying focused on my goales/working out...the big question is of the calorire counting variety. And here comes the stupidest question probably ever asked on these boards: with calories in/calories out...am I assume that say I eat 1000 calories a day, I would have to burn at least 1100 calories to notice any sort of difference? I have been running on a treadmill 5 days a week for two weeks now and, wow, 400 calories for me(if the machine is to be believed) is around 3 miles. Now I do this twice a day, so I'm burning 800 calories...300 short of 1100. So does that mean I am not burning any fat? If this is true, I have to admit I am discouraged. I will continue eating healthy, and working out at my own pace, but I don't see how I can be expected to run more than 6 miles a day if I want to drop some lbs.

Now, hopefully I have this whole thing convoluted here and I am just confused. Please excuse my ignorance on the issue. Any replies would be greatly, greatly appreciated. :)

Hi there,
Your body needs a certain amount of calories just to survive, keep breathing, keep your heart beating etc. That amount is expended on top of any calories you burn during exercise. Im sure more knowledgeable people then me will tell you how to figure out how many calories your body is using up :)
So as long as you consume less calories then you are expending just staying alive + exercise you will lose weight.
Anyways, 1000 cals a day sounds awfully low for a 26 year old guy.
Hope that helps!

Go to the harsh truth section on here and ask the pros for an estimate for a healthy caloric deficit -- make sure to list your age, height, weight, and goal like you did here. 1000 cal per day would put you in what the pros around here call "starvation mode" and would end up being counter productive to your goal.

Good luck and welcome to the forum :)

LOL!

calroies have a use bud! haha
if this were the case, eating would be unneeded! haha, ur going too hard on the workouts, calm it down ur not getting enough energy to survive

If it helps put things in perspective at all, my maintenance at current weight is ~2000 cal per day, so I am trying to hit 1600 as my deficit...
