Squat issues (knees)

I tried to do a few squats today, watching the videos beforehand. I didn't use weight to start off. My knees were killing me. What am I probably doing wrong? (I also have flexibility issues, but I knew that already.)

If it matters, my family has a history of knee problems, but I always thought I dodged that bullet.

Perhaps Steve can help you with this. Its difficult to tell if you did something wrong without actually seeing what you are doing. Do your knees hurt with any other movements?

If you're knees are hurting, I'd bet there's a problem with your form...

At what point does your knee begin to hurt? beginning, middle, end of the movement? or afterwards

You're also better off without using weights until you've got the form down pat completely.. no need to further complicate it...

You are going to a gym, can you get one of the people who work there to spend a few minutes with you and ask them to watch what you're doing - to make sure that you're doing it correctly.

One thing you might try, to see if it is the squat movement that's the problem - is take a stability ball -and put it between your back and the wall -and do a squat that way... with the ball as a guide - it helps to take some of the strain off the body and see how your knees do that way...

I don't know if my knees hurt with any other movements. With squatting, they hurt when I'm actually squatting, and it goes away when I stand back up.

My gym charges $50 per session to get help. I doubt they'd help you for free if they're already charging.

then it's probably related to your form...

Try doing a wall squat with the ball first or just doing a sit against the wall without a ball.. .and see how your knees do...

I'll try the wall first. I'm pretty sure that's what my trainer had me doing a few years ago when I had a trainer.

I recommend squatting onto a box, focusing on driving up through the heels. This has helped my form tremendously, and now I always use a box :)
