Squat/military press substitutes?

I have facet syndrome (among other back issues) and my chiropractor has instructed me to stay away from squats and other weight exercises where the weight is held high (power cleans, military presses, squats, etc.) at least until my next evaluation (Thursday).

I was planning to go with the Rippetoe starting strength routine and try to sub out the squats/presses/power cleans if there are any adequate substitutes. If that doesn't work, I suppose I'll have to use a different routine.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.

If your saying 'weight held high' couldnt your do Dumbbell squats/lunges? Or Seated Dumbell OH Press?

My friend is in a similar situation. He can't squat or do military because of a neck injury from an accident.

We started doing front squats for him and this worked. I think DB squats would work also.

In the place of military, we have him doing lateral raises, but this eliminates the tricep and weakens his routine...

Injuries suck.
