Soreness

I went for my first work out two days ago - well, my first in several years that is.

Today (again, two days later), my triceps and chest are killing me. I am ok as long as I don't move them, but things like getting out of a chair and stretching them hurt like hell.

Is this normal seeing as how I haven't worked those muscles in a long time? How long will the soreness last? Should I continue to work those areas even though they are that sore?

I know, "No pain - No Gain" - but should I hurt this bad? I am assuming that if it is hurting, that the work out was effective. Am I right?

It will at first, but it gets better over time. The more you work out, the less you will get sore. Don't work again until the soreness goes away though, make sure you have recovered fully.

yup, and i advise some extra protein before bed (a glass of milk maybe) just to keep your muscles healing while sleeping.. and allen is right, stay away from the weights (@ least for those areas) until you feel 100% better! and

that extra soreness is just one more reason not to stop lifting! lol

OK - I will go work out tonight, but I will be working the lower body this time. I shouldn't have to use my arms/shoulders for anything other than keeping stationary on one of the leg machines - if that makes sense.

Thanks for such quick responses.

It's very normal; I was out on break for 4 week, then came back to the gym, and let me tell you - the next morning I felt really bad... But hell a hot shower, some streching, and that's about it. You can try some 'tiger balm' or 'icy hot' they may help out with the pain.

omg I remember the first time I lifted heavy - lower body day - and I was limping for 3 days, my bum and legs were so sore!

It's totally normal... don't fret.

lol

Yea, soreness is a good indicator you tore your muscles to shreds while working out, which is great. Like everyone has already said, it's always the worst when you start ... eventually it won't be as intense, and you'll get used to the feeling (and love it).
If there are times you're not sore after workouts, dont be discouraged ... as there really isn't a difference. Sometimes your sore, sometimes you're not.

Well, my upper body work out was tuesday of last week - which is when I got sore. I worked out my lower body on Thursday and was quite surprised at how strong" I still was in those areas. I was a bit sore from the lower body but not bad.

The soreness in my upper body finally subsided around friday afternoon. We have a whirlpool tub at home and that helped alot. I still have a faint pain in my triceps when stretching to reach my back - when you have an itch, you gotta scratch it.

I rode my dirtbike this weekend with positive results. No pain in the previous areas mentioned. Unfortunatley, my wrists tire and get sore pretty quickly - any advice on that?

I also worked in the yard a good bit this weekend - this was my workout for the weekend - gotta love the Georgia climate.

Tonight will be cardio and some more yard work.

Tomorrow, I will be back at the gym working on my upper body.

I think I know why my chest was so sore. I started feeling it when I was using the butterfly machine. The arms of the machine were too far back and I could literally feel my chest muscles stretching beyond their reach as I was starting each rep..Maybe i ought to see if O can move the seat back or move the arms forward some.
