squat alternatives ?

I may have missed it when eric said he can squat 500 lbs, but it takes some serious doing to work up to a 500 lb squat, by the time that happens, I'm sure eric will be lifting that serious iron in a serious gym. A barbell with ~135 is fine for front squats. And we don't know if this guy is in his backyard or carpet. Plus, having the load in front is what he's going to be doing when he carries his wife. Although I'd like to see someone OH carry someone up a flight of stairs.

softer steel dents, hardened chip. Noone would use hardened in plates for two resoons:
1. It very fragile and cracks easily
2. It costs way way more

Okay we're getting no where with this. His question was answered and I've spoken my peace but your mind is closed. Me putting a number in my post means I was looking to brag about how much I squat? If you think that's what I'm about, then here; I can squat 45lbs, happy?

yes you did but ok babe

I never said plates were made from hardend steel. But they are not made from soft steel. Soft steel is actually a type of steel.

There is litterally hundreds of steel types Lewis, and plates are made of a softer kind.
Does a sledgehammer shatter/crack when you swing it at a concrete block?
No it doesnt, nor does a weight plate since its made to withstand impact.

Perhaps you can explain to me the reason why I've seen 3 plates crack and shatter in the last year if they're made to withstand impact.

But gosh...you made Mreik cry. You're such a jerk.

Mreik - you were right.

Markus - from now on you shall be known as The Tangent King.
Sorry I didnt no dere was that many ckinds of steel. I just thort der was soft steel, hard steel, really hard steel and 'other'.

Evo, maybe your plates is made in China from recycled tincans? I dunno. Never seen or even heard of it happen - If it did, that company would have a hard time getting contracts with gyms again.

^^ The Weider plates I've had in the past also chipped and cracked. They weren't made in china. Sure they weren't the expensive rubbers but they are reputable.

Probably 90% of the weights in gyms here is Eleiko.. maybe that’s why
Weider isn’t exactly equal to quality tho… they use collagen protein in their gainer lawl

Ive seen heaps of Eleiko plates crack in the gym that I work at. Its the only brand we use and the reason that they crack is because the ones we have arent flanged in the center and not finned across the radius. oh and by the way soft steel isnt soft by nature haha.

This thread is way of topic! May I be so bold as to suggest front loaders. Other wise there is a very simple way using a rack without getting one and thats to go to a gym. Even the cheapest gyms have squat racks. I dont know your position but joining a gym would be my suggestion.

Oh and before you dis my gym the reason we havnt got the weight plates that are of best quality is because we donate alot of money and time to special populations like M.S sufferers so dont dis homy

MEGA thanks for the pointer to Zercher squats.
These feel much safer to me (no rack/cage, plus my balance problems (watch my shaky lunge!!)) and seem to do a great job of beating up the target muscles!

You are a scholar and a gentleman. Your wisdom is greatly appreciated.

No need to curse at me. JK...I'm puttin' that in my damn sig! ;)
Your welcome, bro. You might try taking the bar and doing an overhead squat and finding out where your weakness is. Also, double check your stance width and foot position on regular squats if you're having trouble with coordination and whatnot. But the zerchers will really fry you.

Fun stuff: Hang or power clean the bar up and do front squats. Then when you get tired, drop the bar into the crook of the elbows and finish up with the zerchers for a few more reps or so. Supersetting bb hack squats and RDLs are fun. And alternating rep for rep deadlifts and hack squats can be an interesting workout.

Okay...I'm rambling now.
P.S. you might look at purchasing a couple saw horses to use as a makeshift safety bars.

LeiYunFat:

I never said I could or ever intended to squat 500. I know a personal trainer who believes a good quality Olympic bench could survive a 'dump from squat' of that or more. If (hahahahah! I ever get into the 500 lb squat range, I will long ago have obtained cage/rack). 500 lb squat is some serious territory, way beyond my aspirations.

evo,

I have another sorry constraint: Ceiling in workout area
is very low. My presses, french curls, etc. have to be done
seated.

I like the idea of hack squats, but need more flexibility (am working on that) before I can do them. Too many years of running and cycling with inadequate stretching have left me with wretched lower body flexibility. I did hack squats when I was younger and found them very effective. Getting old is not for sissies!!
