Stretching an injury

The owner of my fitness center told me today that he tweaked his back lifting some chairs this AM and was in quite a bit of pain. The guy is a former football lineman so he is very strong but has developed a large gut over the years. I've been telling him the benefits of core training but without a diet change I can see why he's injured. I may have been the last person to ask ---but.
Here is what I told him purely from my own experience dealing with similar injuries when he told me his first coarse of action was to stretch. "Get some ice on the affected area and rest with correct posture. Stretching right after an injury doesn't seem to help and for me only makes it worse."
What is the consensus of the group? I know it depends on if it is muscular or vertebrae but do you folks recommend stretching right away ice and rest heavy self medicating or some other form of relief within the first day of an injury.

What Type of Stretch?

I have recently discovered the benefit of stretching before and after exercise. For so long I have just wanted to get on and workout.

I have been focusing on developmental stretches which I found on fitness-central.co.uk

Very impressed!

yeah but stretching in general is different to trying to ease the pain of an injury by stretching it. I would say, if it hurts when you stretch it, don't do it. Stretching after every workout definantly helps prevent injury.

If its an injury and it hurts then you should not stretch it. You already over stretched it and thats why it's now strained, pulled, or torn.

The most important aspect is rest. You should avoid straining that muscle if at all possible, and as you start to recover, start using it as you would normally.
