Strange recovery rate!

Just got back form the gym today.

When i was there on the bench press i normally do 5 x 5 on 50kg, but today i decided to push myself. after i did my 5 x 5 i waited a bit....

Then did 5 x 55kg
then 5 x 60kg
then 5 65 Kg
then 5 x 70Kg
then tried to do 5 x 75KG and failed on 3

My point is, is when i do the 5 x the last one is always a struggle. I have to wait at least 90 seconds before i can attempt the next 5.

I really don't understand how this recovery thing works.

Does that mean i should change my original 5 x 5 on 50kG TO 5 x 5 on 70kg (or even 75kg)

I always do some warm up ones, normally 10 x 3 on 40kg

I find it strange, very strange. then i went on the bike to do some cardio. when i finished on the bike i managed to do 5 x 2 on 75kg again (Failed on 4 on second set).

Can someone please tell me how the human body adapts for this and what weights i should be lifting

weight training is anaerobic, meaning you need that rest period after a set to get oxygen back into the blood, so your muscles can charge back up for the next set.

90 secs is a perfectly reasonable recovery period on a 5x5 program IMO.

So should i up my weights next time to 70 kg and do 5 x 5? or even try 5 x 5 on 75 - 80kg? should i push myself to the maximum so i feel beaten up after my 5 x 5?

If you're going for purely strength I've heard of 5minutes+ of resting time to let your CNS and junctions get refueled..

I'm going for strength and defined muscles.

I tried doing 5 X 6 the other day on 70KG and i felt awesome afterwards. However i failed on the last 2 reps. My muscles would literally not work. I was determined to do them but i guess that if my body didn't want to i had no choice.

then its strenght, for str, atleast 2-3 mins between sets. 90 sec is more of a hyp recovery time. after 3 mins most of the ATP and stuff have gotten back, after that its just the CNS, i sometimes wait more than 3 mins if i know the next set is gonna be very though!
