Spot Reducing by Hula Hooping?

Hi everyone,

I've read a million times YOU CAN'T SPOT REDUCE! I'm reading a claim that hula hooping with a weighted hoop can make you lose inches off your waist.

Can this be true, or can I get the same results by doing what I'm already doing? (cardio, diet and weights).

The hoop that I'm looking at buying isn't that expensive (about 35 dollars), but I don't want to waste my money either.

What I'm asking is...will it make me lose more inches of my waist than regular diet and exercise??

I've never heard that and I actually have no idea...hopefully someone else can answer your question. I can't hula hoop to save my life, regardless if it's a regular hoop or a weighted one, lol. :)

I'd like to see the author of whatever you read explain to me how hula hooping affects our physiology to the degree he/she mentions.

I think Hula Hooping can help help work your abs. I know mine get sore from Super Hula in Wii Fit for 20 minutes. It's also a really good calorie burner but I doubt it will spot reduce unfortunately.

This is what I read, I could have misinturpreted it though...

Lose Inches From Waist - How to Lose Inches Fast!
By Jennifer Jolan

1. Start with hula hooping

Hula hooping is an interesting exercise. Most people remember it from their childhoods, but what you may not realize is that it's becoming a critical exercise in weight loss classes around the world.

You won't need to waste your time in a class.

All I want you to do is spend $10 on a high quality, WEIGHTED hula hoop. Why weighted? Simply because it's easier to whirl and twirl around your waist. You'd think the extra weight would make it easier to fall to the ground, but it doesn't.

Once you get the hula hoop, use it for 30-60 seconds at a time for a total of 10-15 minutes a day. Do it during TV commercials or whenever you have a minute of free time at home. Its the perfect exercise for toning the waist and hips.

2. The best waist exercise is the isometric vacuum pose

This is a fancy name for sucking in your lower belly... the part where your belly button is.

You want to repeatedly do this, sucking it in and holding it for 15+ seconds. Do this for a minimum of 5 minutes a day if you want to lose 2 inches in 3-4 weeks. If you want to lose 3 or more inches, you'll need to do this for a total of 15-20 minutes a day.

Again, during TV commercials or whenever you get a free minute or 2 at home are perfect times to do these.

If you want to lose inches (waist inches specifically), this combo is nothing short of powerful since the results come very fast in minimum time.

I've got no problem with hula hooping. But the whole toning thing is a bunch of bull.

So it's pretty good exercise, but won't get me anything I won't get from a cardio workout + weights, I'm assuming.

It still looks like it could be fun and I might try it.

Does anyone know if bringing something like that to a gym would be welcome? I don't think I have enough room in my 600 square foot townhouse and would rather not go outside...

I doubt you'll burn as many calories as moderate/high intensity cardio since you're not required to move your weight much, but you'll burn calories... sure.

And no, it won't compare to weight training at all.

I don't see why a gym would mind you bringing that in... unless they have some sort of policy with regards to it for liability purposes. I know my gym does not.

Anytime :)
