Started at 180.. Stuck at 145

So here's my story. I'm 5'3 and 22, and most of my life I was always overweight.. well it hit an all time high this past january of stepping on the scale and seeing I was 180 pounds. I realized something had to be done about it, and so I started lightly just going on my treadmill every day, and eating healthier. Slowly the weight all started coming off and by June I was 160 pounds.

In April I joined kickboxing, it's a 1 hour class that I do 4-5 times a week, I don't know where I would be without it.

The problem then started when I was having terrible pains in my stomach and severe acid reflux, and I've never had this happen before. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with GERD and Barretts Esophagus, put on medication and that still wasn't helping. I continued my dieting and hit 150 pounds in September.

I went back to the doctor then and was told i was allergic to Gluten (apparantly Barretts can cause that). So that's when I had to monitor my diet even more. Since then I have been stuck at 145 pounds and the scale refuses to go any lower, (i had my mom go on to make sure it wasn't broken)

I still go to kickboxing more then ever, I joined the gym too so I could get in some extra cardio before going to that class.

Some days i'll look in the mirror and think "I've done all of this for so long, and nothing has changed" .. and then I see people posting before and after photos, and I wish I could look like them. One day at a time.

- August 2010. 180 pounds.

- July 2011, 156 pounds.

- October 2011. 145 pounds.

Hi meggie! what you have accomplished so far is amazing!! & you look awesome! Being at the same weight when you want to lose more weight can be discouraging but don't give up!! I started my weight loss journey at 156 pounds and was stuck at 135 pounds for several months. I too worked out about 4-5 times a week, took up some exercise classes at my gym including kickboxing, and ate very healthy but my scale would not budge. A few weeks ago i talked to one of my friends who is into fitness to try and see what i was doing wrong and she said that my body is probably getting used to my exercise routine and to switch it up. So i began doing different exercises, taking up different classes, and using different weights and resistance to confuse my body. Surely enough my weight began to drop and i am currently at 132 pounds. So if you have a routine you follow at the gym or where ever, try maybe making a few changes and switch it up. Hope this advice helps!! :) hang in there!

That's awesome that you were able to break through your plateau. For months I was only doing kickboxing, then I did read to switch it up, so that's why I added in going to the gym to do extra cardio about 3 1/2 weeks ago, and I have been consistent with going. I keep telling myself one day the scale will get lower!.. Thanks for the advice, i'll try adding in different machines and see if that helps

Hi meggie! Welcome! :)

Congrats on everything you've accomplished! You look beautiful and it's awesome how much you've lost so far :)

Recently, I've been reading of several users that have hit a bit of a wall when it comes to seeing good weight loss numbers. A suggestion was made that maybe it has to due with the weather change. When it gets colder, our bodies tend to want to store energy more actively as it goes back to our survival mode days back when we were neanderthals. That's the theory anyway :)

But, like I posted just recently, the best way to break through any plateau and insure success is to never quit. Yes, tweaking a few things here and there may be necessary, but the most important thing above all else is to never stop! Ever!

Personally, that's the mindset I've always kept and I just recently started breaking out of a 2-month long plateau I was stuck in. I tweaked my calorie intake a smidge, but I kept up with my daily routine every day!

Just don't lose your focus and you'll be just fine!

Good luck! :)

woa good job ! You are very, very pretty. Totally my type ;)

(sorry I don't mean to be creepy, haha)

Thanks Frogged!.. I actually put up post it's everywhere with all these motivational sayings on them (i know it's nutty) but i'm determined not to give up!

AReally nice job meggie, you look really beautiful and nice going on not losing motivation. I haven't hit a platue yet but there are always times when I feel like just giving up and go eat whatever I want. But than I just tell myself " there is no way I am going back to the way I was before".

Thanks! it's really hard sometimes not to lose it though, there are days when I feel like nothings changed and just wanna give it all up. great job on your weight loss too!

AI try not to lose it to, I lost over 20kg already but unit that gut gies away, everytime I look in the mirror I feel like I did nothing even though I can feel the changes. We just have to keep focus on our goals and keep moving forward.

Hi Meggie, like everyone else has already said - be proud in what you've already achieved and keep working towards your goals.

If I could make a suggestion - rather than go to the gym and increase your cardio, go to the gym and increase your weight workouts. Your weight workouts should hit all the main big muscle groups - back, chest, legs, and core and if these exercises are done with little rest in between, they will also improve your aerobic conditioning (cardio workout, without using cardio machines).

Just as a little explanation on the reason for wanting to build muscle. The rate at which you burn calories throughout the day is called your metabolic rate. There are certain things you can do to increase your metabolic rate. Exercise is one of these things. Your choice of exercise, then becomes a factor. You can do cardio which increases your metabolic rate during the period of time in which you are exercising - great! But even better, if you do exercises aimed at increasing muscle mass, you will not only increase your metabolic rate during your workout time, but also when you are at rest (increased muscle mass, even resting ones = increased metabolism).

By the way, you can increase muscle mass without looking like a body builder.

If you want some more info, I'd be happy to send you a link to my website, its got free workouts to help get your body out of the cardio rut and into fat burning mode.

Hope this helps. With love, Nikki.

You are so beautiful! That is an amazing transformation. Plus, it is inspiring for me to see as 145 is my first "goal" marker that I hope to get to soon. To see someone there (and who is my age and about my height) and see how great you look is so encouraging so I thank you for posting :)

Best wishes on breaking through, I know it's frustrating.

Omg you look stunning! Don't discredit the amount of hard work you have put into this! I think we are over critical of ourselves and tend to pick out all the flaws instead of focusing on the good and the fact that you had the will power and perserverence to lose 35 LBS ! patience my dear, you're going to reach your goal :) in the meantime you look awesome and the fact that you are working out and creating a strong fit body for yourself is awesome.

You look seriously impressive! There is such a difference in your before and after pics, you should be so proud! :hurray:

I just wanted to say that I have GERD too, I was diagnosed with it 2 years ago, but have had it all my life. Mine is caused by a Hiatus Hernia, that I was born with, and due to the fact that I've had it so long it's safe to say my insides have been through a lot, haha. When I was 13 I developed bulimia which just worsened my disorder and caused more pain than anything, at 15 I stopped and have improved so much! I'm on medication too but to be honest I've always found that simple little tricks (like drinking some milk when my stomach hurts, not overdoing it with acidic foods and drink e.g. orange juice) benefit me more than any medication.

I have lost weight before and I have to admit it was probably the best thing for my stomach. I was carrying less weight and eating smaller portions so my reflux improved dramatically and more importantly it stopped affecting me while exercising. The more weight I had on the more problamatic my hernia was with things like running.

You are doing such a good job already and look beyond fabulous but I just wanted you to know some of the health benefits I got when I lost weight! I think I have to say this again for emphasis but You should be so proud of yourself
